IlladelphParticipantTrevon Duval went undrafted and just signed a summer league deal with Houston. Good for him. He seems like a good kid and I hope that he makes his NBA dream come true.
Now I never would have thought that I would have written the above 3 sentences about Trevon Duval a year ago. A year ago he was a top 5 ranked high school player, the #1 PG in his class, and a Duke commit who everyone assumed was a one-and-done player. What the heck happened to him?
I have read that anonymous scouts were turned off by his poor free throw percentage and his sub 60% shooting percentage, and sub 30% three point percentage. I also read that anonymous scouts think he didn’t play defense at Duke. And hey, if you can’t score, and can’t play defense, then what good are you right?
BUT, Duval was one of the most productive PGs in Duke history when it comes to assists, and steals. He has a 6’9" wingspan and has elite athleticism. And he seemed to catch fire by the end of the year and scored 20 points against Kansas in the tournament. But scouts say his shot is "broken", and he shot poorly from the charity stripe at Duke so he doesn’t project as a shooter?
But all that being said, isn’t an elite athlete, former top 5 national recruit, decent defender, and capable ball handler, merit a late 2nd round pick at least? Undrafted? Wow. Thoughts?

I.C.Y.U.NV.MEParticipantIt’s not hard to see why he wasn’t drafted. His jumper is BROKE. On a lot of his shots he’d be left completely wide open and still barely draw rim. I remember something about him having vision problems and it affecting his shot. Maybe NBA teams looked further into that and saw red flags. His assist to turnover numbers were pretty good on the year, but his overall decision making was horrendous at times. You never knew which Tre you’d get. He played well against Michigan St. and toward the end of the season. Even carried us during stretches of the Kansas game. However, I can recall at least 2 games where he had a dumb, unforced turnover in the final minute of the game that ultimately resulted in us losing. It’s mind boggling honestly. He has some potential as a playmaker and a defender (which I think he was underrated as during the season because of the zone), but idk if he’ll ever be an adequate enough shooter. He’s Rondo with far inferior decision making and playmaking skills.

whiteflashParticipantThat’s the same comparison I’ve been making for awhile. He’s also definitely not an elite athlete by NBA standards. So you have a good, but not great athlete who can’t shoot, can’t consistently get by his man, doesn’t finish well in traffic, doesn’t defend well and is an average decision maker with the ball. It’s actually quite obvious why he didn’t get drafted.

Lotto StudParticipantJust on conditions of his current situation and not overall play, he brings me a flashback to Marquis Teague’s journey.

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantThe Teague comparison is very accurate

RicoParticipantExactly why I don’t want to see the one year rule go away. Imagine if some team wasted a top 10 pick on this kid.

kobyzParticipantNo reason he can’t be what dejonte murry is…

cominup7ParticipantWith Duval signing with HOU it immediately makes me think of Patrick Beverly as the type of player he can develop into in time, rangy and athletic PG with elite defensive potential off the bench

timinator1ParticipantHe was a decent point guard, with decent decision making but not much offense. And he had the curse of being on a team where he was the 5th option offensively, so he didn’t get a chance to do enough. He should have stayed in school, been the leader of the team with Zion and Cam.

ndbigdaveParticipantThe two biggest things that I have read, saw and heard about relating to Duval was:
1 – Shooting
2 – Vision issuesBoth have been mentioned above and obviously I am not privy to any medical reports, but I cant help but think that the medical issue is very real and that he simply had not shown the growth you would want in the shooting department during and immediately after the season.
The PG position in the NBA has proven to be quite deep and players who can provide at least limited contributions have been found on the trash heap (Quinn Cook, Yogi Ferrell immediately come to mind).
I also agree that there is potential there from an athletic stand point and his build. No doubt if he committed himself to defense he could be a grit-and-grind type defender with enough wiggle to penetrate and kick on offense (especially during the regular season against second team units). The biggest fear is that the shot never develops and the eyesight is a problem that could end his career.
Without knowing the medicals I cant make a definitive decision, but in the modern NBA not being able to shoot at the PG position is a borderline death sentence especially in light of the other issues he has with his game.
If the vision thing isnt a huge issue or can be corrected, then a 2-way contract with lots of time in the G-League could produce a quality backup PG.
