Kings win on this trade and reestablish a future for thier team. Great job by Vlade Divac here. The tank job officially begins but would you rather it starts in 2020?

    New Orleans Pelicans

    Draft Grade= B-

    DeMarcus Cousins

    Sacramento Kings

    Draft Grade=B+

Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, 2017 1st, and 2nd round pick

    COUSINS

Pelicans-This grade seems bad but considering the team has done at best a C job building the team since drafting Anthony Davis it was the right move to acquire Cousins. The problem is the Pelicans as of now are super thin especially im the backcourt but this can be solved in the Summer. They are also injury prone. Alot of people seem to think they win the 8th seed in the west over Denver, Portland, Dallas and Minnesota. I just don’t see it but crazier things have happened and I really think Etwaun Moore is going to be stepping up in this situation. Solomon Hill is also a guy that starts to play better towards the end of the season and had a great shooting game before the break.

    PG-Holiday, Frazier

    SG-Moore,

    SF-Hill, Cunningham

    PF-Davis, Jones

    C-Cousins, Aijinca, Asik , Diallo

Arguably the most talented big man in the league and amongst the greatest I’ve ever watched he lacks in the professionalism department. I challenge you to find one youtube video with Cousins being interviewed within the last year where he doesn’t sound stupid. The pairing with Davis will also have its issues as they do have similar offenaive games although I’m almosy positive Davis will be willing to differ to Cousins and Gentry will do his best to establish order.

Kings-The Kings won this trade as well. They essentially gained two 1st round draft picks by making this deal. Most people still don’t understand the 76ers only own the right to SWAP picks with them this year. So if they are better than the 76ers Philly can choose to swap picks. Here’s the thing they also owe Chicago. If the pick is in between 10th and 30th the pick goes to Chicago. So they needed to tank to get this pick and hope Philly also finishes lower than 10th in case they decide to swap. Also they have no 2019th pick. So let’s say they kept Cousins and all trends remained the same. What would 2019 look like with no pick? Cousins  cannot attract free agents to Sacramento. Noone can. The rebuild had to happen because the team was not getting better internally with Boogies leadership or externally because nobody wants to play there and they had no picks. Now they have cap space, potential to sign free agents, draft picks, and a cloud of darkness that has been over there heads is gone. The only thing is I do agree they likely could have gotten more. What would Danny Ainge, Masai Ujiri, Sam Hinkle have gotten dangling around Cousins?

PELICANS 2017 1ST ROUND DRAFT PICK

Let’s find out the value of this pick by looking at the current standings, current mock draft, and the projected place the Kings will be selecting. Alot of people are predicting the Pelicans will now be the 8th seed which would make this pick the 16th pick at worst.

    Current standings

    14-CHI 28-29

    15-DET 27-30

    16-MIL 25-30

    17-DEN 25-31

    18-MIA 25-32

    19-CHA 24-32

    *20-SAC 24-33*

    21-POR 23-33

    *22-NO 23-34*

    23-NY 23-34

    24-DAL 22-34

    25-MIN 22-35

    26-PHI 21-35

    27-ORL 21-37

Judging by this we can expect the pick to land anywhere from 6th to 16th. This will likely be a late lottery pick 11th to 14th.

This draft is very good but inbetween the 10th to 20th picks most of the talent is big men. The Kings already have three talented big men. Skal a stretch 4. WCS an athletic defender. Pappa an old school big. The Kings will likely be hoping they can select someone like Jayson Tatum, Miles Bridges or DeAaron Fox in this range. That plus their own pick which will likely be 5th to 10th will net them twould very good prospects to rebuild with along with thier collection of young players and 2018 draft pick.

    HIELD

Pelicans-Although Hield does show potential he did not come in and immediately show he can be a game changer. That was the expectation and why they took him ahead of the younger Jamaal Murray. Although his college progression showed once he figures out this level of competition his shooting ability can be quite coveted and valuable.

Kings-For Sacramento he was the best young player available. He joins Malachi Richardson and Ben Mcclemore to form a group of talented young wings. Similar to thier young talent in the frontcourt. Sounds good except for the fact that the Kings have 4 veterans on contract that play the wing that are or are partially extended until the summer of 2018. Coach Joeger is good at his job and will be trying ti win, likely with vets. He doesnt seem like the type to lay down and die. Here’s the players and thier contract information for next year.

