The NBA decided to announce their individual awards this year with their new show and decided to drag this thing well beyond the playoffs. Personally I really don’t like it since my focus is already on the next season and feel this way the awards are way to disconnected from the whole season but this is another discussion.

The following will be announced tonight:

Six of the awards being given out were voted on by the media:

    MVP

    Coach of the Year

    Rookie of the Year

    Defensive Player of the Year

    Sixth Man Award

    Most Improved Player

Other awards include Executive of the Year (voted on by the league’s executives), Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year (voted on by the players), NBA Sportsmanship Award (voted on by the players) and the NBA Cares Community Assist Award (voted on by fans and a panel of judges).

Same for everything except I’ll change it up a little and go Brad Stevens for COY

D"Antoni can’t win  COY he’s not even in the running as a finalist.

Gobert over Davis, Gobert’s numbers are undeniable as the best defender, the only concern was how many games he missed, he still is deserving. Davis is a great player and by far better offensively but not defensively.

      Agree with Harden MVP

Simmons I think will win ROY but Mitchell should, ( Mitchell did win ROY by his peers)

COY by bet would be Casey, not my choice but eastern bias win give it to him. Snyder deserves to win.

      Like Williams for 6th man

      Like Oladipo for MIP

Well done. You picked them all!

I guessed all the winners right too, but didn’t see this thread in time to win the meaningless internet points haha.

I disagree that Mitchell should have won ROY. Any other year, he wins by a landslide obviously, but Simmons had one of the best rookie seasons of all time.

Seeing uneducated fans on twitter commenting how Mitchell was robbed is hilarious. Not saying you fit in that uneducated category of course. Mitchell had a legitimate case, I’m a Jazz fan, and he’s one of my favourite players.

I think the main thing that stood out to me in the arguments for and against was the uniqueness of Simmons’ season relative to his peers.

29 other NBA players averaged 20 points like Mitchell.

        Only three players averaged 15/8/8…..

LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Ben Simmons.

To get a little deeper – Simmons had the advantage over Mitchell in the following categories:

Rebounds per game, assists per game, steals per game, blocks per game, FG%, charges drawn, win shares, deflections, PER, Opp FG%, Net rating, Triple doubles, double doubles, Assists:TO, Pass:TO, Fouls drawn, clutch FG%, Player Impact Estimate, Screen Assists, Real plus/minus, points/FGA, Opp efficiency, H2H wins, loose ball recoveries, points in the paint, Eff FG%, true shooting %, And-ones made, VORP, team record, Defensive Points Saved, True Points Added, points responsible for, <fouls per game, BPM, defensive BPM, offensive rating, defensive rating.

Mitchell had the advantage over Simmons in only:

Points per game, 3pt%, FT%, 20+ point games, offensive BPM, clutch points, <TO per game, offensive points added, dunk contests won.

In all the metrics and advanced stats that NBA teams and analysts use, I’d say that’s pretty comprehensive.

I get that Mitchell is more likeable and people find Simmons’ introversion comes across as aloof at times…. but I think a lot of people (casual fans in particular) can’t put their personal feelings about each player aside.

I also know a lot of people spout the "NoT a Ro0KiE!!!" nonsense as well….. Seriously though, if people honestly think missing a whole season with a BROKEN FOOT is somehow an advantage compared with playing a college season and improving by playing…. then they’ve obviously never played sport before.

Ask any athlete if they would improve more by WATCHING their sport or PLAYING their sport… and I think 100 out of 100 athletes you ask would rather improve by playing. That argument is really foolish, in my humble opinion. Imagine how great Simmons would be if he was in a major car accident and had to take THREE years off to recover from his injuries!?!?!

        Ridiculous.

Sorry for ranting. It just pisses me off that people can be so unintelligent.

Very good points, Simmons is a very good all around player, a player most every team would want. I think being the go to player, leading scorer,  leader, as a rookie is much harder to accomplish than just putting up stats like Simmons did. You can’t argue that Simmons has the better stats if you consider all the stats youi posted but to me ROY is who is the best player as a rookie, Mitchell proved to be the best player on his team, leading scorer, go to guy.   Simmons isn’t that good yet even though he is very good at many things.

Before I comment I have to say I hate the NBA Awards ceremony waiting until after the playoffs to announce the NBA Awards. If they want to keep the ceremony I’d prefer they move it earlier.

    MVP – James Harden

    ROTY – Ben Simmons

    6th Man – Eric Gordon

    Most Improved – Victor Oladipo

    Defense – Rudy Gorbert

    Coach – Dwane Casey

Should be straight after the season ends, before the playoffs.

Exactly. Plus so many NBA fans are embarrassing themselves believing that the playoffs somehow impact the various regular season awards.

The above guesses are all pretty good, ive got no problem with any above suggested winners. There will be Donovan Mitchell fans upset if Simmons wins, but Simmons should and he will.

I have to say that after one of the best regular season, playoff and finals ive ever seen from any nba player, it does seem something is amiss to have Lebron walk away empty handed. Remarkable season.

This time of the season, nobody cares anymore. Why not go back to handing it out during the playoffs where the winners will proudly raise it in front of their hometown fans? It lacks a sense of pride with all these corny Grammy-like award shows.

I’d definitely prefer they went back to the old way or did the awards show immediately after the regular season ends.

They even handed out the award to Coach Casey who was FIRED one week AFTER the Raptors got eliminated. It’s meaningless at this point. They need to go back to the old ways where they hand out the awards during the playoffs..
