The Knicks are learning that the market value for Melo is weak.  They have been shopping him for a while now, and it tuens out that teams don’t want to give up their marquee players for him.  He’s just not good enough to warrant that kind of consideration.

Melo’s contract also makes him a hard trade because he is one of three NBA players with a true no-trade clause allowing him to veto any trade that he does not like.  Eseentially this limits the trade options to title-contending teams like the Clips because we can assume that the only way Melo would OK a trade is if it was to a winning team with a real chance to win a ring.  He is not going to OK a trade to the Bucks, or the Hornets, or some other random team.

There is also the fact that his salary is 25+ milli per year for 3 more years (2 + 1 player option).  And a clause in his contract bumps his pay to 28+ milli if he is traded.  So any team taking him is going to have to get creative with the cap, or pay a whopping salary tax.

The Knicks now are offering up Melo and have made it clear that they will ship him without getting an equivalent "superstar" in return.  The Clips look look like a possisble landing spot for Melo, which would be sweet for them because they would only have to give up Redick and a couple of guys from the end of the bench.

I knew this would happen with Melo if the Knicks ever soured on him.  I am just surprised that Phil Jackson, and the New York media has turned on him so quickly.  It seems like only within the last 3 months that Melo has gone from the franchise savior/future, to an old (33 yo) has-been, who plays no defense, and slows the flow of the offense by stopping and holding the ball too often.  It’s kind of ridiculous that a franchise that has sucked since the ’90s is blaming Melo for not winning a championship.

What do you guys think Melo should do?  I think that he should veto every trade, and play out his contract.  He should meet with management and tell them that, and tell them to stop trying to ship him.  If he has already done that, and Jackson is still shopping him then I would do what I could to get traded to the Clips.  He would not be expected to be the man there, and would actually have a chance for a nice playoff run.  He won’t win a chip with them, but he could live in sunny southern california, get a nice pay raise, and not be blamed for every loss the team has.

Melo should just veto every trade and play out his contract to spite Phil. I believe this can be a playoff team next year.

I think it helps both Melo and Phil, if Melo is traded to the Clippers. Melo is one of my favorite players so it’s sad to see him suffering in NY.  He’s gonna get his money whether he’s traded or not, so I’d rather him do it on a winning team. The Knicks are going nowhere if they keep Melo. They’re not good enough to make the playoffs and not bad enough to get an instant impact player as of now.  They need to trade Melo and start over.  If they get Redick in return and maybe some future picks, that’d be perfect because Redick would fit well with Porzingas and whoever they draft because he’s a great shooter and respectable defender.

Melo would benefit because he stays in a big market, gets to play for a playoff team, and gets to play with one of his good friends in CP3. While I think this trade would do nothing to help the outlook of a possible playoff matchup between the Clippers and Warriors, it would make the Clippers a bit more entertaining.  However, if I’m the Clippers I don’t make this trade. If they pull the trigger, I can easily see this situation turning into the Nets-Celtics situation where the Nets got big names by giving up future draft picks and it backfired horribly.

The Clips don’t have any 1st round picks for the rest of the decade I believe.

Melo has no trade value.  No team wants a ball-stopping, no defending volume scorer in his 30’s who doesn’t make anyone on his team better,

It all comes down to know you are taking a loss on the trade initially if you are the Knicks, as this move is either a salary dumping one or trading Mello away so you can start the rebuild around Porzingas with players that suit him better due to freeing up about 13 million worth of cap..

My guess is it turns into something like this and probably has to be a 3 team deal:

To the Knicks: J.J,Tyreeke evans and Austin Rivers-The only longterm deal of the whole lot is rivers at 11 mill per over 2 more seasons after this one..The rest you can either Re-up or let go and clear some cap room and getting better fits/needs.

To the clippers: Mello the only issue with this move for the Clippers is maybe the floor spacing shrinks a little with the loss of J.J and that they have no SG’s after this move..

To New orleans: Jamal Crawford. who have a guard that can help the bench scoring out and is locked up for 2 more years also.(as apparently they don’t want him on the knicks due to salary)

This worked on the Trade Machine.  Something in it for everybody.  Plus, it’s just fun to do!

