Marcus Williams will be starting a point guard over Mike Conley by the all-star break.

For some reason, Conley just doesn’t seem to have it. I’ve heard his confidence has been up and down over the past few years, but even still, to me he’s only a starter on a couple of NBA teams. He’ll make a solid backup. Marcus Williams is a better point guard. Actually, Williams played very well behind Jason Kidd for his two years in New Jersey. For some reason, he and Don Nelson continued to clash and so Nelson refused to play him. But after watching summer league (yes, summer league), I know Williams is the bigger, stronger mayber even faster and all-around better point guard.

    No offense to d-grizzly.

No he wont. He presents too big a liability defensively, an inability to get to he rim,let alone finish, and too poor a jump shooter. He’s a good passer, but that’s about it. Watch Conley break out this season.

DHamp we will have to disagree because there is no way Williams plays ahead of Conley considering how he played under this new coach. Also with AI there I think AI is starting with Mayo playing the Point. If that does not happen Conley will start.

Really? Mike Conley will never put up the numbers Devin Harris does no matter how many minutes a game he gets to play. Those two guys are two totally different levels

u said dhamp ” that u want to say Conley isnt in his class (im assuming u mean Marcus Williams), but then say he can improve to level of Devin Harris…. Its like your contradicting yourself in the same sentence, unless im misinterpreting what you are attempting to get across..

No way Williams starts over either of them.. He was a heady PG at UCONN, but is not athletic at all, like the other two guys being mentioned.. hes a great passer, and subpar shooter. In fact Williams has never even shot 40 % from FG range… So not sure where u get hes a good shooter from. Conley actually has better shooting #’s across the board. Conley has never been under 40 %, and was over 40 % from 3 last season…

here are his #’s at UCONN

    MARCUS WILLIAMS STATS Reb Pts
Statistics G FG% 3P% FT% Tot. Avg. Asst Bl St Tot. Avg.
    2005-2006 23 40.7 40.0 86.2 89 3.9 8.6 0.2 0.9 284 12.3
    2004-2005 31 40.4 40.3 71.9 117 3.8 7.8 0.3 1.1 297 9.6
    2003-2004 16 37.0 17.6 69.2 21 1.3 4.3 0.1 1.0 46 2.9
    Career 70 40.2 37.5 79.1 227 3.2 7.3 0.2 1.0 627 9.0

So please enlighten me.. Do you guys shoot hoops together in your drive way, or you just imagining, or day dreaming about him hitting jumpers.. Stats show hes a horrible shooter.

Jeff416, you make an excellent point. I haven’t yet gotten used to Iverson being in Memphis. That may very well be true.

Igoudola, I know Marcus Williams shooting percentage hasn’t shown it, but he can shoot and definately get to the rim. I really want to say Conely isn’t in his class, but I won’t go that far. I will sayWilliams can improve to the level of Devis Harris given the mins and backing from the coaching staff.

    i respect your view dhamp.

I am hoping for something else though, mike conely developing into what i expect him to do.

    13ppg, 7apg, 5rpg, 1.5spg.

I think if he developes fully and shows excitement and growth early, he’ll have the starter spot for sure. If all goes to plan, the only reason williams would start is because conely is injured. and then again, wouldn’t mayo slide to pg and iverson start at Sg if conely got injured?

D-Grizzly….5 rb for Conley….Really, lol!!! 7ast…Really!!! No way bro. But I have mad respect for you.

Listen, Williams is the classic late bloomer. He didn’t score much in college, but he was UCONN’S go-to-guy and took all of the clutch shots. He needs mins to shine. You guys will see. And someone said Conley is more athlectic than Williams, really…again. Now way. And Williams has good height at 6 foot 3 1/2.

I dont think Conley could be that far off from Harris actually. He has similar explosiveness and athleticism, 2 things that make Harris what he is today. Conley probably wont be that level of a scorer (even though its possible for him to get close) but he definitely has a chance to be a better playmaker in terms of setting up teammates. Harris is more intense and aggressive than Conley, 2 things Conley needs to improve to reach his potential. I think he will.

i agree about williams. if you give this guy sometime, he could surprise everybody in the league. i’m not comparing his skills to kevin martin, but he’s similar in the way of how kevin martin was held back by bonzi wells starting in sacramento their last playoff year. the next year, when bonzi took a deal from houston instead, kevin boomed into an amazing starter at SG due to increased minutes.

back to conely, i think you’re right about the rebounds per game estimate. the most he’s gotten in a season is 3.4. and i didn’t factor in the additions of thabeet, carrol, the rebounding work ethic rudy gay has been working on all summer, and arthur one year better…also gasol one year better. 5rpg for conely is definitly out of reach, but continuing his 3.5 rpg he should be able to do.

