llperezjust to throw another name out there even though he didnt suck, but glenn robinson didnt come close to living up to expectations. He played 2 years at purdue. His freshman year he averaged 24 and 9 boards. His sophmore year he averaged 30 and 10. Guys like jason kidd and grant hill werent even in the discussion for the #1 overall pick. It was the glenn robinson draft. He was the first player to ever ask for 100 mill and that was before he signed his first deal with the bucks after being drafted. He was a huge part in the nba adopting a rookie pay scale becasue he was demanding to be the highest paid ever before playing a game and many felt he deserved it. He was considered a lock to come in and compete for mvp awards.
It turned out he was a solid nba player who was good for 20+ a game but not much else. certainly no where near what kidd and ghill did in their primes. The positive is that he played 11 seasons and never once averaged single digit scoring. He was a career 21ppg scorer. He defenitely knew how to get buckets.

King CaluchaParticipantNot all No.1 picks have to be stars. Not all draft classes have enough depth.
I believe Brand and Bogut were serviceable starters. Someone else could have been picked, but it’s not like they were out of the league after few seasons.

BajeebzParticipantJoe Smith went number one in 1995. He was nothing more than a great role player.

ExumInfernoParticipantThat is very correct, add Smith to that list. Maybe take Bogut off the list, also Kenyon Martin wasn’t great but he was a lot better than nearly all the others picked in his draft.
Going back more, Pervis Ellison would get a mention.
Derrick Coleman would be a player that many would debate about, maybe he had stats that were high some seasons but he wasn’t too popular with his teams and they didn’t really win with him.
Bennett gets another chance, although so far he belongs on that list, and maybe fans can just consider his new team as a new start.

TRC1991ParticipantElton Brand was not a bust…He just played on a lot of lousy teams
2x all star
16 nba seasons
16.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.8 bpg, 50% shooting
6 seasons averaging 20+ ppg
Amazingly he played in just 37 playoff games

ChewyParticipantBrand started in a Bulls organization with Krause who was in a hurry to get rid of the Jordan/Pippen/Rodman teams so that he could prove he could make a winning team without Jordan (while simultaniously proving that he CAN’T make a winning team without Jordan). He and Steve Francis had great rookie years.
Then he gets traded to a young Clippers team with Darius Miles and Q Richardson. These three should have grown into a great team (maybe not championship good, but playoffs consistantly). All 3 were young still when they came together. Then Q Richardson realized he still gets paid reguardless whether he slashes or shoots 3’s and relegates his game to spot up shooting. Darius never got a jumpshot, started getting injured and relegated into a street light.
TaylorCondrin is right, he put his best years into bad teams.

APfromMSPParticipantDidn’t these teams also have Maggette, Olowokandi, and Andre Miller on them? These teams should have made the playoffs but for some reason didn’t. Overall, though, Brand has had a good career and I certainly wouldn;t call him a bust as OP did.

IhateusernamesParticipantNot to mention Brand was the best undersized shot blocker of his era along w Ben Wallace. Absolute stud before his knee injury.

ph90702It’s too early to write Anthony Bennett off. He’s in a lot better shape than last year. He has a year of experience under his belt.

Jco4ParticipantA full pre-season can change a lot of things for an athlete, don’t write Bennett off too soon.

Toronto16ParticipantCheck Bennetts number at the 2nd half of the season last year, and also google the fact that he has only played one season and tell me again why he hasn’t panned out.

GrandmamaParticipantWhat an awful post….Brand? Kenyon? Bogut? Oden? Brand was 20/10 out of the gate, and was a great player for many years. Kenyon Martin was never a star, but he’s had some good years. Bogut was starting to become a really solid player before ankle injuries put his career on hold. And Oden would have been a star if not for injuries. So it’s not a matter of panning out for Oden, the f*cking guy got hurt. This is some kobyz type sh*t, wait, is that you kobyz?

ph90702Chauncey Billups would be on this list if it was 1998 by your logic. It took him about five years to get going.

HitsterParticipantElton Brand is still in the league after 15 years and his productivity was only really effected due to serious injuries which limited him to just 35 games over 2007-2009 seasons. I’ll throw in the point as well that he may well have made a fair few more than 2 all star appearances if it had not been that Tim Duncan, KG and Dirk Nowitzki were all around at that time. I agree with the astute comment about his blocking ability too – 3 times in top 5 for most blocked shots in a season.
K-Mart has had his career hugely blighted by injuries, being the first player to return from double microfracture surgery which probably robbed him of his possible peak years. I recall him being a total beast during his time with the Nets and being very impressive when he helped Jason Kidd take them to successive NBA finals and making his lone All Star appearance. Post surgery he became more of a defensive specialist in his later years with Denver and subsequent teams.
