Just saw that this site’s latest mock has Trae Young going to the Hawks at 3. I have to say I’m a bit surprised, as I really can’t see them passing up Doncic if he’s available. Clearly Schroder wants out and at least one of their first round picks has to be on a lead guard, but is Trae a reach at 3? At one point this year he had a legit case, but I think his overall inconsistency in the second half of the year combined with his very obvious turnover problem is more than enough to push him out of the top 5. Personally, I think Trae is far more likely to succeed in Orlando, and should be the 6th overall pick, but most mocks seem to have him pencilled in at 8 to Cleveland. Thoughts?

I saw that they will be working/have done a work out with Trae so there must be some rumour they are high on him. Trae has been up and down the the draft board in the last few months but I haven’t read anything that the Hawks are high on him. But in today’s NBA, a team may be reluctant to pass on someone who could possibly be the next Steph Curry.

Ironically there is a rumour that the Suns are high on Trae too but as they seem locks to take Ayton at first, they would need to get another pick well inside the top 10 to try and get Trae. They have 16th pick but would potentially need to offer up one of Bender, Warren or Jackson as Booker would be off limits and Chriss would not be enough to offer.

If I were one of the Atlantas, Sacramentos, Orlandos, etc. of the world, I would swing for the fences in the draft. Meaning, a single draft rarely makes a big difference for a franchise unless they get a game-changing, hall-of-fame player. So I can understand gambling on Young or Porter with a pick as high as 2 or 3. It’s maybe more risky (it seems like Bagley, for instance, is considered a lock to be at least a very good pro). But to me it’s worth it to take a chance on getting that LeBron/Durant/Curry type player.

Young was double teamed on 43.7% of touches past half court in his freshman year at Oklahoma, the closest a PG has ever been to that was Stephen Curry at 31.4%.

Still posted 27.4 ppg and 8.7 apg as a 19 year old freshman. I think he’s going to be a star. I’m a Hawks fan and hope we draft him.

The problem he’s so bad on defense you couldn’t even hide him…

Young would just have to be an out and out scorer if his defence is an issue or you try to get an elite defensive guy alongside him. The acid test would be could he score more points than he’d give up.

If he’d been in last year’s PG heavy draft where do we think he could have gone given there wasn’t a huge difference in upside between Fultz at 1 and Smith at 9. So i’d honestly be unsure where Young would have potentially slotted in?

He’s the wildcard of the draft. Can score at will, but can he do that against NBA level athletes night in and night out? He’s also not a great athlete, but has quickness. Doesn’t have a big wingspan like Sexon. I  think the Ringer nailed it, he can be like Steph or Seth Curry. That is a massive range, but I agree. I wouldn’t take him at 3.

Seth Curry averaged 2.1 assists per game in college compared to Trae Young’s freshman year of 8.7 assists per game. That right there proves its a pretty bad comparison. Young is a much better ball handler, passer with much better vision.

It wasn’t meant as a direct comp, but to show you the range of a type of player he could be. His floor to ceiling is massive.

If I am a GM in the Top 10 I think long and Hard if he is worth the risk because he has that major Boom or BUUST about him.

Me personally I wouldn’t take him any higher than 8th overall(Cavs could be crazy enough to do it if they think he will convince Lebron on staying) or as low as  16 suns(who also kind of like him)  or 18 -Spurs.

As I sort of see a whole lot of Jimmer fredette in his game-Watch his highlights and see the similarity in their games..Both got the green light to shoot and both were hailed as the next coming of Steph…Both were undersized and not strong enough B-ball I.Q to be a full time P.G

However I see his Range most likely being 6-16  Magic,Knicks,ClippersCavs,Suns all make sense to draft him.

Woudn’t suprise me if the Hawks took him..Look at the last 10 years of players drafted by the Hawks, thier picks are ALWAYS head scrathers.

You don’t understand basketball if you think Trae Young is similar to Jimmer Fredette. That’s just a flat out joke.

Young’s understanding of how to manipulate ball screens, read and react within milliseconds, etc vs the defense is already at an elite level. Starting day one, he’ll make his defenders pay for going under the screen and he’ll make bigs pay for being in "contain".

Even if bigs soft or hard hedge, he’ll kill you. He can split the hedge. He can retreat and shoot. He can retreat and attack. He can attack bigs in "contain" to the outside or inside. He uses his hesi and has several freeze moves, change of pace moves, etc to destroy bigs in contain. He can snake the screen or just flat out blow by the outside hip of a big in contain. He can pull up or use his floater as well. He’s patient and can shield or use the "butt shield" (pause) to hold off his defender. He has the vision to hit the roll man, pop man or shooters who relocate after their defender drops down to help contain the roll. Try to "ice" the screen? He still makes the right reads. Defender trying to cheat the screen? He’ll reject and still makes the right reads.

And what’s scary is he’s only going to get better as a professional. Imagine if he starts to understand how to relocate after giving up the ball like Curry? He’ll start to make his teammates better just by being on the floor. He certainly has his flaws, but he should be a top 6 lock in my opinion.
