I think Ive already made this thread but I couldnt find it and with Lauri Markannen on the scene I thought it was necassary. Ill try to keep it short.

Every white European 7-footer with range gets compared to Dirk nowadays. Heres the thing. Dirk wasnt a three-point shooter. Calling Dirk a three-point shooter is like calling Kobe or McGrady three-point shooters. He could shoot the three but his bread and butter was the mid range game. Throughout his career about 60% of hhis shots came from the midrange. That high arcing fadeaway in every post up situation became unstoppable to a point where once Nowitzki got to his spots he was gonna make or miss it but you wouldnt stop it.

Lets look at some of the players compared to him.

    Kristaps Porzingis

I dont see how he even getscomparedt to Dirk really. He is listed as three inches taller and much longer. He plays much more active and is more physical. Much more athletic and relies on his athletisism defensively and also offensively when his shot doesnt fall. Cannot shoot off balance whenever he does he goes into shooting slumps. Nowitzki mastered the off balance midrange game which is still duplicated by pretty much everyone that plays basketball. Porzingis takes 30% of his shots from the midrange compared to Nowitzkis career average of 60%. In Porzingis 2nd season he is taking 5.0 threes attempted per game. Nowitzkis career high for a season was 4.9 and his career average was 3.3. Stop comparing the dude to Nowitzki.

    Lauri Markannen

Markannen as much as I like him he projects as more of a niche starter. Like an invaluable role player and +/- stud. I doubt he becomes a 1st option of a team and a high volume shooter like Nowitzki but crazier things have happened. Just like Porzingis he is not nearly as effective from midrange as 40% of his shots come from three. Another thing is Nowitzki always setup on the right side of the court in the high post or coener three point line. Porzingis and Markannen usually set up at the top of the three point line straight ahead with the rim and utilize pick and rolls as the screener where as Nowitzki would use alot of screeners to establish high post position in the mid range. Its totally different. Night and day.

Bender was compared to Dirk as well and he seems more like an AK 47 type guy once he is finished developing.

Lauri’s defence and rebounding is more Bargnani.

I would compare him more to bargs, frank kaminsky and Brad Miller (who got posterized quite a bit)

For a long time every tall white player who could score the ball was compared to Larry bird (van Horn, dirk, even Adam Morrison, etc.). even though no of them really resembled bird’s all-around game at all.

For this new generation of young players that comparative template has shifted to Dirk.

I’ve watched a lot of Lauri this season-don’t sleep on him. He is way more than just a stretch 4. I’m a believer. I think he can be a guy you can build around. Has more of an NBA body as far as muscle and tone than  porzingis. I wouldn’t be surprised if he sneaks into the top 5

My opinion LaMacus Aldridge is the better example of a Dirk style player. Lauri is so bad on defense he makes Dirk like a first team all defense. He is a really bad defender from what I’ve seen. Porzingis the jury is still out on him for me, and I need to see more for me to make a judgement on him. He does look promising. I do like how he plays with a toughest.

With comparisons it is always quite hard to switch away from the race thing, a white guy is compared to a white player and a black guy to a black player. There is nothing wrong with this, it is just the way we think, we watch a black guy and try to think who his skillset is like so our sub conscious mind will push us towards a black player and vice versa.

Since Dirk teams have always been on the lookout for the next great shooting Euro big, Darko and Sitka spring to mind as the next great white hope.

As regards Dirk and LMA, I can see similarities in their game but LMA has never had the perimeter shooting range that Dirk had/has.

    Couple of things
-Dirk is kind of the benchmark of the stretch 4,he changed the game the way he played it. It is normal that players get compared to him. Comparisons will always happens
-Dirk was a gr8 3 point shooter,1st 7 footer to win 3Pt contest and average 40,50,90 IIRC. He will always be remembered for 3PT shooting as much as his 1 leg fade away.
-Dirk IMHO was more athletic than Porzingis at same age,not just leap but all aspect of athleticism.

What is it that makes people think Markannen is so terrible on defence? Is it his low steal/block averages? Is there any video or statistical evidence supporting this. I think hes a fine defender and while he may not be an elite defender he is at the very least average.

You must be talking about game 2 because the 1st game he shutdown Leaf. Game 2 I missed the second half. Either way you cant base it off of 1 game.

Watching him play today against Arizona St. and he is contesting everything at the rim. He has 3 blocks in 16 minutes as well. Im gonna stand by my previous comment. Hes a good defender.

I watched him against UCLA and also the highlights of Robert Willaims (who is overrated and not that good) scored easily against him in their matchup

          My thoughts on him:

          http://www.nbadraft.net/forum/lauri-markkanen

I agree with Warson, not every Euro that can shoot a 3 ball is the next Dirk or Zinga. Lauri is more likely to be in the Brad Miller, Kaminsky, Ryan Anderson category.

I can’t believe some user (obvi a biased Lauri fan) with a grand total of negative 14 points writes that he will go a top 3 pick and gets +12 !!! No way he goes top 3, I think he will struggle to crack the top 10 (although stretch 4/5 who can shoot the 3 ball is the current fad in the NBA now). Sabonis, Papgiannis and Korkmaz were all good international players – doesn’t mean they should of gone top 3 in the draft.

Bargnani – we may now laugh at Bargnani but he must have some skill and promise to be the no1 pick in the draft. He did average 21ppg one season in the NBA.
Actually Bargs wasn’t physical, didn’t really try too much on D and was a volume selfish shooter (cancer). Lauri is more of a teammate and not as selfish. I actually think his shooting % will be better than Bargnani. He may be a slighter better defender and rebounder than Bargs (not something really that difficult to achieve) prob more due to effort than anything.

          The Good –
At 7″ 230lbs, looks like he has hit the weights and has some muscle. He looks like he could get to 250lbs. Outstanding 3 point shooter. He looks disciplined and a good teammate. He isn’t a chucker and looks like he would work hard and listen to coaches at the next level

          The Bad –
Rebounding: he just doesn’t have the position or nose for the ball. I’ve seen him get outrebounded and bullied/pushed around by SG and SF. Defence – looks very robotic out there and sometimes looks lost. Doesn’t have good feel or intuition on defence. Guards can take it to the hoop and score on him. At 7ft tall he should be able to block shots or at least alter them or make them tougher. His defence is definitely such a concern his coach took him out on some defensive plays down the stretch – that has to tell you something…Footspeed, speed, athletic is below average. Inside game I dont’ know about since he camps at the 3 point line 90% of the time. The few times I did see him go inside it wasn’t good, mainly due to his lack of vert and athleticism.

          Pro outlook –
Currently ranked 10th on here and 7th on DX I think is a reach. He is not going to be the next Dirk, Zinga, KLove or Kiki Vandeweghe. I think he is going to be more of a Frank Kaminsky / Brad Miller type. He prob wont be a starter and more likely look at scoring 10-16ppg as a pro. If you take him at 3 or 5 you will regret it but would be worth the risk taking him 12-20 just for his sweet 3 point touch.

          Just my thoughts

Just to straighten this whole thing out for me, you are saying that Davis Bertans is NOT the next Dirk Nowitski…
