JNixonParticipantLet me start by saying, I tuned into this game because I wanted to watch the hype machine that is Anthony Randolph. My luck, he aint even play. Just horrible. But anyway…
The other Anthony, Anthony Morrow, had 20 of the first 26 points and made his first 7 shots from the field. Finished with the record, by getting 47 points. Beastin. He has an unbelievable jumper, hard to believe but its even better than it was when he was at Georgia Tech. He also has gotten alot stronger than back then, but he still needs more strength. He is an average athlete, and he didnt slash alot but he didnt need to because he was so hot shooting this game. He couldnt miss. He is nothing special defensively (who is for the Warriors?) but he is something special as a shooter/scorer. He should get more clock this year, and rightfully so. His shot is a true thing of beauty.
Stephen Curry played OK. He actually reminds me of a less athletic Jerryd Bayless with better passing skills. I had my doubts before, but he can easily play the PG. He is quick but he hardly ever tries to get to the rim. He uses his quickness to get free to shoot jumpers, which is good but he should slash more. Forces too many shots. He isnt a great ball handler for a combo guard, but he is good enough to get by. He doesnt look like a starter to me as of now, but he is a guy that should make noise and have a role as a rookie.
Acie Law played OK. He played off the ball this game for the most part, but he’s too small for that in a real game. He did play more intense than usual, and looked to play good. I guess he did to an extent. He’s noticeably stronger than he used to be He isnt a player that should get alot of time for them though. Maybe a mop-up player. He isnt very good at anything in particular.
Jamareo Davidson is too weak to play in the NBA right now. He has decent tools on offense including 3 pt range on his jumper, but he gets backed down in post defense and once he got pushed completely under the goal for a rebound by Earl Barron. Eat your veggies kids.
New Orleans:
A little guy named Earl Calloway play the best of anyone on their squad. I had no idea he made a summer league team. He didnt seem like an NBA prospect when he played for Indiana Univ. to me at all, guess he was. Well he is very quick and explosive and gets into the lane at will almost, he just doesnt finish that good. He also has a good enough jumper to get it done. But he is weak defensively,he would be a post up magnet in the NBA or he would just get shot over. He isnt a true NBA player, but he could be a great player overseas.
Darren Collison isnt playing good. He was so ineffective, they decided to let Julian Wright play the point. He is still quick and explosive, and he get into the lane the same way, but he isnt a good enough finisher. Not that good a shooter. Needs to get stronger. He is a tenacious defender though, he really gives you hell trying to move the ball up the court. He is a backup PG at best, he could be a solid change of pace to Chris Paul if he can make more open jumper.
Marcus Thornton played OK. He has a strong build though and can absorb contact. He reminds me of Willie Green for the 76ers. They both have similar builds and can be explosive scorers. He has a pretty good jumper, and he is a decent athlete as well. He isnt a great defender. He needs to work on his ball handling, he loses control after 2 or 3 dribbles alot. He has the potential to come off the bench an provide explosive scoring from time to time.
Julian Wright is a poor offensive player except for a few skills. He cant seem to get to the basket even though he is a good handler and has a good 1st step and he cant shoot at all When he did get to the basket, he missed a dunk with a clear lane. Hmmm…He is a decent passer and handler like I mentioned though, so he plays the role of point-forward alot. He is a good defender too and does good denying penetration and backdoors. He is at a crossroads as a player, in this 3rd year still playing summer league ball, but I think he could play a Boris Diaw role if he played for the Knicks or Suns. Isnt going to factor with the Hornets though, they dont know how to use him.
Luke Nevill is too slow and weak and soft to play in the NBA. Tisk tisk.
Earl Barron has good size, but little talent. A D-League kinda guy.

