IlladelphParticipantHaving 3,4,or 5 rounds to the NBA draft makes no sense for players. All it does is lock up more players’ rights for teams. As it stands, the only guys who actually play an NBA game are the first rounders and about a third of the second round. Most of the players in this group are washed out after 3-4 years. Currently 2 rounds are more than enough for the talent coming out of college and internationally. Very rarely does un an undrafted player make it to the NBA.
What I think the NBA should do is to guarantee contracts for the 2nd round. That is a very inexpensive move that would lure a lot of borderline NBA-level guys who are in college to come out. Guys that are currently late 1st/early 2nd round projections would be way more likely to come out if they were guaranteed a bit of mony. Even if every 2nd rounder got say a 3 year contract with only the first year guaranteed, at a 1 million dollars per year, that would be huge. Guys who are on the bubble would be guaranteed one million dollars for at least getting picked. If they don’t make the team, they have a cool milli to start out their lives, or buy a first class ticket to the Euroleague or China or wherever. Teams would hopefully get a 2nd round full of possible first rounders, for a very small price. If the player pans out, they get a player for 3 years for only 3 M. If the player can’t hack it, they cut him, and write off a paltry 1 M dollars. One million dollars is nothing for NBA teams to have access at a much higher quality 2nd round at bargain basement rates. Thoughts?

DJR1957ParticipantProbably a reasonable compromise. Let the teams which didn’t make the playoffs have a third round pick.

BallerScriptParticipantOut of all the ideas to do with expanding the draft, this is the one I like the most.
It doesn’t force playoff teams into wasting picks on players they can stash overseas so they can sign players they want so they can contend.
It doesn’t flood the NBA with as many rookies as adding a whole extra round.
It would possibly decrease the value of a second round pick to struggling teams who have multiple second rounders when considering future trades.I like the idea of a 15 pick third round
It’d give specialist players a big chance
I imagine 5 or so decent players would come out of the third round on average which sounds okay because out of the 60 original draft picks only 30-40 end up sticking around as a end of bench guy at the minimum.0

SwatLakeCityParticipantPretty much every NBA team has developmental team affiliate, so the 3rd round could just be teams selecting for their appropriate G-league team affiliate. If a certain team decides after some practices and maybe even games that their 3rd round pick has proved himself to make it on thier team, then that team can sign him. Or if that certain team has had numerous injuries, and their draftee may very have well proven himself at this point, that team can then sign him or add him on a non-guaranteed contract. There have been alot of players who were never drafted but have actually made it on an NBA team. Yogi Ferrell, Salah Mejri, Royce Oneal are a few that I can name off the top of my head without doing any research, but I’m sure if I did I could find a lot more. So I don’t think its a bad idea to have 3 rounds. Now after that a 4th or 5th round, I think would be a bit too much, but 3 rounds, yes I can see it, and I would definitely welcome it for all 30 teams, not just for 14.
