When will the Memphis Grizzlie emerge as contenders I have bee waiting for quite some years after they trade Pau Gasol to the Lakers (dumbest trade ever). They have a nice core.
PG- Mike Conley, Marcus Williams maybe
    SG-OJ Mayo, Sam Young
    SF-Rudy Gay, Demar Carrol
    PF-Zach Randolph, Darrell Arthur
    C-Marc Gasol, Hasheem Thabeet

With that roster I know its not elite and still years away from the championshipa but when will they become a playoff contender is what I ask or put some legite pieces next to them. I mean I like Zach Randolph I think he is underrated and the media beats up on him for what has happened in the past but then as I am watching the draft I almost break down when they select Hasheem Thabeet because he is very raw and at this point in his career he is a project.
At the rate they are going it doesn’t seem to good with OKC blowing up as a dark horse. Portland, LAC, and Golden State Warriors. When will they get big like these teams or seem to be contenders for the 6th to 8th seed.

I dont see it. I think this year is more a spoiler role late in the season.

But on the bright side…2 1st round picks in the deepest draft since 03

Bad side….Rudy Gay will try to stick you up for big money this offseason

I know you are serious but lets be for real that pick will be 30. Which pick do you think the Grizzlies will have next year?

I’m not trying to be funny but honestly if the Grizzlies want to make the playoffs in the future they need to trade Randolph, Gasol, Gay, Conley, & Arthur.

I think Mayo needs to be the PG as well.

The Grizzlies will have a top 5 pick in 2010. I’m guessing they get the 4th pick ha.

I think the Grizz will make the playoffs in 2011-2012. And beyond if they keep Rudy Gay, but I dont see that happening. I think they will be too cheap to keep him around, they will build around Mayo.

Knicksboy- I agree about Mayo playing PG. Trade Conley. Williams is a great backup PG.

Also as far as depth is concerned I see Young as a SF & Carroll as a PF. Both will be solid pros but I wouldn’t want them to be starters. They are quality bench players.

OJ Mayo at PG would be a disaster. They wouldnt be a winning team if they played him significant minutes there. I think you play him at the 2 were he can create his shots, and not have to run a team.

I don’t think memphis is ever going to the elite with this ownership. You see this so many times. Teams with a great young core that look like future greats but never make it due to injuries and overpaying/not paying their young talent. Besides you don’t win a championship without a superstar on your team exluding detroit. LA has kobe, SA duncan, Miami wade and every other team has one. You don’t win a title without him and memphis has no one who I would consider near those guys.

All i can say Zach Randolph will hold this team back with all his shot taking/selection. Zach Randolph sigh….

I think it will be awhile before they are contenders, in a year or two they might be in the playoffs (don’t see it this year)

I don’t think Thabeet’s ceiling is Theo Ratliff, and if they can’t build themselves into contenders by the time Mayo’s contract is up he will be out of town.

Gay will stick around but I think the Grizz will end up over paying for him.

I think a change in the front office is what is most needed for the team, someone who will help inspire a winning attiude for the franchise.

Overall I hope I’m wrong though, as they deserve to be contenders, they never really have in the history of the franchise.

The Grizzlies should not have drafted Thabeet. He is going to be bust in the mold of Desagana Diop. They should have traded for a future pick to a team like the Knicks that could have used the services of a player like Tyreke Evans of Stephen Curry.
