NBATalk20098Participant“[Walker] liked to move in an outsized entourage; his mother estimates that, during his playing days, he was supporting 70 friends and family members in one way or another. And speaking of his mother, he built her a mansion in the Chicago suburbs, complete with an indoor pool, 10 bathrooms, and a full-size basketball court. […]
Living at the Bishops Forest condominium complex in Waltham during the Celtics season, Walker turned the pavement surrounding his home into a virtual luxury car lot — two Bentleys, two Mercedes, a Range Rover, a Cadillac Escalade, a bright red Hummer. Often, the vehicles were tricked out with custom paint jobs, rims, and sound systems at considerable added expense. He also collected top-line watches — Rolexes and diamond-encrusted Cartiers.
Condos, luxury cars, watches … I guess that’ll eventually force you into bankruptcy. Especially when you’re not investing any money or collecting $200 with every fifth or sixth roll of the die.
But Walker’s lavish lifestyle wasn’t all “me-me-me.” He was also a generous friend and teammate who had custom suits made for coaches, routinely picked up giant team dinner tabs and, when there were funds to spare, gave to underprivileged youngsters. He was basically spending money like it was going out of style.
And it did.
I guess Biggie was right after all: mo’ money, mo’ problems.

TyroberParticipanti hate walker. he was the most selfish player. get it and throw up a bad shot most of the time. hasnt the idiot gotten robbed twice at gun point too or soemthing like that?

kaceyParticipantYes he has been robbed at gun point. If you walk around in custom tailored suits with some bling, bling, bling on, then it will happen, especially in certain parts of Chicago.
Calling Antoine Walker an idiot is a little overboard. You can’t blame the man for trying to help his family, and extended family, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to take care of yourself. Obviously he had one too many cars, one too many watches, and why in the world would your mom’s mansion have 10 bathrooms and a full-size basketball court?
I hate coffee.

OrangeJuiceJonesParticipantI played Antoine Walker’s mom in a game of one-on-one at her mansion once. She’s pretty strong and has a decent mid-range game, but her defense is non-existent.

rtbtParticipantI recently read about a study of retired NBA players that claimed approximately 2/3 of them are now bankrupt. What does that tell you? Those guys aren’t very bright, they’re ill prepared for the world of finance, and they live in the moment. How can you throw away millions of dollars every year without putting aside significant sums of money to invest in your future?

OrangeJuiceJonesParticipantThat’s really just the American way of spend, spend, spend. For so long, it’s always been about “keeping up with the Joneses.” It’s cool to have an expensive car and a big house because you can show it off. You can’t show off a large sum of money in your savings account, because people don’t care about that. So many people spend their lives struggling and living paycheck to paycheck, despite making more money than they need, because they want to be accepted. So many of our lifestyles became nothing more than a popularity contest. I’m not really surprised that these guys are bankrupt. Just about all of them have never had that kind of money. They get paid way more money than they need, so they decide to spend the rest of it. BIG mistake.
