HitsterParticipantWith all the talk about the Knicks wanting to move Melo on and him having a no trade clause, I wondered with all these buy outs going down might the Knicks look to buy out Melo. Of course he has $54 million due over the next two seasons if we assume he’ll opt in for 2018-19. But Deron Williams was brought out from the remaining 2 years of his Nets contract in 2015 and that was worth over $40 million although he may have taken less money to secure a buyout.
The thing that made we consider a possible buyout for Melo is the stretch provision whereby I believe a team can stretch the remaining years on a contract by double the amount of years plus 1 in regard to the salary cap.
So a 1 year remaining deal could be stretched over 3 years, D-Will’s 2 years was stretched to 5 years on the Nets cap and Melo’s 2 years could be stretched to 5 years two. The Knicks would have Melo’s salary on the cap at just under $11 million for 5 years. That may hinder longer term cap space but it would give them $15 million extra cap space this summer and similar in 2018, if they wanted to rebuild.
I know that $54 million or a figure agreed close to that would be a lot to pay but the Knicks are a very rich team and could easily afford it. This would give them a chance to move on and Melo pushing 33 would have the freedom to try and get on a legit contender whilst he is still playing at a decent level. With his buyout, he’d have the chance to take a lesser deal and become a more viable option for some teams.
We know Melo loves NY and Dolan is a big fan of his but if this option was offered do you think it would be worth all sides considerring it.

joe2324ParticipantMelo isn’t going anywhere, he is staying put to piss Phil Jackson off. I think he’s content with never winning a title and he knows how bad Phil wants to move on and rebuild. We’ve lost some potential draft picks over the years due to acquiring Melo and it has not benefited the team at all. Consider Melo deadweight and we’re just going to have to deal with it until his contract is up. As great as he is offensively, maybe top 50 all time, he is god awful on defense and brings nothing to table. The difference between Wade/Lebron and Melo is HUGE. Both Wade and Lebron have always played hard on defense and it shows. Melo could care less about defense.

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantHarsh words for Melo you have there, care to remind us about how great the team was before he got there?

thetrademachineryParticipantwhy do you buyout carmelo? He has decent value if he ever accepts a trade.
They still cant win with him, there is no youngsters playing in his position for the team so there is no point in buying him out.

The GoatParticipantHere’s the question to ask – will Porzingis have a better career than Dirk? He certainly has the potential, but Dirk has set a very high bar. You would have to think at this point the answer is no, which is no knock on Porzingis, just has to be said Dirk has had a great career. Remember Dirk has won one title.
With this in mind, do you think, with the current state of the New York Knicks that Porzingis, with Carmelo Anthony as his support, is going to win a championship? Only a diehard Melo fan would say yes and believe it. I would say New York currently has far less a chance than the Bucks, Philly or even the Timberwolves at this point, and those teams aren’t even in the playoff picture. So, what do you do? Melo has to go.

joe2324ParticipantKP def has the potential to be special, but there needs to be patience, hes in his early 20s and has a lot of room to grow.

HitsterParticipantThanks for the feedback.
As far as Porz goes, I don’t know if he can ever be such a great scorer as Dirk has been but he is still an elite prospect with his size and shooting range.
