Arc12345ParticipantSo if you’ve been following the NCAA season, it’s pretty clear Zion has separated himself as the number 1 pick. Obviously if any team lands number 1, it’s virtually a no brainer.
The next tier of draft prospects is interesting. I think the consensus is Barrett at number 2, which would be great for any team considering his list of accomplishments and what he’s bringing to a franchise.
Some think Morant will be 2nd, who I’m extremely high on. I don’t know if I’d take him over Barrett even though I think he’s the best guard prospect from a mid major since Damian Lillard (maybe best guard prospect SINCE Lillard period).
The Hawks continue to play above their expectations and are projected to pick 5th. If thst comes true, I think I’d probably go with Reddish, but the drop off after top 3 is pretty steep. So let’s say the Hawks get lucky and pick 3rd again like last year. Zion and Barrett are off the board…are you passing on Morant?
I know all of the Trae Young fans who are beyond reasoning with at this point will say, “We have our PG of the future” but I’m not passing on best player available. And I really hope we don’t trade down again because we see how that worked out for us. What would you do in this hypothetical? Any other prospects that jump out to you outside of Zion and Barrett?

CoachWyersParticipantRight now at the 5th spot I think they would be chosing from Hachimura, Keldon Johnson, Reddish, and Kevin Porter. None of those guys really fit a need for the Hawks so I think they would just go with the BPA approach so I think Reddish would be their man.

theEDGEParticipantIf the Hawks trade Prince I can see them picking Reddish.
Depending what the Hawks receive from the Prince trade I could see them go big with their second 1st rounder, maybe Gafford or gamble on Bol or Doumbouya.
With the 2nd rounders maybe target Bazley, Ponds and Dort.
That would leave the Hawks with a starting line-up of Young, Huerter, Reddish, Collins and either Gafford/Bol/Doumbouya with Ponds, Dort, Bembry, Bazley and Spellman on the bench.

Arc12345ParticipantIf the Hawks end up 3rd, do you pass on Morant because you already have Young? In my opinion absolutely NOT.

CoachWyersParticipantI don’t think they pass on anyone because of players they already have. Like I said in my post at who should be available at 5 they are going to take who they think is the best player available. So if they think Ja Morant is the best player available when they pick they would 100% take him even though they have Trae Young.

Arc12345Participant100% agreed with you.

KHAM83ParticipantYou don’t just collect talent and watch it work. You build a team with players that fits your system. Trae is the perfect pg for our system and Reddish looks to be a great fit.

Arc12345ParticipantNeed is irrelevant if you’re not a championship team or you have a young superstar at a position already. The Hawks are/have neither (at any position).

KHAM83ParticipantIt’s a combination of both. You seem like someone who just listens to what others post online, Trae is the real deal. This is coming from someone who desperately wanted us to take JJJ, and I think JJJ is looking good. If the bpa is way better than both your current player and better than the player that fits a need, then go ahead and take him. Especially when you’re in the rebuilding stage. However, Trae is looking more and more like a franchise pg and a Reddish fits perfectly and solves a need. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see us trade down again, depending on who’s available.

Arc12345ParticipantListens to what others post online? No. Not even close.
You think Trae young is a franchise point guard? He’s shooting 39% from the field and 29% from the 3 point line. And a solid but not even great 79% from the free throw line.
He’s averaging 7.2 assists and 4.1 TO’s per game for a solid 1.75 assists to turnover ratio. This has been better than expected.
If you think these stats make him a future franchise point guard, you don’t know basketball. The jury is still out on what Trae Young will become and if he’s a franchise PG or if he’s closer to DJ Augustine.
I’m tired of these Trae Young fans acting like he’s having a really good rookie season. It’s been solid at best. Has he shown flashes of great play lately? Sure, but I would hope so with all the opportunity he’s given. Huerter is the only Hawks rookie exceeding expectations.

The GoatParticipantIf I’m the Hawks with 2 lottery picks in a weak draft and no preferred target, you trade the picks for someone willing to overpay – either move up to get who you want or move them for a young player who fits your timeline and wants to move teams.
I really like Collins and Huerter. Young will be a good player, but Luka is going to be a superstar, so the Hawks need to really hit a home run with that extra asset they got in the deal.
I would be targeting Hachimura and Bol.

HitsterParticipantA lot depends on which team ends up picking where as Phoenix are going to be high on Morant and I don’t see Zion not going in top 2 most likely first.
If the Hawks ended up at say 5th and 10th would the team at 3 do a trade up if say Barrett was 3rd pick.
I think it will be a lot of BPA, Reddish, Rui or Keldon would all be in the mix at 5. If they are sold on Trae at PG then they may have a look at Alexander-Waller as a long term SG alongside him. He could be an option with either likely pick depending where they end up.
I think they will take a good look at Bol Bol as he is the one real wildcard in this year’s draft.

chrsw003ParticipantThey need a sf and center. They already have a long term sg. Red Velvet

HobbyOGParticipantDissapointed as a Hawks fan..we need to be losing. Not trying to compete to win games, for what???
0- Posted on: Mon, 01/21/2019 - 6:35am #1128487
Arc12345ParticipantRight there with you. We continue to overachieve and teams with significantly more talent continue to lose more games than us.
I’m shocked people would pass on Morant simply because we have Young. I really don’t see Young as a future All NBA type of player. I know he’s a rookie, and I’m not saying to give up on him, but to say he’s shown enough to not want to draft the BPA because he “fits our system” is absurd to me.
I’m also shocked people think you shouldn’t draft solely on BPA. The teams with the best players win, not the best systems. Systems are important, but to think you should draft players that fit your system instead of creating a system that fits your players doesn’t make sense to me.