7 assists isn’t much of a reach for conely, i think many of the grizzlies will take smarter shots and conely is a year smarter in the league, if he can create some plays much better this year, i see 7apg sir.

RIght or wrong, WIlliams just isnt going to get minutes. ONe of these two scenarios will play out for the Grizzlies. Conley develops and emerges as there long term point guard, or Mayo moves to the one and AI plays the 2. THere was talk last year of moving Mayo to the point and if Conley dont work out they just might do it now

Williams with the right min, backing and confidence will be most improved player in the NBA. This kid can play. He has good size and handle. Wait and see. The best part is he has a chip on his shoulder. Heck, you could tell he had one in summer league!!! Who does that. I’ll tell you. Someone who’s hungry to blow the league up, lol!

Even if the experiment is for 1 year, and Mayo is a PG, if the Grizzlies had to choose who they were going to groom as their starting PG between Conley and Williams it would be Conley. Hands down point blank. Marcus Williams is a good passer in a half-court offense and he brings nothing else to the table. Conley is already a good shooter, which he wasnt until last year, and he provides everything Williams can do passing, and is even better at everything else.

There is no chance Williams starts over Conley this year. Conley made huge strides in the second half of the year last year, and is only getting better. Here are some of his stats over the final 38 games.

    14.5 ppg 5.6 apg 4.0 rpg 1.55 spg 45.8 fg% 59 3’s

Those are solid #’s from a PG who at best is the team’s third option. He is still improving and will win the starting job without a fight. You don’t draft someone fourth overall and completely give up on him for an unproven, less skilled PG in Williams.

I will tell you this AI is not coming off the bench. Also I dont see Williams overtaking Conley because Conley is a better fit of this team. Williams to me a Back up. Maybe i a few year he can be like Andre Millers or Chauncey Billups but Devin Harris no way. DHamp you are slipping folk. I am trying to figure out how you see what you see. Dude cant keep up with quick point enough to get that many minutes over a improving every year Conley. They will trade Conley is Williams take that many minutes.

That’s what Im trying to figure out Sheltwon! What has Marcus Williams even shown as an NBA player, ever, that would lead you to believe that he could play over a guy that has proven himself a lot more (even though the jury is still out on him)? Summer League? Conley did make a moderate improvement last year as well. He improved a bunch of his weak spots (shooting most noticeably though). I expect a big jump in production.

Whoever said Williams is more athletic than Conley needs to have his head examined. Williams might be the most un-athletic backcourt player in the league. I think Williams has more confidence in himself and is a good player, but all Conley needs is a coach to not yank the reigns when he fucks up. And neither of these guys will ever reach near the level Harris has. That’s just silly.

I said it in another topic…Marcus Williams is the most unathletic player in the NBA. Especially in the backcourt.

Conley does have the raw skills to get on Harris level and he is young so he has time but Devin is a monster on D so Conley will really have to step his game up.

i like marcus williams a lot, he’s a great passer but no way in hell he starts this year. If i were memphis, if conley isn’t playin that well to start off the season i say cut ur losses and trade him. I really dont think he is starting material. Move OJ to the point (anyone who says he can’t play the point doesnt know his game very well, as he has played point his entire life until the NBA), and start Iverson at the 2. Iverson is great when he plays next to a big point guard. with that lineup they could scare some people. Oh and let Marcus Williams back up OJ

C’mon, to me it seems obvious that Iverson would not stay with the Grizzlies the entire season. The Grizzlies will realize that on the court Iverson won’t be a positive difference maker, as his efforts neglect his teammates on the court with him. And I don’t even think he’ll start. They’ll let their young guns Conley and Mayo start at the guards, with A.I. being the obvious 6th man, who can take over the offense ripping it against 2nd string players. I then see him getting traded to a contender mid-season, and the Grizzlies will continue to go young.

Marcus Williams will average 15 Mpg. Even if Conley doesn’t show significant improvement this year, the fact that he was a former 4th overall pick leaves nearly no way he eventually starts over Conley, as the franchise would be admitting to the Memphis faithful they made a mistake on this pick. It would almost (keyword: Almost) be like Portland giving up on Oden and letting Pryzbilla continue to start. I think regardless, Conley will average a very solid 15 and 6 in 35 Mpg. I cannot see Williams staying on the team after this upcoming season. Not saying he’ll play poorly, just I think he’ll find a new home in the summer of ’10.

Just a trade idea I’m throwing out there…A.I. to the Grizzlies for J.J. Barea and rookie Rodrique Beaubois for that mid-season prediction trade. Even though Dallas would be giving up on young talent, I’m sure Mark Cuban wouldn’t mind rolling with Kidd, A.I., Howard, Marion, and Nowitzki in lineups every now and then. As I said earlier, Memphis would go young, and this PG depth would surely challenge Conley.
