Book of basketball

I bought it a year ago and read up through the “Pyramid” section. Put it down for a long time and just picked it back up this weekend and am currently at the part where he tries to build the greatest team of all-time. It’s a good and interesting read. I don’t agree with all of his opinions/rankings, but I’ve always liked reading his stuff (though he’s not nearly as good on TV as he is in his writing/podcasts).

I love his humor, obsession and ability to draw obscure parallels and comparisons into arguments. However he has a tendency to carry grudges and some extreme homerism which is funny most of the time but reading the entire book it got old after a while especially with some of his rankings for the pyramid.

I read the Book of Basketball, after completing it I admired Simmons ability to write an entire book based on his own personal opinion and biases.It was nice to see but I mean, I had some differences of rankings at the time. It led me to imagine him being a good basketball personality but after seeing him on ESPN he has got to be one of the worst on-screen analysts of all time. He is so cut and dry on air his humour cant be conveyed.

And i’m sure Bill is a good guy, but I don’t enjoy or appreciate Bill’s presence on ESPN as an analyst at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respect that, but what makes me what to hear his thoughts on the game?

I feel like he unnecessarily represents the casual fan being amongst Magic and Jalen. Wilbon like EJ from TNT does a great job in leading topics….he came before Bill, so does ESPN really need two columnists mouthing off to America? I’d much rather have Jon Barry permanently replace him.

I enjoy reading a lot of his stuff. But I can’t possibly bring myself to read his opinion on all things basketball since he such an openly admitted and unembarrassed laker/Kobe hater. He bashes them as if he was just another fan given a podium to speak on instead of someone with a job of educating others on basketball professionally.

I think whether you like Bill Simmons or not, his book is a must read for any true fan of the sport. its an amazing anthology of the game and he does a great job putting things in perspective. I had a whole new appreciation for a lot of players after reading it. I think he jokes about being a Laker hater, but he always give Kobe his respect. He lists him pretty darn high in the all time list, and always talks about him like one of the greats. He seems to dislike Kobe the Person, not Kobe the Player, who he has touted as an all time great in many columns and in the book itself.

And I’d rather hear what Simmons has to say on ESPN than 95% of the ex players and coaches they toss a mic in front of. Guys like Jon Barry, Steve Kerr and Jeff Van Gundy are great, but the majority of ESPN talking heads are horrible and say nothing interesting whatsoever.