*all players are unrestricted free agents for 18-19*

Rudy Gay-player option-$14,000,000 (out for the rest of this season )

    Matt Barnes-player option-$6,400,000

    Aaron Afflalo-$12,000,000

    Garrett Temple-$8,000,000

    EVANS

Pelicans-Evans was an unrestricted free agent at the end if the year and was leaving and/or going to be shown his way out. Failed  experiment in New Orleans and one of many. Trading him is a formality of matching contracts and avoiding a Boogie/FreakyReke reunion.

Kings-I actually expect to see the Kings let him sit for the rest kf the year. Or come up with a fake injury for him. They need to tank badly.

For all those people that can’t,  won’t or refuse to read this (I wouldn’t even proof read it) here it is summed up.

Kings had to make this trade. Nobody was coming through free agency. They are at thier cap. They have no 2019 1st round pick which means if the Cousins extension didn’t work out they are left with nothing but a dying franchise. They essentially gained this year’s top 10 pick a late lottery pick from the Pelicans and a potentially very high 2018 pick in next year’s draft as apposed to 8th to 12th place finishes until Cousins demands a trade with his new big contract and completely destroys his trade value.

The Kings basically backed themselves into a corner, and then pulled the trigger on a subpar deal. Before the season started the Lakers were willing to trade 2 or three of their key young prospects and their 1st round pick for Cousins. Sac didn’t pull the trigger, proceeded to back themseves into a corner, and played themselves with a so so trade for the best big in the league smh…

But due to Sac recent draft history I don’t think this is a good trade. They basically trade, let walk or didn’t give an opportunity to all of their draft picks.

I’d be careful giving any credit to Vlade.

The lakers deal was clearly superior and as a result, the kings have a shot at #1

WHICH WILL CONVEY TO THE SIXERS!!!!!

I honestly can see both side. Boogie was a problem child that finally got cut off. Sac must be thinking hey he’s not our problem anymore.

This is put up or shut up time for Cousins. Which could be great or very bad. I’m of the opinion that both teams win. Sac needed to get rid of him. (Divac probably hoping he sabotages NO)

the west being dominated by the warriors small ball…I do think this is how you counter it. Two bigs that can do everything.

Sacramento loses this trade everytime because they got 50 cents on the dollar at best. I find it hard to believe they couldn’t have gotten a better deal than this. I’ve been saying they needed to trade him and blow it up so it’s good they finally did it, but it really felt like they rushed it.

New Orleans deserves no less than an A for this. Any team can get role players like Buddy and Tyreke, the hardest thing is to get stars. Now they have 2 established superstars and possibly the guys best at their position in the league. Yeah their backcourt is slim but they can fix that in the offseason or by maybe moving Terrence Jones; they’re not expecting to win a championship this year anyway so it’s definitely not something you can knock them for after the trade

I don’t think they could have gotten more value after looking into it further. If this works out they essentially gain back thier own Top 10 pick, get a late lottery to mid 1st, and Buddy Hield.

Toronto and Boston obviously didn’t want to sacral ice what they built.

      Portland was not offering Mccollum.

Where do they turn? Dallas? LA? Philly?

Teams didn’t want him. They got the most out of it.

Lets say they can draft either Smith/Ntilikina and Tatum/Bridges. Then next year they are in contention for Ayton/Porter. That plus Hield, Richardson, Mcclemore, WCS, Papa G and Skal is a much more promising future than keeping Cousins. People are talking about them relocating now, I actually think that this may have saved the franchise. Cousins as amazing as he is was killing this whole organization and now they clearly have a future.

Sacramento loses simply because they passed on so many much better offers, New Orleans wins because nobody thought anyone could get Cousins this cheap.

Regardless of whether the Pelicans make the playoffs, this trades really sets them up for next year, they’ll have some salary space and will be a very appealing destinations for guards who want to try to win a championship. They’ve went from a team that was seemingly going nowhere to a team that might be very good very soon.

I didn’t know Omri Casspi was included in this deal. That’s actually a huge piece for the Pelicans playoff push.

