Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantHmm.. I’d still say LeBron
LeBron, 31ppg, 7rpg, 6apg, 1.6spg
Durant, 30ppg, 7rpg, 2.8apg
LeBron’s passing ability makes him better.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantLeBron was better then and now. LeBron was putting up like 31-7-6 on a below average Cleveland team. Mind you, before this season LeBron never played with a #2.Also, LeBron hit several game winning baskets and shown he’s solid late. Durant hasn’t yet. He’s hit a couple game winners but is not "clutch" at the level LeBron was.

RickyRubio9ParticipantI would’ve said LeBron then and now. At 21 Years Old he looked to have so much potential, not that KD doesn’t, but LeBron to me just seemed like he could’ve learned and mastered so much more… His offensive game outside the paint is still streaky and questionable. J

RUDEBOY_ParticipantSurprisingly they have very similar stats at age 21 ..Lebron averaged 31 points-7 boards-6 assists-shot 48% from the field and 34% from 3 point range..Lebron’s Cavs lost to the heavy favorite Pistons in the Conference Finals..
Durant averaged 30 points-7 boards-2 steals-46.7% from the field and 36% from 3 arc..Durant’s OKC team lost to the mighty Lakers in the 1st round….
People may Dislike Lebron all they want, but he came into the league more hyped than any player in history and showed alot of maturity until his overhyped decision this past summer…
Everyone has jumped on Durant’s bandwagon..Just like they jumped on Tracy McGrady’s bandwagon a few years ago..Some folks were even saying T-Mac was better than Kobe..
But people who have followed and really understand the game of basketball knows Lebron is the more dominate player..
When both their careers are done Lebron will be considered 1 of the top 10 players of alltime..While Durant will be mentioned as 1 of the top 25 players of alltime…

mikeyvthedonParticipantHonestly, I think the fact that Durant scored more than LeBron did last year is the only reason people even have this conversation. LeBron had really 0 ability to rebuild in Cleveland, his team immediately went from being one of the leagues worst to a team that had the 10th pick in the following years draft (compared to OKC’s 4th and 3rd pick during Durant’s first couple years). Durant is a better shooter than LeBron, but LeBron does so many other things better than he does, and their court vision is not even comparable. Durant is difficult to guard due to his ridiculous length, but LeBron is so much more athletic and so much stronger than he is, and while his speed/athleticism might not last forever, his strength will. I think that people honestly want there to be a player coming up who will be better than LeBron, but I for the life of me do not see it. I do not see Kevin Durant averaging 35 points per game and sweeping up a huge line of MVP’s. LeBron has yet to lose a first round play-off series, he led his team to the finals in his 4th season. Yes, they play in different scenario’s and in different conferences, but LeBron can kill you in so many more different aspects than Durant (passing, scoring, defense, not as far as offensive skill set, whereas LeBron still shoots a higher percentage from the field due to the fact he is the best finisher at the basket in the NBA). These are all things you do not even say in hindsight, because he was doing it when he was 21 and is improving now. People may not like LeBron, you can even say you maybe think Kevin Durant will be the better player down the road (I do not agree, but I could see how it might be predicted), but at 21, LeBron James was a better player than Kevin Durant. There seasons at that age (both of there 3rd years in the league) were maybe somewhat similar, but look at the play-off numbers. Durant shot 35% in that Lakers series, averaged 25 per game and 7.7 boards, and that was definitely still considered not a complete breakdown, but obviously was well below his averages. LeBron averaged 30.8, 8 boards and 5.8 assists, on 47% shooting through 13 play-off games (even taking a much better Detroit game into a 7th game). What exactly makes Durant better at the same age? You can argue that he could progress more than LeBron has, that is your perogative, but what makes Durant better at the same age? LeBron also did really well in the World Championships, where the competition was a lot more fierce than this past summer, so, got ya there 🙂

Im Your FatherParticipantActually come to think about it, I’d like to elaborate on one of his points. Part of Lebron’s problem in Cleveland was that he is capable of making a team a contender by himself. They had one lottery pick after his rookie year, and used it on Luke Jackson, passing up Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, Jr. Smith, etc. Cleveland probably would have been better off if he hadn’t improved them so much so early, and they had gotten a few more years to really build through the draft.
All the hate Lebron is getting is making a lot of people forget what a special, unique talent he is.

