Well the Houston Rockets won the standoff I feel.  They got Capela for 18mil per on average which is only slightly above the 15 mil they originally offered.  Clint Capela wanted 25mil per and realistically was probably worth $21 mil.

Capela’s options were to take this deal or accept the qaulifying offer and wait a year for more money. Although I feel he couldv’e likely got 25 mil per year which would be 35 mil more over the 5 years he did the right thing by signing this deal.

He wouldve made 3.4 mil instead of 18.mil this year which is 15 mil difference so he technically couldve potentially made 20 mil more elsewhere signing next year.

First of all his minutes wouldve been threatened if the Rockets knew he was leaving. He could also be traded easily if on a qaulifying contract. Teams could deal with a 3.4 mil hit. He would have to prove he is not a benefactor of Harden and Paul’s playmaking and the Houston system.

Over the next 5 years he should have a very steady role on a contender while in James Harden’s prime. After this contract if he improves he can work towards a max and who knows how much those will be worth in 2023. Could be making $40 mil a year by then the way these contracts are sky rocketing.

He’s got a nice deal, you could argue he is worth more but his stats will be higher due to being under the D’Antoni system and having Harden and CP3 create for him. Teams guessed Houston would likely match so maybe stayed away from getting him to sign an offer sheet.

The Lakers may not have been convinced by him and Chicago has a young frontcourt so that ruled out two likely landing spots.

I think it’s a win win for both sides – Clint gets a good deal and will be on a contending team, he’ll have another tilt at FA before he is 30, so if his form holds, he can get another good payday then. Houston have got him inked for another 5 years and have got him for under $20 million a year which was likely their aim.

They placed a couple of incentives in his contract. If they make the Western Conference Finals he gets a million dollars. If he shoots 65% at the free throw line he gets $500,000.

Its a hard call really. Do you pay him or bank on someone else coming that would be an upgrade 2019 offseason?

2019 will have a stacked F.A class  but only so many to go around.

This move is one of those moves where you go Capella is good, but will he be legit 3rd option good? Going forward as you are paying him essentially like one. The Rockets core is Harden(should be fine),Capella still young enough to potentially improve,CP3 is the one contract I think the Rockets may regret paying Big money to ..

Personally I don’t know what the Rockets could do to be legit contenders this season or even going forward as they are essentially going to be what OKC was at the start of this offseason-Capped out and maybe a 2nd round out, due to cap hits due to big deals to 3 players being able to only bring in min deal players…

steal for the Rockets, that project would not work without Capela.

with that contract Capela goes to my very underrated list of players.

contract of some centers in the league:

    . Steve Adams: +25 mill/yr

    . Whiteside: +25 mill/yr

    . A.Drummond: +26 mill/yr

    . D.Jordan: 23 mill/yr

    . J.Noah: +18’5 mill/yr

    . T.Thompson: 18 mill/yr

    . Biyombo: 17 mill/yr

    . D.Favors+Gasol+Mozgov+Valanciunas+Dieng+Mahinmi: 16 mill/yr

not to mention he has a teammate that is not a franchise player earning 40mill and another one that doesn’t even play getting +20mill.

None of all those players offer anything close to what Capela brings to the table, as said huge steal.

Um I disagree with you. You say none of these players offer anything close to what Capella brings to the table?

Two definitely bring way more value than he does and the third is solely dependent on what Gasol you mean Pau or Marc.

Andre Drummond is technically the first or 2nd option on the Pistons+ made USA pool of players and isn’t playing with a P.G of CP3 or Hardens level…Swap him and Capella and I bet Andre does better than or at least the same as Capella. This is without even mentioning stats which Andre is beating him in.

Steven Adams: He is the main reason Westbrook,Paul and Melo had realatively easy looks by setting solid screens ,He helps anchor our defense which was top 4 until Roberson went down.See how our offense cratered vs Jazz when adams was in foul trouble if you don’t believe me. He lead the league in offensive rebounds per game I believe this alone was 5 per game,This is without mentioning his boards  could be even higher if he didn’t box out so Westbrook can start the fast break or that his F/T% is higher than Capellas… Meaning he can stay on the court in crunch time vs Capella who got hack a shaq/Capella..

Marc Gasol if this is who you meant: He is technically still the first or 2nd option on the Grizzlies and with Mike C a big reason they even make the playoffs due to  his versatile game and I am sure alot of teams would probably take him over Capella as long as you weren’t a running team Like OKC. If you meant Pau though he is washed and you are correct though.

Capela is not underated at all by the way, take him out of Houston and see what he does at best the same as D.Jordan as both have really similar games Maybe Andre Drummond. As all these players have the following flaws: close to rim players,Have to be set up by guards to look good and can’t hit a F/T to save themselves.. I give it one maybe two seasons and people will be saying he is overpaid or at least the deal looks average..

Don’t get me wrong though he is a good player but 90 million good not seeing it, This deal will probably look like a Tristan thompson like deal in 2-3 years and I am calling it now. Well unless he develops a 3 ball and reliable jumper that is lol.

see you’re the typical fan that gets fascinated by stats and still confuses stats vs impact.

your comment is the perfect reflection of what i was saying about Capela, that is, about how fans (and media) underrate him big time without comprehending his unique value.

you say things like: "Swap him and Capella and I bet Andre does better than or at least the same as Capella" or "take him out of Houston and see what he does"…i think actually that it is the opposite, there aren’t many players that are able to do what Capela does for houston, in fact i belive that if houston won 65 games in RS and almost beat GSW it was due to Capela’s huge improvement on defense this year; houston was the 6th best defense in the league and Capela is the anchor of the team, no other player on the team can do what Capela does and houston would not be houston without Capela.

Swap Capela for Drummond or Adams and houston is not a contender anymore, as Drummond is a horrible post defender and a very inconsistent rim protector and Adams although a very tough player and good defender, he cannot protect the rim and that is something absolutely required in order to compete for the title, unless you have the best collective defense in the league like the Spurs in past years or the celtics today.

Capela is such a unique type of player, he is the prototype of center needed in today’s game, that is, a super efficient player that finishes fast and easy around and above the rim and without demanding nor needing the ball, while being the anchor of the team and a consistent and reliable rim protector that allows perimeter defenders to press more. Capela is just like a Swiss watch, he never fails and is always consistent like a machine..not many player can bring that to the table and Drummond certainly doesn’t, at least for the moment.

today i’d say that only Gobert is listed above him and he’s the only one that could replace Capela on that team. D.Jordan could work there too, but only if he played like he used to because last year his defense was trash. There is a young player that i really like that fits this mold of player and could even improve it as he can hit FT’s, that is Jarret Allen, but he still needs to prove it, although i believe brooklyn will make the playoffs this year and it will be in big part due to Allen.

18 instead of 25… No fancy cars or restaurants for the next 5 years then. Tough for him, let’s hope he’ll get over it. His self-esteem as a person must be seriously wounded though.
