high floorParticipantSo, the Suns 31st pick in the draft Elie Okobo has got my attention. Granted I knew very little about him in the pre-draft process….. but Phoenix felt confident enough to give him a 4yr contract after Summer League. And with light competition at the PG spot, there’s a chance he gets significant minutes this season.
I couldn’t sleep last night, and YouTube recommended that I watch a highlight video of him pouring in 44pts during the Euroleague playoffs. Very impressed with his versatility & how he affected that game in so many different areas. After that, I watched at least a half dozen more scouting videos & even some U20 FIBA footage. What is there not to like about this guy??
He can score in a serious variety of ways;
- hesitation dribbles
- floaters
- FT line & 3pt line
- left & right hand
- High IQ, makes the right pass & puts it on target.
- Spot up ability off the ball
He can also defend, and looks to have a bit of a mean streak on that side of the floor;
- explosive
- help-side defense
- aggressiveness
- wingspan / length
I saw the whole package. He’s only 20 years old, and i just don’t understand why this guy wasn’t picked higher! Phoenix has a steal, and I’m willing to push my chips to the middle of the table with this guy. I think he’s going to be really, really good.

high floorParticipantBut I haven’t seen many left-handed players with his profile & outside scoring ability at such a young age. I like the Roddy Beaubois comp a fair amount.
Come to think of it, i see a tiny bit of DeAngelo Russell (also a lefty). The way he pulls up going left, right & his hesitation has some similarities to Russell. But Elie gets to the cup quicker with more tenacity, and cares a lot more about defense. I saw a couple weak-side blocks from Okobo!
Maybe a little Goran Dragic too, on offense only though.
Tough to compare!!

juves4783Participanti think his fall had to do with a couple things.
1. his foot injury did not allow him to go through the full draft process.
2. he’s played sg for majority of his career so is more of a scorer than a natural floor leader. he transitioned to pg late in his basketball career and is very turnover prone. will take bad shots at times too.
i think his floor is a backup pg and i thought he was comparable to cameron payne (mainly due to payne’s prolific scoring college career, being lefty and similar size). i think his potential exceeds what we’ve seen out of payne.
since the suns are in no hurry to win, the 4-year deal makes sense. the team is young and will not contend in the western conference so giving him minutes (even if he’s not totally ready), will probably be the best on the job training. definitely give him some g-league run at the start of the year.
i really thought shaquille harrison played well in summer league too. he’s got good size and lead a starting lineup full of lotto picks. i hope the suns give him a longer look.

Dog_ShammdogParticipantI like him a lot and was impressed with how he ‘hit the ground running’ at summer league. He’s not the ‘raw’ prospect that many considered him to be imo. He’s super savvy and doesn’t rely on his athleticism despite being a very good athlete – that’s why I don’t like the Beaubois comparison. I think he’s more of a Terry Porter/Danny Ainge style point guard that keeps defenses honest with their scoring/shooting. Terry Porter is my comparison if I had to pick one. Both are 6’2" or so, physically strong, well rounded, two way players who play with poise and can effect the game on both ends.

OhCanada-ParticipantReminds me of Damien Lilliard. Obviously its gonna be hard for him to ever play at that level/be that productive but as far as playstyle and what skills you expect him to bring I think its a good comparison.

KIP BallerParticipantHe is pretty hard to find a perfect comp because he is unique but the best one I can come up with is Goran Dragic. They have the lefty connection and seems to be solid at many things (athletic, scoring, playmaking) without being elite at any one skill. People mention that defense may be a weekness but from what I saw of him, I’m not sure that will be the case. If he can be a starting caliber pg that will be huge for the Suns since that is the only position they dont have a long term core piece. His skillset seems to be very complimentary to their current roster.
