machu46ParticipantI bought it a year ago and read up through the “Pyramid” section. Put it down for a long time and just picked it back up this weekend and am currently at the part where he tries to build the greatest team of all-time. It’s a good and interesting read. I don’t agree with all of his opinions/rankings, but I’ve always liked reading his stuff (though he’s not nearly as good on TV as he is in his writing/podcasts).

Tune SquadParticipantI love his humor, obsession and ability to draw obscure parallels and comparisons into arguments. However he has a tendency to carry grudges and some extreme homerism which is funny most of the time but reading the entire book it got old after a while especially with some of his rankings for the pyramid.

kazamParticipantI read the Book of Basketball, after completing it I admired Simmons ability to write an entire book based on his own personal opinion and biases. It was nice to see but I mean, I had some differences of rankings at the time. It led me to imagine him being a good basketball personality but after seeing him on ESPN he has got to be one of the worst on-screen analysts of all time. He is so cut and dry on air his humour cant be conveyed.

db24kb24ParticipantAnd i’m sure Bill is a good guy, but I don’t enjoy or appreciate Bill’s presence on ESPN as an analyst at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respect that, but what makes me what to hear his thoughts on the game?
I feel like he unnecessarily represents the casual fan being amongst Magic and Jalen. Wilbon like EJ from TNT does a great job in leading topics….he came before Bill, so does ESPN really need two columnists mouthing off to America? I’d much rather have Jon Barry permanently replace him.

llperezI enjoy reading a lot of his stuff. But I can’t possibly bring myself to read his opinion on all things basketball since he such an openly admitted and unembarrassed laker/Kobe hater. He bashes them as if he was just another fan given a podium to speak on instead of someone with a job of educating others on basketball professionally.

fcb206ParticipantI think whether you like Bill Simmons or not, his book is a must read for any true fan of the sport. its an amazing anthology of the game and he does a great job putting things in perspective. I had a whole new appreciation for a lot of players after reading it. I think he jokes about being a Laker hater, but he always give Kobe his respect. He lists him pretty darn high in the all time list, and always talks about him like one of the greats. He seems to dislike Kobe the Person, not Kobe the Player, who he has touted as an all time great in many columns and in the book itself.
And I’d rather hear what Simmons has to say on ESPN than 95% of the ex players and coaches they toss a mic in front of. Guys like Jon Barry, Steve Kerr and Jeff Van Gundy are great, but the majority of ESPN talking heads are horrible and say nothing interesting whatsoever.

BigMac12111ParticipantOne of my all-time favorites and very informative. Also, while he doesn’t lie in his dislike for Lakers (and Wilt in particular) he really doesn’t take it out on his rankings all that much. I think everyone has their own rankings, but for the most part Bill did a great job of getting the right guys in the right tiers. Lastly, the Bill Walton portion of the book is a must read. Such a well-written book by a very funny, if somewhat immature, guy.
And for those who dislike him, I’d say to try to watch some of his Grantland videos with Jalen and Bird and others before completely writing him off. Not saying that will definitely change your mind, but I would prefer Grantland Simmons over TV Simmons any day of the week.

machu46ParticipantAbsolutely. And his podcasts are far better than his TV personality too.
The only thing that’s kind of annoying about Grantland now is that the entire site writes like a wannabe Bill Simmons now. It feels like a shtick for a lot of the writers there, whereas Simmons actually pulls it off IMO. Even if his opinion isn’t always something I agree with, I love listening to his podcasts before each season begins where they break down every team and break down whether or not they’ll hit their over/under win totals and stuff. It’s interesting stuff.
And his draft diary on Grantland was hysterical last year. This is one of the lines from the draft diary in regards to the Cavs picks…
“Meanwhile, we have our first trade: Dallas traded Zeller to Cleveland for picks 24, 32 and 33. That means the Cavs just parlayed four top-33 picks (including the no. 4 overall) into a sixth man and a backup center, winning this year’s Baxter Burgundy Award for the team that pooped in the fridge and ate a whole wheel of cheese, only you can’t be mad at them because it was kind of amazing.”

BigMac12111ParticipantHis draft diaries are great as are his podcasts. And the only two people on Grantland that I think pull off the sophomorish, immature-while-still-being-wise take are Bill Simmons and Mark Titus. For those who like the BofB, I would highly recommend Titus’ “Don’t put me in, Coach”. Great read and if you like Ohio State, you’ll love it even more.

LipstickParticipantI’ve read through it a few times. I normally love Simmons’ writing, but the pop-culture ties to the players got really old after a while. He probably could’ve cut 50 or so pages if he just got to the point with most of his pyramid rankings.
With that said, it’s a great read. He does go into great detail about a ton of aspects of the NBA, especially the 50s to 80s, ranks Magic and Kareem in front of Bird if I remember right, and I read the revised edition which came out at a unique time, just after The Decision by LeBron.
