Who will have the better season between Stanley Johnson and Justise Winslow, and why?

In a vacuum, I like Winslow more as a player. He’s more cerebral on the court, rebounds, defends and passes better. His shooting percentages were also much higher than Johnson (albeit on lower volume). Even though his raw numbers don’t look extremely impressive, he is definitely developing nicely.

Johnson’s lack of development to this point in his career has been concerning and he has put himself in the situation where this is pretty much a make or break year for him. Detroit is thin on the wing which in theory should set him up to get plenty of mins. However, when you start a front line of Drummond and Blake, you can’t have a sf beside them who shoots such an awful percentage from 3. His form doesn’t look awful, but he needs to really find a way to become more reliable from outside and also improve his overall awareness on the court. The physical tools are there, but right now there are just too many holes in his game to be a rotation player on a contending team.

Thank you for your feedback. I’ve been leaning more towards Winslow as well, but something tells me that Johnson will place a ton of pressure on himself to bounce back.

I think Stanley Johnson.  They have both had up and down inconsistent careers so far, but I think Johnson has a higher ceiling and better path to playing time.

How much of Dwane Casey’s change will help him flourish?

DC is a master motivator. He will have Stanley Johnson’s confidence at an alltime high he will address what needs to be improved and have him working his hardest to improve every day. The downside to Casey is he isnt actually the guy that teaches the skills or x’s and o’s that the players need to improve he more or less teaches them the right mentality to approach their workouts if that makes sense. Johnson obviously needs to improve shooting and Casey has a sly type of negotiating and authoritive voice that should get Johnson in the gym putting up shots but Casey’s assistants will be the ones teaching him proper form and running the drills.

I grasp your take on Casey; he and I are in the same boat in regards to your analysis as him be the motivator type.

I’m with you all on the Stanley Train. I think SVG’s coaching wore very thin on him over 3 years and Casey will help him no end. I honestly believe that his problem is confidence more than anything. Well, I’m trying to talk myself into it anyway.

Id say Justise due to versatility. In fact, this is out of the box, but i think Winslow could almost be trialled in a Draymond Green role. I am at a point with him where i think he is good enough to give him a shot at it, but hes not good enough where im confident he will be a success. Playing the small ball 5 would be a difficult change, but he is a swiss army knife, and similar to Draymond who was considered a 3 man with a weak jumper. It may be crazy enough to work.
