ChoppyParticipantWith the search apparently down to two, Dwayne Casey and John Beilein, who do you think they should go for? Casey’ track record speaks for itself, but I don’t know much really about Beilein, other than he’s a very successful college coach. Could he be successful in the NBA?
What are your thoughts? Who should Detroit hire? I honestly don’t know who I’d prefer.

r377ParticipantIve always wanted Bill Laimbeer. Great IQ and mentally tough for Drummond.
Has won WNBA championship so i dont’ know why he is never mentioned ?
Whoever the coach is, the roster is all capped out for the next few years so you got Reggie Jackson, Griffin and Drummond

Andv1 WaitingParticipantIf you want playoffs/established coach: Casey.
If you want rebuild: College coach.
Simple as that…
Me personally if I was Detroit hit reset on that roster the only thing I would maybe keep-Drummond or maybe one of Kennard or Johnson as they are young enough to be a vet come the end of the rebuild.

cohenbc1ParticipantI’m honestly surprised that Casey wants to take over this roster … he’s the reigning coach of the year, a contender will knock on his door eventually.
Maybe he’s intrigued by the fact that they went 27-18 with Reggie Jackson in the lineup.

ZouldiersParticipantThey should go with Casey. There’s really nothing else they could do with that roster so just try and make the playoffs. They can’t outtank anyone anyways so might as well just try to win unless they could move Griffin and Jackson that is.

cohenbc1ParticipantAn honest question if anyone has thoughts/knowledge … how hard of a sell is Detroit for top free agents, not because of the current team but because of the city’s reputation, the weather, etc?
I mean, say they hire Casey, Griffin/Drummond/Jackson all stay healthy and they win like 48 games. Unlikely but I can imagine it happening. Could the Pistons then realistically compete for all-star free agents that could turn them into contenders?
If the answer is yes I’d say hire Casey and go for it. If the dirty little secret, known to management, is that no one wants to play for/live in Detroit, I might start thinking about how to blow it up.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantNeither really inspires me that much to tell the truth. I’ve always admired beilein and believe he is one of the best coaches in the NCAA but he is in his 60s and is a lifelong college coach with no professional experience on his resume of any kind. He just really strikes me as a guy that is much more cut out for the college game.
Casey turned around the raptors and always got the most out of his teams in Toronto in the regular season (playoffs are another story). But is he legitimately a step up from Van Gundy? Idk. Plus I kind of have to question where his energy level will be after what happened in Toronto last season. He might benefit from taking some time away from the game instead of rushing into another job. And he has already proven to be a rather lackluster playoff coach for a team that undoubtedly will have playoff aspirations.
I think they should continue to search to be honest, but if they’re dead set on hiring one of these guys I’d go with Casey.

OhCanada-ParticipantI read these reports on hoopshype and I cant lie even know I knew the odds of this were impossible I was hoping I would see a "Dwayne Casey interveiwed by Toronto Raptors" rumour. Shouldnt have fired him.
It shouldnt matter who is on the current roster Casey is the team.

HitsterParticipantThe Pistons have a lot of money tied to salaries over the next few years and have one of the best frontcourts out East. Blake Griffin seemed to be a perfect fit alongside Drummond and his passing and shooting range seemed to compliment Drummond’s game well.
Throw in Jackson and they have a decent core to build around.
Casey is certainly deserving of another decent role and the chance to coach Griffin and Drummond would appeal to him.
John Beilein is a top college coach and may fancy a crack at the NBA. But as he’s 65 years old, he’d not want it to be a rebuilding job and could ask for full control of the team how SVG had.
Casey might also push for total autonomy and a lot about who gets the coaching role could depend whether they put new Team President or GM in situ first or how these 3 roles are split.
If Detroit wanted to hedge their bets maybe give Casey or Beilein a joint role and appoint a top young assistant coach, so if the team did have to go into rebuild then Casey or Beilein could move upstairs and the young assistant becomes HC but team still has Casey or Beilein’s knowledge on hand.
