Larry Sanders was a tantalizing prospect at one time for the Milwaukee Bucks. So much so that the team awarded him a 4yr, 44million dollar contract extension regardless of the fact that he carried more red flags than a ‘Double Dare’ obstacle course.

I see many similarities in game & personality with Boston’s recent first round selection Robert Williams. Both are prolific athletes with awesome physical profiles for the Center position, but carry serious questions about their focus and desire to be sustainably great NBA players. If Robert Williams did not have such a checkered past & reputation, he would have almost assuredly been a lottery selection in last month’s draft.

To date, Williams has already missed his opening press conference with the Boston media the day after the draft. And less than a week afterward, it was reported by The Athletic’s Jay King that Williams missed his flight for his first summer league practice. Not good.

After Larry Sanders had that great 4 month stretch (in his contract year), he was awarded a big payday. Then he plummeted as fast as any player I’ve seen not due to injury. Boston’s Front Office is as good as it gets, and they likely won’t make the same gamble if they feel Williams isn’t dependable / committed to the game long term for their franchise. But this situation could turn very interesting for the Celtic’s FO if Robert Williams is good & garner’s media support in the process…..

I think marijuana use also played a part in Sanders being a head case. Don’t think the same issue is there with Williams.

Williams has gone to a powerhouse team and he’ll have a top good, excellent front office and good locker room leaders around him. So he is in a good position to succeed. The problem could be even if he is a bit player on a successful team he’ll feed into the success and might start believing his own hype and living the dream.

His draft status fell a bit but he still has a nice rookie deal and with serious money in his pocket, might start enjoying the bright lights a bit.

But I hope being in a strong organization he’ll knuckle down, learn from the likes of Baynes and Horford who are old school veterans and make the most of his undoubted ability.

First of all get your story correct. Williams did not miss the opening press conference. He missed an opening conference call with Ainge the morning after the draft, reportedly due to a miscommunication about time and confusion about the timezones. Still annoying, but that’s a bit different.

Then Williams flew back to Texas to visit family and grab some personal items. He missed his flight back to Boston, causing him to miss the first practice.

Both are very annoying to Celtic fans.

But drawing a comparison between him and the all-time flame-out-of-the-NBA-only-kept-playing-to-get-paychecks-so-i-could-fund-my-marajuana-habit is a bit much.

I think Williams just needs structure. He’s immature it seems. Sanders had real deep issues. Nevermind your comparing what a top 15 pick to pick 27. If he’s Sanders that was a good pick, just like Sullinger was even though he ate himself out of the league. I think the issues are fixable as he grows up. He couldn’t have a better team. You’ll find out quickly because the Celtics will move on quickly if he doesn’t get his act together. He needs a friend ASAP, like Perk was to Rondo.

With Sanders it was mental thing, a depression, with Williams it’s lack of understanding and feel of the game, that’s why he was so underachiever and poor in college for his tools, so I see him more like a javell mccgee type…
