Ex-Temple star Christmas arrestedComment Email Print Share Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police say former Temple University basketball star Dionte Christmas, who was cut by the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, has been arrested on firearms charges.

Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore says Christmas was stopped by highway patrol officers at about 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday for erratic driving in North Philadelphia.

Vanore said Christmas was found to be driving without a license, and the vehicle had a 9mm semiautomatic pistol under the driver’s seat.

Vanore says Christmas was taken to the 35th Police District to be charged with felony firearms offenses.

The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 19.5 points per game in his senior season at Temple. His agent, Andre Buck, said he is trying to contact his client.

Sixers spokesman Mike Preston said the team will not comment.

its sad to see young talented players like this. get caught up in stupid things like that.

what i don’t get is how the police find these guns? I mean every time these dudes get pulled over, are the cops tearing the car apart looking for stuff? And if Dionte had it out in the open, then he’s a dumb.ass

here is the full story..it was speights vehicle and gun, but hes registered in PA for it, so its no biggie.

Christmas was driving without a license, and the officers found a Hi-Point 9mm semiautomatic handgun under the driver’s seat, Cochrane said. The weapon was loaded with seven rounds.

Christmas was taken to the 35th District’s headquarters, at Broad Street and Champlost Avenue in Ogontz, where he was expected to be charged with a felony weapons offense, police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore said.

Police later learned that the car Christmas had been driving belonged to Sixer forward/center Marreese Speights, Cochrane said. The 9mm apparently also was registered to Speights, he said.

Christmas had a passenger in the car who was not identified. Michael Preston, a 76ers spokesman, said the team had no comment. Christmas’ agent, Andre Buck, could not be reached for comment, nor could Speights’ agent, Andy Miller.

Yeah, that’s right, he’s clean. He’s driving around in a car that doesn’t belong to him, no licence and has a gun under the drivers seat. Stand up guy.
