I think Toronto is quietly doing a rebuild. Thing about a rebuild is with some exceptions you cant just come out and announce "time for a rebuild!". Teams wont trade with you or will drive down your players trade value, fans interest will waiver and the league doesnt particularly appreciate it. But I do think thats whats going on here.

First thing they do is fire Dwayne Casey. DC is a people person and had strong relationships with his players so there is no way Raps could trade all his guys and have that be okay. He truly believes in the current roster which is why he had to go.

They will bring someone in they believe in with low expectations. Jerry Stackhouse. They will try it out for a year with the current roster and after failing another year they will try to sell high on Valanciunas, Ibaka, Lowry and Derozan. Ujiri has always gotten the most value out of his trade chips and this is where he truly shines as a GM.

I agree they are about to rebuild, but I think it is this offseason they trade away their core. Lowry, DeRozan, and Valanciunas are there three best trade pieces, but if you wait  year, there value drops tremendously. In a year, any team acquiring them would only have them for one year before they can hit free agency, so that hurts their trade value in the summer of 2019. I think Uijiri has determined this group has hit its ceiling and he would rather sell early than late, so I think this offseason he moves one to three of his best assets and starts to process of acquiring assets to build a new, younger core.

Firing Dwayne Casey as your 1st step to a Rebuild is Plain Stupid.

Kyle Lowry should have never gotten that huge contract being the age he is and is gonna be when that contract is over. Just as bar as Mike Conley’s huge contract with the Grizzles.

Last off season when they re made their bench getting rid of Guys like Patterson and Joseph in favor for the younger guys I was one of the guys who was all for it.  But JV should have gone around the same time in favor of Poetl.

The Raptors only hope is if Derozen takes another step and improves as a Combo guard and 3pt Shooter but when your the leader of a Franchise you can’t contantly bow down to LeBron when it comes down to cruch time.

Nobody really wants to be in Toronto anyway. You guys are like Orlando but accrooss the border. Draft decently but can’t really make any noise and end up losing your star player and repeating the cycle.

The Raptors only gave Lowry and Ibaka 3 year deals last summer when they may have been looking for 4 or 5 so the cap isn’t crippled for too many years.

Jonas’s future will be the first big thing to decide, he is 25 and seems to have reached his plateau. Any renewal for him is going to be north of $20 million a year and so do they risk letting him walk or try to cash in on him as they have Poeltl potentially ready to take over.

Despite not having a great play off series DeRozan still remains their biggest asset, he turns 29 this summer but is locked down for 3 years at a flat $27.739 million per year. For a guy of his scoring and with salaries going ever upwards, he isn’t on a bad deal. But would the Raps get the sort of assets they’d want to rebuild.

ESPN put up some interesting DeRozan trade ideas, the slightly amusing one was one built around Kawhi for DeRozan. If Kawhi wants out, the Spurs get DeRozan a proven scorer in return and Popps could work to improve him and Toronto get Kawhi who is a proven play off big game guy. Plus if Kawhi moved on the Raps have saved a ton of cash on DeRozan’s deal. The thought of Popps dumping Kawhi across the border at least for a year made me smile.

Why hate on the Raps, they were the second or third best team in the east.

Lots of teams "rebuild" but never get to where the Raps are now.  They just need one or two tweaks.

Go and ask Atlanta what its like to make a long run of playoff appearances, then to have to go through the long and painful process of a rebuild.

    They just won 59 games

The second or 3rd best team in the East?? If I didn’t know any better the Pacers are alot more talented with a Higher ceiling then the raptors. You telling me you win 59 games and then getting swept in the playoffs is ok??

They needed 1 or 2 more pieces when they had Chris Bosh in his prime. The same could be said when they had Vince carter

Atlanta deceided to let everyone from that season walk in free agency . That’s their fault.

They just won 59 games. But don’t act like what we saw in crunch time don’t matter tho

Yeah the core belief of the entire team was noticeable. All the leaders knew they would lose to Lebron and were intimidated. Lowry, Derozan, Ibaka, Valanciunas were all shook. That belief has gotta go in my opinion cant have any of that in your organization. Especially if you believe in Anunoby, Siakam, Poeltl, Wright, Van Vleet.

I actually think Lowry is worth keeping around. In Game 3 of the Cleveland series, when DeRozan disappeared, he kept the Raptors in the game. And in general, I think he gives the team some necessary grit and versatility in the backcourt. He’s just not someone you can build a team around. But unlike DeRozan, he can impact the game without scoring.

I think you’re right about DeRozan needing to go, though. DeRozan is a one-dimensional player who is virtually useless if he can’t find his shot. I think he can be a good second option on a team, but he’s not a leader. If you combined Lowry’s intangibles with DeRozan’s natural talent, you’d have a franchise player.
