I realize Memphis is going to push to make the playoffs this year, but I think, if they stumble out of the gates, there is an obvious trade partner: the Wolves.

Grizzles receive: Wiggins, Teague, Dieng, and two protected 1st
    Wolves receive: Gasol and Conley

The Wolves start Gasol-Kat-Butler-3/D-Conley. The future of their team’s salary makes a lot of sense with that core. If they fill the roster with minimum contracts and small exemptions, they could still stay under the luxury tax. They are a contender in the West and a tough matchup for anyone with their size and skill. A big move like this might be enough to get Butler to resign, and even if he doesn’t the core of Conley-Gasol-Kat is pretty good for the next few years.

The Grizzles start over, getting really good value for their cornerstone pieces. Wiggins is on a long-term contract and can sell the fanbase on hope as a 20 point a game scorer. Teague and Dieng are solid veterans that help the young team develop and fill the holes left by Gasol and Conley. Moving forward, the Grizzles build around Wiggins, Jackson, and their 2019 pick (which they get if it stays in the top 8 ). If they build the team right, they would also have room for a max contract in the 2021 off-season.

I feel like that Conley contract is untradeable. Even if the Wolves absorb it, that’s an awful lot of potential to be traded away for two players who aren’t getting any younger, especially if Butler leaves anyway.

In fairness, the only potential is Wiggins, who has largely dissappointed in 4 seasons and doesn’t fit with Butler. Are they better with Wiggins/KAT or with Wiggins/Butler/Conley/Gasol, because it sounds like Butler is gone unless the team as a whole can take a big step forward.

It gives the Wolves a 2-3 year contention window, which is something they’ve never had. In the proposed trade, they also don’t have to give up Patton, who could be a starting quality frontcourt mate next to KAT one day.

I agree that Conley’s contract may be untradeable, but I wonder about a team like Minny. They are in a position where they may not even make the playoffs this year (8th seed last year and Nuggets and Lakers got better). Sometimes, you have to swing for the fences, and this deal lands two proven stars than can play in the playoffs.

I mean, it depends on how you define value. Even with Gasol and Conley, there’s no guarantee that those two first rounders won’t be low lottery picks. The Western Conference is pretty loaded. It’s just a super big swing for a team that still probably won’t reach the NBA Finals.

    Trade doesn’t work money wise.

54.6 million of Gasol and Conley times 1.25 equals 68.25, which is the max the Grizzles can receive. The Wolves send out 69.3. I guess, they’d need to include Rabb, Harrison, Brooks, or Selden to make it work.

This is the worst trade I’ve ever seen on here. The Wolves are bending over and taking it in you know where.

I hope you didn’t spend to long thinking about this. Because it’s terrible.

We disagree, but your level of comment is not exactly worthy of posting. A forum is a place for conversation. Please disagree, but explain why. Don’t just ad hominen it.

Gasol and conley too old now.  Conely will turn 31 and gasol 34 during this next season.

Maybe this would have been good 3 or 4 seasons ago but they are now on the decline and their contracts aren’t exactly "good value"

Those two will remain in Memphis til they cannot earn minutes or they completely retire, then the Griz will rebuild from there. Conley is great but no one else wants to pay him a kajillion dollars.

Reasons I would do the deal if I was Thibs: If my core was older,If I believed that the required players from my side was of lesser value and If I belived that these two players put me over the top or at least in the mix for WCF at least for multiple years…They move Diengs average deal also doesn’t hurt

However the reasons I wouldn’t do this deal if I was Thibs and if I was Gm is this:

Lets say Butler leaves next season(Hopefully not) they have no SF as average as Wiggins was he statsically improved on the offensive end he is probably better than anything they would get in.

Teague has less injury concerns than Mike C who has had feet and lower leg issues a lot. This is without even mentioning the overpriced deal.

Two picks is far two much especially if they aren’t protected or have them proteceted  up to low 20’s(20-24 range at least)

You would probably have to trade KAT also if you traded Wiggins as your roster wouldn’t be able to use him to best ability as your roster would be to old and slow to get out and run…

Why cripple your team to be average at best due to not much cap room or picks…