The pairing of Davis and cousins could be awkward at first. Both are used to be the unquestioned focal point and having the offense run through them. They are both extremely talented and should figure things out but it might not happen overnight.   If Davis doesn’t have quite as much burden on offense, maybe he can focus more of his attention on the defensive end of the floor and really become the defensive force he was projected to be coming out of college but has only really shown glimpses so far in the NBA.

Hopefully, boogie’s attitude will improve if he sees he has the chance to be part of a winning environment and potentially something special. I can already see the potential for distractions with him in New Orleans and how that could be a cause for concern. We’ll just have to see how this plays out. This is still an excellent deal for new Orleans I think. It signals that they are serious about contending now and will aren’t afraid to shake things up to do it. Players of cousins caliber just aren’t available very often and it seems likely that they could be in position to acquire another big name player in free agency in the future.

People are bashing Sacramento for this deal, but I think that they had to trade cousins and the longer they waited the less they would have been likely to get in return. It wouldn’t make sense to max cousins out. They are not going anywhere with him and it would be impossible to really rebuild with him on the roster. Now they can move on from the cousins era and really focus on building the roster. You can argue about whether the timing was right or they could have gotten more in return, but I really don’t think you could argue that trading cousins wasn’t the logical decision. Ultimately, this trade will be judged in time by the unknown pick and how good of a player hield becomes.

You have to remember that a lot of times trades aren’t necessarily to help the team at the present time but more so in the future. While it looks on paper like the pelicans fleeced Sacramento in this deal, you probably won’t actually be able to judge it for at least five years. People hammered the grizzlies for trading gasol for pennies on the dollar in 2008, but in retrospect it actually turned out to be an excellent deal for them and helped lay the groundwork for the sustained period of success they have had over the past 6-7 seasons.

We don’t know what other deals were on the table, if Boston had wanted to do something then they would have done so as far back as last summer I reckon when they had 3rd pick. Toronto too had picks available and would probably have moved by now if they had wanted to.

It seemed as if the deal was almost rushed, unless NOP said it was only on the table for a certain amount of time. I’d have thought Sac-Town might have waited to see if any of the big money franchises had joined the bidding war.

Also I’d have wanted less protection on this year’s pick and another possible future first rounder too.

Sixers are huge winners of this trade because the right to swap picks is Philly and with Cousins gone and Gay hurt the Kings are gonna plummet.

If the Kings  win the lottery the Sixers can and would elect to switch picks.

Plus the Sixers own the Kings 2019 first round pick unprotected.

So Sam Hinkie won this trade

New Orleans has more or less been set up to get Davis numbers, and while it has given them a headline "STAR!" it hasn’t given them wins. For seven years, we have seen Cousins show himself to be a dominant offensive big man with possibly the best skill set of all the young centers in the game, but he regularly loses games by being a pouty head case who has minimal attention to detail and sporadic interest in helping his team get stops. By virtue of them coming together, the numbers and opportunities for both are going to drop. Statisically speaking, Terrence Jones has been really productive when starting, and they seemed to give that an extended run over the past month. I wonder if New Orleans can get someone to buy into that 17-7 as a starter and find a taker before the deadline. Here is what will be interesting, you are putting two stat monsters who never won anything together with a healthy Jrue Holiday factoring in as well. For this season, with minimal practice opportunities to figure one another out, how much better offensively are they going to be with Davis, Holiday, Cousins, Moore (figuring to get more minutes now), and the wing pu pu platter than they were lately with Davis, Jones (15 PPG on 49 % from the field and 1.6 offensive rebounds per over the past month), the myriad of 2s and 3s, and a healthy Holiday who was statisically playing about as well as ever (they are 21-21 with him)? I don’t know if it is enough to move the needle much beyond the .500 team they have been since Holiday came back and they settled on a rotation.

As for the Kings, it was seven years. It never worked. Five coaches were fired. Two GMs were fired. It is ok to decide to change it up. As talented as Cousins is, he wasn’t going to take them to a title. Committing another half decade to a project that has accomplished nothing to date would not have made sense.

Nice analysis but the Kings will keep the pick even if Philly falls out of top 10, Philly can just swap

Chicago owns Sac’s pick if it falls between 10-30 even if its the pick swap with philly. Only way they keep the pick is if Kings and Sixers fall within the top 10.

I understand what your suggesting now. I wonder which one is correct. I think this has been brought up and settled before that after the swap the pick would go to Chicago but it would be nice to have an expert double check.
