Brandon Ingram – Duke (F, Fr., 6-9, 190, Kinston, NC)
Ingram gets the nod over North Carolina’s Brice Johnson for Player of the Week honors. The phenomenal freshman’s level of play has continued to skyrocket, leading some observers to believe that he can challenge LSU’s Ben Simmons as the No. 1 overall selection in this year’s draft.
Ingram scored a game-high 25 points on 10-for-22 shooting in Duke’s 63-62 victory over Virginia on Feb. 13. He led to Blue Devils to their fourth straight win and kept the Cavaliers winless at Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1995. Ingram, the likely number 2 selection in this year’s draft, single-handedly brought the Blue Devils back from an 11-point deficit. He finished one point shy of his season high and was the only Blue Devil to score during a 5 1/2-minute span that bridged the halves, reeling off 18 consecutive points for his team and putting Duke up 41-40 with a jumper with 16 1/2 minutes left. The freshman was also able to contribute seven rebounds and knocked down four of nine shots from beyond the arc.
Ingram recorded 20 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with four assists, two blocks, and one steal as Duke stunned North Carolina, 74-73, on Feb. 17. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well from the field (7-for-21) but had huge baskets down the stretch. Ingram, a prized recruit who passed on UNC, scored three straight baskets after the Tar Heels took their biggest lead at 68-60 with 6:49 left. He became the second Duke player after Jeff Mullins in February 1962 to record at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in his first career game against North Carolina.
Through both games, he averaged 22.5 points on 39 percent shooting, including 42 percent from the 3-point line, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 0.5 steal
Who’s Hot?
Brice Johnson – North Carolina (F, Sr., 6-9, 228, Orangeburg, SC)
Johnson was his usual dominant self in North Carolina’s two games this week. The senior recorded a game-high 19 points to go along with sevens rebounds and three assists in the Tar Heels 86-64 Valentines Day win. He was an efficient 9-for-12 shooting from the field. Johnson then scored 29 points on 13-for-17 shooting and collected 19 rebounds in the Tar Heels loss to Duke. It was surprising to see him get just two shot attempts in the game’s final 13 minutes as the Tar Heels sputtered down the stretch after leading by eight with about 7 minutes left.
Notre Dame’s Demetrius Jackson – (G, Jr., 6-1, 200, Mishawaka, IN) and Steve Vasturia – (G, Jr., 6-5, 211, Medford, NJ)
Notre Dame’s backcourt duo proved to be too much to handle for Louisville. Jackson’s 27 points and Vasturia’s 20 points led the Fighting Irish to a 71-66 victory over the Cardinals. Jackson’s point total matched his career high. He scored 20 of those points in the first half. Vasturia scored 15 of his 20 in the second as he repeatedly drove inside. Both players were attacking, going downhill, trying to create for themselves and for others. Jackson kept the Fighting Irish in the game in the first half, Vasturia led the rally back from an 11-point deficit in the second and other Notre Dame players hit some key shots down the stretch.
Who’s Not?
Eli Carter – Boston College (G, Sr., 6-2, 200, Paterson, NJ)
Carter has had a few down games in his last several outings. He was just 2-for-9 for seven points in Boston College’s 75-61 victory over Syracuse. He then shot a horrid 1-for-17 for five points in the team’s 65-54 loss to Clemson. Carter combined to shoot 1-for-12 from long distance in both games.
Florida State Seminoles – Four-game losing streak
FSU has lost four straight games. They suffered tough losses to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech this week to fall to 16-11 (6-9) on the season. The Seminoles fell to 14-3 when leading at halftime this season after its loss to Virginia Tech. Florida State’s bench came into the game averaging 24.6 points per game but contributed just 14 against the Hokies. The freshman duo of Dwayne Bacon and Malik Beasley struggled for the second straight game against Georgia Tech. They came in averaging a combined 32.4 points but were held to 19 with Bacon scoring 10.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons – 11-game losing streak
Wake Forest is in the midst of an 11-game losing streak. This week they fell to NC State, 99-88, and Pittsburgh, 101-96, in double overtime. The Demon Deacons shot 56 percent before halftime but just 41 percent afterward in its game against the Wolfpack. They haven’t won in Raleigh since an infamous game in 2005 when future NBA all-star Chris Paul popped Wolfpack star Julius Hodge in the groin after a rebound in the first half — missed by referees but later leading to a one-game suspension — then hit the winning shot at the buzzer on an ugly night in Raleigh.