Lakers: get Jimmy Butler, give Jordan Clarkson and Jose Calderon

Bulls: get Blake Griffin, Jordan Clarkson, Brandon Jennings, Alan Anderson

Knicks: get Austin Rivers, Jamal Crawford, Jose Calderon

Clippers: get Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade

    Why?

Lakers make great trade for an all-star shooting guard.  Okay, okay, I am a Laker fan and they get the best of this trade!

Bulls make a major dump of the Wade/Butler experiment and get the all-pro in Grffin and promising 2-guard replacement in Clarkson under a very reasonable deal.  Jennings and Anderson on one-year deals will help clear cap room. Not a bad deal.

Knicks: at this point, don’t they have to move Melo for…like anything?  So getting an improving Rivers, expiring Calderon, and the aging, but still productive and tradeable Crawford allows both Phil and Melo to move on.

Clippers: get Anthony and Wade and combine with CP3 to beging the super team and stoke the conspiracy theory to have LBJ join them next year for the banana boat team!  Blake is sacrificed for the opportunity to put together the AARP super team, but they kinda win wthout Griffin anyhow when Paul is healthy, and plus, this is fun to speculate, and I’d like to see them go against the Warriors.

    Let the beatings begin!

That’s the idea!  But the Bulls don’t lose in it, do they?  It’s a firestorm there.  Knicks are the losers here, but I just thnk Phil would do take the hit to be rid of Melo.

To Philly for Okafor, Bayless and his contract, Robert Covington, some more contracts, Illasova, a 2017 second round pick, cash, and a future number one pick to the Knicks for Carmelo, Lance Thomas, and a future 2nd round pick.

Okafor and Porzingas would be a good combo inside, plus they get some draft picks. Robert Covington could be the small forward they need.

Philly makes a sleeper run at the playoffs with Simmons, Carmelo, Embiid, Saric, and Noel for a super size team with no starter shorter than 6’8.

No way the Sixers do that. Melo does not fit them. They give up their best wing defender (Covington) for a player who plays little to no D. A player who is to old to be any good when the team peaks and who’s contract would make it hard to re-sign their young star. Also they would have to change their whole offense to suit him.

      Not going to happen.

Okafor straight up is fair for Melo you know, anything more is a robbery.

Covington should be worth more than Melo right now, at least for Philly. He represents their team identity and is their second best active player behind Embiid on the season.

Also, no way Philly plays Ilyasova/Melo/Stauskas as starters, Melo has to be replacing Ilyasova if he were to come.Brett Brown is a defense first coach.

Melo’s age and contract make him a no go for the Sixers. Read on ESPN that he has a trade clause that gives him 15% raise if he gets traded. That puts him at 30m next year. No way the Sixers do that.

I was not arguing on should the sixers do it but more on Melo’s value.

You are right he is not a good investment for the sixers or any young team.

I don’t know if it is a good idea for the Clippers or not, but there are rumours they’re after him and that they’re just looking for a third team to try to get it done. I feel like Chicago could be that team as they need to shake things up and have players rumoured to be on the trade block (Rondo, Miroctic). So here it is:

NY trades Anthony for Rivers, Miroctic, Wes Johnson, Brice Johnson and probably a future first or second rounders from LAC.

LAC trades Crawford, Rivers, Wes Johnson, Moute, Brice Johnson and some picks for Anthony and Rondo.

CHI trades Rondo and Miroctic for Crawford and Moute.

After writing it out, I feel like Chicago needs to get a little bit more in return, but this is just the base trade.

I like Rondo going to the Clips as he’s back with Doc, can fill in for injured Paul and can throw some sweet dimes to Griffin and DJ.

Tristan Thompson for Melo actually works for both sides imo.

Tristan fits perfect next to Krista and Melo and Bron get to live out child hood fantasies.

Bron May Be The Only Person Who Can Grt Melo playing defense

The Knicks don’t need another bigman, Melo wouldn’t be a bad fit in Cleveland but I think that there isn’t much trades that can get the Knicks interested, but maybe, here me out, JR and Kevin Love for Melo and Courtney plus two first rounders, that is to me the only way that the Cavs would start to think without the Knicks throwing there life out there.