JNixonParticipantYea, they shouldve waited til the 2nd round and picked up Patty Mills. Collison isnt worth that 1st round pick.

gatorheelsParticipantMarcus Thornton is a SG & a good one too. I agree though about Collison, the Hornets could’ve picked a better player at #21. I do think he is a very solid backup for Paul though.
Julian Wright is a staright up bust. I didn’t watch this game but the last summer league game I saw he looked terrible. He has shown me nothing since he has been in the nba.
The Warriors have a lot of talented players. I keep telling people they are going to make the playoffs this year.

JNixonParticipantThe Warriors have offensive options all the way down their roster..they will be fun to watch. They will have to defend sometimes though, but they have more than enough offense. And Julian Wright just needs a change of scenery, and to be locked in a gym shooting jumpers. And when he leaves there he should be locked in a local weight room.

JNixonParticipantAntwan Jamison was a true beast when he played for Golden State in like 2001, I remember. They have had some of the better players in the game, but they always trade them away.

sheltwon3ParticipantAlso a lot of time we say a player sucks but then it is mostly you have talently player that is stuck on a team that does not know how to use him and they are scared that if they trade him to early everyone will know that they dont know how to use some players. This happens to Hornets but it happens to the Grizz a lot.

JNixonParticipantThey havent made any decisions to take them to a higher level. Through free agency or the draft, but it could happen later. They just would have to hurry. And thats very true, Julian Wright is only one example. There have been guys that just arent right for a system for whatever reason and go to another team and play well. Jermaine O’Neal is a classic example, but its truly not always the player I agree.

gatorheelsParticipantI don’t think that was dump. Warriors are trying to build young talent. I would take Brandon Wright over Richardson everytime. Richardson wasn’t going to help them win a title so they might as well get a wealth of young talent. Look what Richardson has done for Phoenix…nothing special.

llperezhe is a victim of his own contract. Making 12 mill per, people are gonna pick him apart. He is actually very solid, and anyone who thinks Brendan Wright is equal value is crazy.

gatorheelsParticipantWhy do the Warriors need Richardson when they already have Curry, Ellis, Belinelli, Morrow, Jackson, Maggette, etc?… Brandon Wright has a lot of skills…he is still young & hasn’t got a chance to show it yet.
I’m not saying Richardson isn’t a good player I am just saying I would rather gamble in taking a player like Wright. Wright showed a lot of promise last season.

llperezI’m not a big JRich fan. But plain and simple he has dropped 20 a game for GState, Charlotte, and Phoenix. Wright has gotten very minimal playing time because he is not ready. Go back to his one year in college and watch Taj Gibson destroy him in the sweet 16. Dude just ain’t that good.

Scoring 20ppg doesn’t mean you are having a positive impact on that game. In that minimal playing time Wright did get last year he was pretty effective. I think he is a solid player. It just depends on what skills you think your team needs. In the Warriors case I think they are better off with Wright.
Wright should definitely be playing in summer league though.

llperezthe warriors got rid of Rich, I thought it was smart because he was overpaid. I don’t think they necessarily got better by trading him, but they saved some money. But then they turned around and gave the same ridiculous contract to Corey “I’ve never passed up a shot” Maggette. Wright might develop into a solid player, but when?
And yes, Gibson did destroy him in the sweet 16 a couple years ago. The Trojans were up by like 15 in the second half, and Gibson fouled out, and UNC came back and won by like 10. Gibson was dominating the game, and as soon as he fouled out, UNC went on something like a 40-10 run to finish the game. I was very unimpressed by Wright since he did nothing until Gibson fouled out.

gatorheelsParticipantHaha I agree 100% about Maggette… that was a stupid move His contract is awful. The Warriors have a lot of talent but they need to make some trades.
I think Wright is already a good player he just needs more playing time. He is stuck in a bad situation because Golden State has Randolph. If the Warriors could trade Jackson & Maggette they could slide Randolph to SF & Wright to PF.

JNixonParticipantI remember when Gibson destroyed Wright too. The game were USC lost because Gibson got in foul trouble. Yea Gibson was punishing Wright down low that game. And Taj Gibson is all of 205 lbs. At 6 10.