WizardofOzParticipantI think a lot guys are letting your hatred of LeBron get to you. I don’t like LeBron, but I am still not biased. LeBron was te better player at the age of 21. These are there stats in their 3rd seasons.
LeBron – 31.4 ppg, 7 rpg, 6.6 apg, 1.6 spg, 0.7 bpg
Durant – 30.1 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.4 spg, 1 bpg
LeBron was the better all-around player, wich makes him better in my books.

Without Durant just leading the USA to gold and seaming more humble and likeable, while Lebron made a bad "decision" and can’t stop acting like a dick lately we wouldn’t even have this post.

boxn1ParticipantThis is a unfair compairison to me because Lebron has played more and no matter what folks say that affects their opinion. I will try my best to be objective on the question myself though.
LBJ at 21
pros- physically superior, better handle, better passer, good scorer
cons- poor shooting(3pt, and free throw),lazy on ball defense, high turnover-assit ratio, at times played smaller than his size
KD at 21
pros- Great scorer, unlimited range, good athelet, good on ball defender, plays within team
cons- Has questionable shot selection at times, doesn’t create for others as much as he could, underacheiving on ball defender, too many turnovers to not be a primary ball handler
For his physical ability alone who wouldnt take Lebron, how the game is structured for offensive players. Now,does KD at 21 have skills that could make him just as valuable, yes. But if im coaching LBJ is my pick.

Actually Bird was no more of a pure scorer than Lebron. Yes they both could score at will but Bird also consistantly averaged more than six and a half assists per game in his prime. Bird actually put up numbers very similiar to LBJ during his career; 28.1 PPG, 7.6 APG and 9.2 RPG in 1987, 28.7 PPG, 6.6 APG and 10.5 RPG in 1985 and 24.3 PPG, 7.5 APG 9.5 RPG in 1990 when he was 33 years old!

And of course I didn’t mention Magic, Isaih, Tim Duncan etc. cuz they weren’t examples of what I was talking about. There is more than one way to win a championship, but having a pure scoring superstar on a solid team is clearly the way to go these days. Unless if you have 3 superstars, which is the exception.

boxn1ParticipantPure scorer means that the player scores with less effort than most. They are good at shooting, driving, spot up shooting, posting up, and getting to the free throw line. Lebron is better at doing most of those things than KD, but KD is more efficent at doing those things. To me that makes him a better scorer. And i wish everyone would stop saying Lebron is a good defender, he is not, he has not been a good defender. He plays lazy on ball defense, takes many unecessary risks, and because he got a few blocks running guys down he became a all league defender??? The all NBA defense list has turned into the equivilant of the golden glove for baseball. But im gonna save this opinion for another discussion

Im Your FatherParticipantLebron has become a much better defender, he is much more focused than he used to be. He has been playing very good D from what I’ve seen this year, and he locked down Pierce in the playoffs.
Also, explain how Durant is more efficient at doing those things when he shoots a worse percentage from the floor. Just because he looks prettier scoring doesn’t make him more efficient.

boxn1ParticipantHe is more effiecent because without having the ball in his hands every play he can and will have the opportunity to score. Off cuts, coming off picks to shoot. I personally would take his effiency, its tough to win with the ball in one guys hands most of the time. How does a team get involved when everything is based on one player dominating the ball. And, I have yet to see LBJ in a structured offense, so that is taking into consideration as well. No, he isnt a good defender, doing it a few times when you play the lakers, OKC, or boston doesn’t make you a good defender. It takes a great mental effort to be dominate on D. Can he be, yes. But he isn’t. He hasn’t be consistant. The fact that you are naming instances that he did play defense proves my point.

Im Your FatherParticipantThat’s crap. No star offensive player in this day and age puts forth their maximum effort on D all the time. Kobe doesn’t do it, Lebron doesn’t do it. Their teams rely on them too much on offense for them to expend all their energy on D.

boxn1ParticipantSo you awknoledge my point that i made then. It wasnt just about LBJ, all nba defense is a joke, just like the gold glove award.

Im Your FatherParticipantWell no I don’t, I think you have unfair standards. It’s not like everyone is capable of playing balls to the wall defense for 82 straight games plus playoffs. That’s just unrealistic for any star player.
By current NBA standards, Lebron is a very good defender.

NYK2010ParticipantDurant is a better 3 pt shooter and free throw shooter than Lebron. Also Durant is a lil better at getting to the free throw line. If Lebron shot free throws at 88% he’d have the scoring title last year. I wonder what Lebron would be like if he played off the ball and let a pure passing PG set him up.
