Ilimane Diop, a 7-0 "17 years old" player is the sensation in spain right now, he average 14.3 pts, 8.5 rbs and 2.6 blocks, having games like 29 pts-19 rbs and 4 blocks vs croacia and 26-11-3 vs china, they say he has only been playing since he was 15 years old, he have wpn 30 pounds and grow 2 inches in the last 2 years, shooting 68% from the ft line… does anybody know him? http://www.marca.com/2012/07/10/baloncesto/nba/noticias/1341913767.html  theres the link, is in spanish but you can use google to translate, if anyone know something about him please let us know… Spain could have biyombo-Ibaka-Marc G.-Mirotic-Rubio next olimpyc? or they can only have 1 natualized player only? (sorry 4 the english)

I’ve seen him play in this competition. First pick potential in my opinion. The most impressive is his wingspan which is around 7’8. He’s got great mobility and coordination, developping some moves, already has a good mid-range shot. Too raw to be really dominant but he improved a lot in two years, huge upside offensively and defensively if he continues to work.

His body developped quickly since he arrived in Europe

Here is a pic from last year :

    http://www.fibaeurope.com/photogallery.asp?p=0&cid={211E071A-DC2A-4C85-B766-459C63BC2657}&playerID=93131&teamID=362&season=2011&roundID=8168&compID={89EB60F8-7F8F-4FFB-9427-6103055F3511}&limit=300&coid={231CD2C3-6D26-4071-A2E3-FC0BD75D594E}

    And this year :

    http://kaunas2012.fiba.com/images/web/Events/12/U17WCM/daybyday/0704/CRO-ESP/ESP/_400/15_ESP_3316.jpg

I think he could develop into a beast but I hope he will not declare to early for the draft (he’s eligible in 2014), because I think he needs to play a lot at high level and get tougher before going to NBA.

im from EUrupe and i haven’t heard of him still..but im IMPRESSED..

man Ant Davis looks short while watching this kid..and when you have super long naturally african player you don’t have to worry about his defense but kid puts uop huge number overall with only 2yrs of experience..could be something huge, we will see

I think what you said at the end was right, they can only have one naturalized player (without roots to the actually country or having been born there). I am fairly sure that they had to make a choice as to whether they could have Serge Ibaka or Nikola Mirotic and went with the front court presence (and NBA experience). Ilimane Diop is actually from Senegal and was indeed the only non-Spanish born player on the U17 team.

FIBA has made a rule limiting teams from the ability to "stack the decks" with players born outside of their country who gain fairly immediate citizenship mainly for basketball purposes. Russia used JR Holden when they needed a PG, worked very well as he was crucial to them winning a European Championship. Macedonia has been led by Bo McCalebb, who helped them get to the Olympic Qualifying tournament (over nations such as Turkey, Germany, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, for instance).

I kind of think these teams adding naturalized players is cool, definitely helps to make countries more competitive in many instances. Still, it makes sense to have a limit so as to keep the guidelines of it being a countries actual "national" team. Some may argue that Nigeria has 9 American born players, yet all of them have roots in Nigeria from their family. Fairly sure that Ibaka, Mirotic, Bismack Biyombo and Ilimane Diop only have basketball roots in Spain.

As far as Diop goes, he definitely seems to be an intriguing prospect. He has played well in his past couple tournaments against his age group and is a supposed load in the post. His length is insane (Eurohopes reported he had a 7’9 wingspan the first time I heard about him, though on his current profile they it is "must be close to 7’4".) and he appears to be a pretty good athlete for his size. Seems like he is definitely a player to watch, his draft eligibility begins in 2014.

Seems like a great candidate for the 2014 Hoop Summit, has helped countless players stock take off in a draft year. Will more than likely have some good American big guys to go up against (Jahlil Okafor/Dakari Johnson, both of whom have international experience), if he holds his own, should be huge. Until than, he is a good name to know and see how he furthers his development. Would also not at all be surprised to see him on Spain’s U19 World Championship team next summer, see how he does against some older competition.

Here you can watch some games of the U17 world championship, including two games of Spain. Not the best ones for Diop but you can see how he plays…

You can also watch another major prospect : Mario Hezonja (Croatia), best swingman prospect in the world to me

    Enjoy !

If ibaka keeps his game level is gonna be a shame we dont get to see biyombo, mirotic and maybe diop in a world champion or olimpycs, I follow alot of people from spain in twitter (alot of real madrid fans) and they say they rather have mirotic instead of ibaka if Pau plays international ball for another couple of years, 2 me thats crazy, specially if howard&bynum dont make the USA team, but they see mirotic as a SF, and they think rubio-navarro-mirotic-marc gasol- pau is the best staring 5, thinking vazquez(magic pick who is not now in the national team, I think 4 a pesonal desicion)&felipe reyes could hold on usa bigs, if they change the naturalized players rules and USA goes under 23 next olympic USA could be in really danger 2 lose the gold medal?? that would mean that only players born from 1993and younger could be allow to make the team..

    Davis-1993                           Noel 1994

    Drummond- 1993                 J. Randle   1994

    Kidd- 1993                          Jabari Parker1995          McAdoo 1993

    Beal – 1993                          Shabazz 1993

    Wroten/Teague -1993

is this team enough good and would it be enough experiencie to beat a Marc G.-Ibaka-Rudy-Navarro(?)-Rubio

He is a young giant, but under whatever tournaments are terrible indicators of future success for big men. Terrible, awful, throw draft picks away events. Guys like Dejan Musli, Paulo Prestes, AJ Ogilvy, Kelly Olynyk, Solomon Alabi, Alexis Ajinca, and Jorge Bryan Diaz all made names of themselves at the U-tournaments. It doesn’t mean he is going to be bad, it just means that simply because he played well at the tournament it doesn’t mean he is remotely close to being ready to compete at a hige level professionally. He might get drafted off it, but success is a different matter.

Diop played in a low, mostly junior level EBA last year and was exactly like every other young giant kid who is big where he has to play basketball and block shots but has not had his coordination and understanding of the game catch up with his height. He needs to put on a lot of weight and spend a lot of time in the gym before even going to a second division team in Spain. There are a lot of these guys in the EBA. Lucas Nogueira (born in 1992) was playing there, and hasn’t really been able to successfully move up to the ACB. Massine Fall (1993) was given a game or so with Fuenlabrada, but wasn’t ready. Cheikh Moussa Diagne (I think 1994) was rebounding like crazy and blocking shots. It is a low level of basketball, and that is okay. He is a kid playing at a kid’s level, but NBA teams should be smarter than to ignore the massive leap from junior level tournaments and leagues and NBA.

Ilimane Diop is a surefire lotto pick whenever he decides to declare. Incredible combination of length, touch and fundamentals. Even though he’s skinny, he establishes and holds position well.
