Once upon a time, the NBA didn’t keep track of blocked shots. What’s the next statistic that the NBA will start to keep track of? If I had to guess, I’d say charges taken. What do you guys think?

How about deflections. IMO, deflections are almost as important as steal. Infact, most great defensive players get deflections that lead to steals or turnovers.

Yea, deflections that lead to steals would be a good stat. That way the person who got the deflection, but not the steal could be awarded somehow.

I think the same could be said for assists. For example when a player makes the right pass to another player who passes it to another guy who is open for the assist. I think they should make a statistic to award the original passer. Maybe that’ll encourage selfish assist guys like Baron Davis to make the right pass even if it doesn’t lead to them getting the actual assist lol.

I think in hockey, everyone that passes before a scored goal gets an assist as long as there is no dribbling in between passes. Dont quote me on that but i think thats how it works.

I think they will keep track of dunks a little bit more closely now.

And in hockey its the last two. The last two people who make a pass before a goal gets the assists.

but I remember in the 90’s, Chick Hearn used to argue that if a player passes the ball to a teammate who gets fouled and if he knocks down both freethrows, that player who passed it should get an assist.

You can’t keep track of Altered Shots because it is way to descretionary in nature. I mean almost all of Nate Robinson’s shots are “Altered shots” because most guys challenging a shot just has to stand there and wave his arms in the air. … like they just don’t care…. literally! and Nate will have to “alter” his shot.

There is no way of fairly recording altered shots!!

Deflections would be difficult to keep track of too because it’s hard to be objective. I mean, how would you define that category? If you have a large HDTV and sit close to the screen like I do, you can see that MANY passes are deflected by a fingertip or two on their way to the recipient. Do you award those? How much does the perceived intended trajectory of the ball have to change to be considered a “deflect”?

The only stat mentioned that could be implemented would be the Drawn Charge. This is because it is very easy to keep track as the REF motions (sometimes overly emphatically) that the offensive player has committed an offensive foul.

I don’t want to sound like an a-hole for shooting down your ideas, it’s just that to create a new statistical category, the NBA needs a carefully-laid-out set of detailed parameters for the new stat.

I agree with you about not being able to accurately keep track of altered shots or deflections, although I’m pretty sure whoever said altered shots meant the defensive player altering a shot without recording a block. Charges are’nt displayed in any box score, but they do keep track of them I believe. DFish is one of the all time best at collecting them. What do you think of my assist idea?

Dude. You made a great point on the pass that leads to the shooting foul. I think it shouldn’t be awarded based on whether the offensive player makes the free throws because those events are independent clauses in the language of Basketball. I think if it were implemented, which I highly doubt, it would have to be considered something that is NOT an ASSIST because it would take away from the tradition of the game if it were called an assist. It would bring dishonor to the likes of Gary Payton, Mark Jackson and the like because their records would be set higher if that ruling was implemented earlier.

thats the one problem. I have nothing against counting it as an assist since it leads to points just like any other assist. But it would taint the record books against guys from the past who did not have these assists counted for them. So I guess I’m against it. One thing I love about basketball is that it is not all about stats like baseball.

Dunks per game…. And its a good way to get people to drive to the rim instead of shooting jumpers all the time

I’d like to see them come up with some sort of official efficiency formula.. Something that included fg %s, 3 pt %s, turnovers, etc.
