OhCanada-ParticipantLuka Doncic is the best player in this years draft class and everyone in the NBA knows it. GM’s, scouts, players, coaches, owners are all aware of this. Ayton may have the highest longterm upside but Doncic is an NBA ready star from day one and will be a bonifide playmaker that makes Dallas playoff competitive immediately.
Heading into the draft Doncic and his group of advisors made a list of teams he would join and threatened to resign with Real Madrid if a team that was not on that list drafted him and held his rights. The only team in the top 6 of the draft on his list was the Dallas Mavericks.
The Suns hired Igor Kokoskov Luka’s former National team head coach in attempts to recruit him and Vivek Ranadive and Vlade Divac of Sacramento met with him before the draft in Spain attempting to recruit him but were turned down.
Despite not being able to draft Doncic the Suns and Kings could not put Doncic or Dallas in a compromising position and trade down to acquire more assets because 5th was too far to move down as Ayton was widely considered an acceptable pick and Bagley was a perfect fit with Sacramento because hes probably the only guy other then Porter that wanted to play there. The Hawks were able to trade down because the next guy on their board was Trae Young due to their belief in John Collins as their bigman of the future.
Reports came out that Sacramento was so heavily invested in Micheal Porter because they were threatning to trade the #2 pick to another team (not Dallas) on Doncic’s list in the lottery in order to drive up the cost for Dallas to acquire the #2 pick in order to draft Doncic but in the end Dallas called their bluff and did a deal with the Hawks.
This is not being massively publicized because the NBA and the Media dont want one and done college prospects to play one year overseas, enter the draft, then demand what team they want to play for and threaten to just resign with their international sqaud if the NBA teams do not comply. This info will probably surface in full detail from somebody who knows the details alot better then me in the future but right now its being kept pretty quiet.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantI’m worried about Dallas. I can see them missing the playoffs easily. Should have just stood pat and taken BPA, i.e, doncic or bamba

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantI think Dallas will miss the playoffs, but if they are convinced Doncic can be Petrovic 2.0/max worthy player in four years, then giving up the #9th or #10th pick might not be too expensive.

kobyzParticipantSo why Mavs had to move up if they were the only team in the top 6?

OhCanada-ParticipantAtlanta wouldve traded their pick to a different team for a better offer or threatened to.

HitsterParticipantThe idea of a player being drafted and not wanting to come over or play for that team is always a fun one. A team could waste a pick but might almost say **** you to the player and refuse to trade them. Would someone like Doncic just turn his back on the NBA and have stayed in Europe.
If they come over 3 years after they were drafted then the contract can also change so that complicates things even more.
If there is truth in this story then it will be interesting if it all does come out and would all teams have known who Doncic would and wouldn’t have played for,

OhCanada-ParticipantThe other team was New York. Doncic and Porzingis are good friends and Porzingis was in Real Madrid rehabbing and recruiting him since spring.

ChoppyParticipantDidn’t Dario Saric do a similar thing? He wasn’t sold on Philly so stayed with his Euro team for a few years until he decided to come over. I could be remembering wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s how it played out.

EndlessknightParticipantWrong.
Dario signed in Turkey before the draft, that’s what caused him to fall to 12th. Most mocks had him 6-8th before he signed in Turkey. He said he didn’t think he was ready to for the NBA at the time. It had nothing to do with the Sixers.

khaled_a_dParticipantWhy is Luka is with Dallas?
The answer is:1-Size do matters:
Even in this league of small ball, GM will still fall in love with big men. One franchise decided they won’t pass on a guy that has the full physical tools for bigman (Size, strength, athleticism, height & length). who has the talent that made scouts compare him to David Robinson, other franchise decided that they love another bigman who has similar body (check measurements) of B.Griffin with game compared to Bosh. They both passed on Luka2-In era of small ball, a team was surely gonna love the Nate Archibald of college basketball.
Trae was compared to Curry, many rumors if the trade didn’t happen Magic would have selected him 6th, people was really dreaming if they thought he was gonna fall all way to 8 or 10.3-Cuban always think he is the smartest guy in the building:
Donnie loved Luka, and Luka looked NBA ready, or 7 years Cuban always thought he is the smartest NBA owner and he failed, he always thought he is capable of ast rebuilding post Dirk and it failed, Mavs had to start tanking but Luka looked like a guy who would immediately worth building around and scratch the whole tamking thing, that was clear when we refused to take Kent Bazemore but decided to give top 5 protected first round. Mavs thought they will be good enough soon and will be able to attract FA in 20194-Sometimes you have to swallow up your pride:
-No, Luka didn’t make a list and didn’t say he won’t come, people started saying that after politically correct answer about not knowing if he won’t be Real Madrid player next year.
Quick reminder: Real are bigger sport lubs than any NBA team most probably, and basketball is their second most popular sport, he won’t spit in their face saying he is leaving during celebrations, He made it clear during pre-draft meeting he is coming and Mavs said the trade was agreed when 1st pick was made btw.-Mavs hates Bill Duffy, Bill hates the Mavs. but they had to swallow their pride for Luka. their was probably interest from both sides but it wasn’t in Luka hands
