    Jermaine O’Neal working hard
    August 1, 2009

Talented veteran Miami Heat big-man Jermaine O’Neal has been more known for injury than anything else these past few years. But he’s been working hard to change that. Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports (via blog):

O’Neal, who has been a regular in the weight room and on the court at AmericanAirlines Arena the past two months, showing up about four times a week, is poised to take the next step, with eight weeks of work planned with noted Chicago trainer Tim Grover. Yes, the same Tim Grover who last summer so reinvigorated Dwyane Wade.

O’Neal has impressed those in the weight room with his physique and appearance.

After seeing how much Grover helped Wade last summer, is it possible JO could be an All-Star? I seriously doubt he’ll re-gain all of his athleticism or explosion back, but he should be much improved and give the Heat the inside presence that they’ve been lacking.

I agree with what you said..

    Much Improved? Yes
    All-Star? No

But without making any roster moves, the Heat wont get passed the 2nd round in the playoffs

there’s no doubt he can improve himself and probably will. his window for allstar is about shut and doesn’t look likely to happen again.

Yea he’s over the hill, but he should perform like he did in the playoffs is about what I would expect him to do at his best.

This is a contract year for him. He has to prove he can still play so he can get a big contract likely from another team next season.

Jermaine O’Neal deserves a mid deal at the absolute most, if he gets a big deal, the bloggers and the media will be all over him, saying alot of the same things were saying about Elton Brand and Corey Maggette right now.

hmmmmm allstar form…who are his comp?..bogut,shaq,lopez,dhoward,bosh?…howard is a lock and i think shaq will put up better numbers then last year because of lebron so i doubt if he will make the all star team but he could play like a allstar if healthy

Remember how banged up Wade was during the 2007-2008 season? He had severe tendonitus in his knees and was experiencing pain from a severely dislocated shoulder. I remember hearing that he had to get electro therapy treatment on his knees just to play some games. He eventually ended up shutting it down for the rest of the season because the pain was too great. Last season Wade was 100% healthy and looked like a completely different player.

IF Grover can do anything close for JO like he did for Wade, I think JO could average 15-19 points, 9 rebounds and 2-3 blocks. That would give him a chance to be selected as a All-Star reserve IMO. JO will be extremely motivated this season. Like Gatorheels said… He’s also in a contract year.

JO’s body is broken down in ways the weight room won’t help him. He has been training hard to overcome injuries for the last 4-5 seasons and nothing has helped. Short of a Grant Hill move to Phoenix odds defying amazing recovery… I think O’neal will miss at least 20 games and be an average center at best. Nothing against the guy, just sadly some peoples body’s weren’t built to take the pounding of a NBA season no matter how hard they try.

I can promise you he wont get to the all-star game. He isnt a good rebounder or defender anymore because he isnt explosive anymore, he’s past his heyday. He will be a post scorer because of his talent, but he isnt the athlete he used to be, and he hasnt been for a while now which will limit him.

Kong47272… You’re most likely right, but I think y’all are counting him out too soon. Here’s why…

Last season, he played 68 games and averaged 13.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2 blocks. He also shot 47% FG and 79% FT. He was only about 70-75% healthy last season. It’s doubtful JO will ever be 100% again, but he’ll be tremendously improved from last season after working with Grover and actually being healthy enough this summer to push his body to the limit. He’ll put up even better numbers next season. He’ll be healthier and motivated because of being in a contract year. I disagree with Iguodala9 about him not being a good defender anymore. As you see, he averaged two blocks last season. Being a good defender isn’t just about explosiveness, etc… Awareness and timing are also big parts of it and JO has those. His lower body will be much stronger next season, which will also help him defensively.

JO is only 30 years old. Yes, he’s been in the NBA for 13 years, but he was buried on the bench in Portland for the first four years of his career. I think JO has a couple of good years left! I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in consideration for an All-Star reserve spot next season.

yeah ya’ll are talking like hes 40..the guy is only 30 and the injuries he had arent the worst injuries you can get and they were not as bad as grant hills…on top of that his game was never to be extremley explosive he had a bunch of nice post moves. Im not saying hes gonna be a allstar but he should easily be better then a average center

You wouldnt say Jermaine O’Neal is slowing down? I said how he performed in the playoffs is how he will play, which was decent, but he looks slow on D and functions mostly as a 15-18 ft spot up shooter. That’s what I’ve seen. Yes, he’s 30, but he’s been in the NBA for 13 years. That counts for something, and its obvious were not talking about the same Jermaine O’Neal. Its like you guys think he’s just filled with untapped potential, when he’s not getting any younger.

i think he can do what Wallace will do to boston not be an All-Star but bringing leadership and experiance and helpinh his team, and still putting up decent numbers.

No way he will be an all star. At the very least he is competing against Howard and Shaq. O’Neil is done, but who knows it’s a contract year and crazier things have happened.

yes we have all seen him but have you seen the other centers that are out there?..17pts and 8rebs would be very very good which he can do. yes hes played 13 but what exactly does that mean..it funny alot of sportscasters say that too yet these same players who played that long still seem to perform at a pretty good level untill they get around 35. also if you use that logic you also have to include the fact he barely played his first, what was it,4 years in the nba which would cut that 13 years down to 9 real seasons. a hurt oneal averaged 13 and 4reb last year so you think its impossible for a healthy oneal cant get 17 8 this year?

You cant cut off 4 years like that. He was playing alot of basketball those 4 years, its not like just because he didnt get a whole lot of PT in games, he wasnt playing basketball at all. He has played 13 years, not 9. And he’s playoff stats were 16 and 5 I believe, and I dont see him gettin more than that. I just dont. He hasnt done anything major since about 4 or 5 years ago. Since the Fight at Auburn Hills. Why expect a 360 now?

i was using that as a point when you said hes played 13 years..it doesnt really matter. and those 4 years he played less basketball then most highschools do in a year so yeah there wasnt alot of wear and tear on his body so those 4 years arent nearly comparable to the 9 years after. and the stats i named were regular season stats. Also you really believe that 17pts and 8 reb is really a 360 (actually im sure you mean a 180). on top of that lets look at the “He hasnt done anything major since about 4 or 5 years ago”. The last 2 years he has been injured, the 5 years leading up to that
    pts reb
    05-24 9
    06-20 9
    07-19 10

now im pretty sure a healthy oneal playing against the centers of today can get 17-8 with no real problems esspecially since you actually proved that he averaged 16 and 5 while not fully healed in the playoffs

actually my mistake for not double checking…he didnt average 16 and 5 in the playoffs. He averaged 13 and 5
