Dan Steinberg of The Washington Post: “DeAngelo Hall has done a pretty fine job endearing himself to D.C. fans, making plays on the field, not making a ruckus off it, and repeatedly proclaiming his love of all things burgundy and gold. But just in case that wasn’t good enough, on Monday afternoon he embarked on an extended discussion of his basketball superiority to J.J. Redick. ‘I used to do J.J. Redick,’ Hall said when discussing his amateur hoops career. ‘I used to give him that work.’ Come again? ‘Kill him,’ Hall explained. See, basketball was Hall’s first love and the sport he took most seriously, so he competed in high-level AAU tournaments with and against guys like Jarrett Jack, Rashad McCants, John Gilchrist and, yes, Redick. He and Redick were teammates when they were about 15 or 16, but the season before that, Hall’s Chesapeake team had won a state AAU title over Redick’s squad. ‘He was like the best player in the state,’ Hall recalled. ‘He was so easy [to guard]. You just deny him the ball. You know what I’m saying, he wasn’t quicker than me, more athletic than me. I don’t know why guys didn’t just do that the whole season, just deny him the ball. We went box-and-one, that’s all we did, and I manned him up.’

    * For those who don’t know : Box and 1 is a defensive stragedy that there is constantly 1 guy chasing down the opposing teams most unguardable player whether he has the ball or not , picking him up full court, if he brings the ball up the court the player on D pressures him the whole time , if he doesn’t have the ball or bring the ball up the court the player on D is constantly denying him.

Redick’s coach must not have been that smart cuz when the opposing team plays box n 1 on ur best player your supposed to free him up with screens whether it be screens in the backcourt or baseline screens.

I’m guessing reddick would torch him now. This was about when they were teens.

I could see DeAngelo Hall being a lockdown defender, and could probably guard Redick. You have to remember were talking about a player with elite lateral quickness and track &field straight-line speed. He also is probably super strong since he’s an NFL player. I think he could defend Redick right now.

One on one I feel like I could guard Redick haha. Now if they start setting screens that is another story.  I definitely would think Hall could shut down Redick pretty easily.  I mean I don’t think he is that hard to guard.

I’m no Reddick fan, but he has shown a lot of improvement in his ball handling. We are talking about an NBA player here. I remember some NBA player from back in the day saying, make no doubt about it, if Steve Kerr came to your court, he would put 50 on you.

I dont have the athleticism DeAngelo Hall has, so I dont see how you can say Steve Kerr could put up 50 pts on ME. Its not about the posters on here, its about Hall and Redick.

Athleticism isn’t a good reason of saying an NFL player could guard one of the NBA’s best shooters and one of college’s all time great scorers, redick would drop 30 on him,his SKILLS are superior

Redick is more “skilled” than Thabo Sefolosha, but do you think Redick would be able to hold his own against him? I dont.

I brought skills into it because we are alking about an NFL player,Thabo is in the NBA,Thabo has defensive skill,I don’t think any NFL player can guard any NBA player

Redick is a well below average NBA player.  Plus he isn’t that quick.

There are quite a few NFL guys that could defend NBA players, esp. the one-dimensional guys like Redick. You have to remember most of the NFL’s skill position guys played basketball at at least the high school level during their teen years. And they are good athletes with strength.

For an NBA player Redick is below average….everybody knows that.  You just must be a fan. Yes, he can shoot.

Reddick is not above average, but he doesn’t suck either. I don’t think he will ever average double digits, but he will play 10 years and be a rotation player. I don’t think that qualifies as sucking.

Well the league average PER is 15.  Redicks’ PER from last season was 9.96.  That is one way to look at it.  Also he is purely a shooter, he really doesn’t contribute in any other ways.

If you watched the Magic’s postseason last year you would know how underrated he is as a playmaker and his IQ is very high

Mike…Reddick cannot play PG and he is not a good playmaker. He has a high IQ but without atlethism, he looks very bad and to me, he is not gonna be a good player down the line.

    He will be barely average

Mark Madsen and Brian Cardinal have high basketball IQ’S, but they are below average players. Actually, downright horrible players. And Redick’s playmaking is “rated” just fine. He doesnt suck, but he is a below average player. He’s strictly a shooter, and his percentages as a shooter arent even that good.

I mean, DeAngelo Hall is by FAR a superior athlete, but Reddick ( who i don’t particularly like ) spent 4 years being coached by Coach K, one of the best basketball coaches of all-time, and has been playing against the best in the world for 3 years. I think Hall could give him some trouble, but comon’ Hall was talking about 10 years ago, Reddick would draw contact and get him to foul out of a hypothetical game in no time.

I think now things would be different with Reddick but I also believe one on one Hall may give Reddick fits. Reddick game is not a one on one game like Kobe has. His dribbles are better now and so is his release so it would be a toss up. I think there is a big different between high school days and NBA. I have seen great improvements in Reddick game and once he starts playing at a slower speed mind wise he will be a Ray Allen type. There are probably several players that are shooting specialist that one on one that another athlete could guard but basketball is a team sport. His is starts understanding game pace a lil better he can play more spot minutes at the one. I actually think that given minute this year Reddick could hit double digits. I think people are forget that good basketball is not about one on one playing. Hall should know this because even in football you need your other teammate to play effective defense.

alright…. never put allen n redick in the same sentence unless its about shooting open 3s.

the difference between ray ray and J J? Ray CAN get to the hoop, but he’s a great shooter, so he does that more often. JJ just can’t get to the hoop

Reddick in most cases can not beat his man off the dribble like Ray Allen but you do realize I was talking about shooting but Reddick as I seen in the playoffs is quick enough to get to the basket against some player if they overplay him for the shot. The thing is I am not saying he will be a player that can be a number one option but with all the talent around him, He could put up numbers similiar to Ray Allen in Boston. He can also become one of the top 3 point specialist in the league. The only thing I noticed about his game on the negative front was he played to fast for his game. He seemed like he was always trying to over compensate and never really played that relaxed. Once he gets that I think people will see why he got drafted so high. Everyone knew he would not be a great one on one player but he can be a top notch shooter.

He is not hard to guard, but if Howard is setting picks then you have a different situation on your hands.

Reddick isn’t hard to guard at all, this is because he can’t create his own shot. He HAS to come off of a pick to score.

There are a lot of players in the league like this. That is why I am like are you serious. There are only a few players in the league that are efficient at creating their own shot. Some are capable to a degree but there are not a lot of guys you can give the ball too and be like make it happen.
