high floorParticipantI’ve developed a bit of an enthusiasm for Duke’s Wendell Carter the past month or so. And even though he has a great likelihood to land in the top 8, there is a chance that he’s available at 9 when the Knicks pick. So here’s my thoughts on a possible deal the Knicks & Magic could discuss:
Orlando Receives: #9 pick, Future 2nd round pick, Courtney Lee
New York Receives: Aaron Gordon, Jonathan Simmons
Why Orlando does this deal: Orlando does not need to commit max (or near max) salary to Aaron Gordon right now. AG is a great complimentary piece, but Orlando is too far away from competing & in salary cap hell right now (due mostly to Biyombo & Fournier) to be thinking about paying Gordon, a #2 or #3 option, max money. Courtney Lee helps make the numbers work & gets to return home to the team that drafted him. But the real reason Orlando does this deal is for the opportunity to draft Wendell Carter. I think Wendell Carter has Al Horford upside. And if Orlando drafts Trae Young at 6, then you have an interesting core of Trae Young / Jonathan Isaac / Wendell Carter moving forward. I really, really like Isaac long term. Plus each players skillset is diverse….. with the ability to score in a number of different ways with some imaginative coaching. And perhaps most importantly, they’ll still be bad….. enabling them to draft another core player in 2019.
Why New York does this deal: New York is more ready to compete right now, and adding Aaron Gordon would be great value for pick 9. Plus Jonathan Simmons is better served on a competing team, and has a very cap friendly contract (only paid 6.5M per year). I really like the idea of Gordon at the 4, KP at the 5, with Enes Kanter playing C minutes to give Kristaps a break from the physicality. New York is not compromising their young core / timeline as Frank/Kristaps/AG are all under 24….. and has a nice complimentary piece in place in Tim Hardaway Jr in the backcourt. To help spread the offense.
Both teams still have salary cap work to do. Joakim Noah’s contract is terrible, and Orlando is stuck with Biyombo, Fournier & Augustin’s deal for at least the next couple years. Ouch!!! But Orlando has that really nice Phoenix 2nd rounder from the Elfrid Payton trade….. so maybe they could attach that as a sweetener to a deal to get rid of one of their albatross contracts.
So final thoughts……… Orlando needs to extend their timeline with regards to their core players contracts & salary cap commitments. Don’t pay Gordon now….. even though he has All Star potential. Draft Wendell Carter, be non-competetive again next year, and secure another top 6 pick in next year’s draft to select BPA in 2019 draft. New York was in the playoff mix last season. Adding Aaron Gordon is an intriguing & exciting fit next to Porzingis that could have MSG rocking next year. Add Jonathan Simmons to the mix, and New York is likely in the playoffs next season.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI definitely like it for Orlando. To get 2 top 10 picks in this draft would be ideal, although I’m not sure carter will be available at 9. They would also get something in return for Gordon instead of losing him for nothing or paying him big money. My guess is that the Knicks would try to attach Noah’s contract, which would likely be a deal killer.
For the Knicks I’m not as sure. Gordon/ Porzingis could be an intriguing frontcourt, but I disagree that this team is really anywhere near contention right now, especially with Porzingis sidelined for what could be most of the season. They are still rebuilding and the best way to do that is through the draft, which is why I’d be hesitant to give up any lottery pick at this point. They’d have to be really enamored with Gordon and be willing to commit to him long-term on a big salary as one of their foundational pieces going forward. I’m not sure he has shown enough yet to make that type of commitment.
It’s an interesting idea but my guess is the Knicks would ultimately pass.

thetruth87ParticipantI don’t think this trade is terrible, but your assertion that NY is more ready to compete right now is not correct. KP will be out half the year or more next year, and as a Knicks fan I would much rather have the young controllable player available at 9 than trade for Gordon and have to pay him big money.
I think a much better plan for NY would be to stand pat, and use the #9 pick, have Fizdale set a culture and try to develop the young talent already on the roster. In all likelihood we should have a top 5 pick in 2019 to pair with #9 this year, KP, and a good amount of cap space for the 2019 free agency cycle.
2018-19 is pretty much going to be a lost season for the Knicks, so I’d rather stay away from adding a big money acquisition like Gordon (although he’s still young and very talented), and develop the young controllable talent already on the roster until KP is back to 100% and we have some cap room to work with for the 2019-2020 season.

CU.LIONSParticipantI gave a thumbs up as I like the trade and reasons given for both teams

HobbyOGParticipantCan Orlando trade a RFA? Gordon is a RFA this summer, don’t think you can do that.

220ParticipantYeah no team can deal a restricted free agent unless it’s a sign and trade.

BeardedDragon84Participantother than the fact orlando cant trade Gordon, it’s not a terrible idea from their side. They should restart the time frame for their core with some young talent and Isaac will be a power forward. on new York’s side, I don’t think Porzingis wants to play center most of the time and Gordon is better suited at the 4. With Porzingis out most of next year New York would never do this, they’d rather be bad next year and let the 8 pick and Frank develop with lots of touches free from high expectations, and rest their hopes on a high 2019 draft pick.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantNy is screwed as long as they have that Dolan guy who kicked Charles Oakley out of the Madison square garden. So your point doesn’t matter

Andv1 WaitingParticipantI don’t think K.P is overelly keen on playing Center-Kanter played it most of the time, which means you would essentially be getting Gordon to be a 6th man.
and
Do you really want to max out Gordon? As they would be locked into THjr,Gordon and Soon to be K.P…
Which doesn’t exactly make me go they are close to contending and would be close to be capped out..
They probably should go the following route for 1-3 seasons- Move some of the bad deals ,semi Tank to get some reasonable picks/Develop players and then be players in Free agency in 2020/2021..
Build around K.P,Frank N(if you can develop him into something special),this years pick and one more reasonable pick and add at least allstar level free agents to round out the rest.
If they were dead set on doing something this season they would be better off maxing out D.J,Capella or Decent center(Cousins if you believe he will return to at least 90%) and keeping their pick and drafting best available than going after Gordon. Well that is unless you can convince K.P to somehow play Center full time that is..
