Mr. HookShotParticipantLooking back at the start of this season there have been several exciting teams in the NBA that have been a pleasant surprise for the neutral spectator.
Milwaukee Bucks – Not only are they incredibly talented, but their young studs seem like down-to-earth guys that play the game the right way. Besides having one of the better coaches in this league in Jason Kidd (there, I’ve said it) and a seemingly endless stream of talented, multi-positional players (Parker, Middleton, Henson, Snell) they have a one-of-a-kind talent in Giannis Antetokounmpo. This guy can do it all: shooting the ball from the outside (a bit), posting up smaller guys, distributing the ball, and I love it when he goes coast-to-coast after grabbing the defensive rebound.
Charlotte Hornets – One of the surprise teams thus far, being 6 – 2 after 8 games. I’ve always liked Batum as one of the most versatile guys in the league, although he could be frustating at times as well. However, after are very solid season last year he proving again that he has become less volatile in this play. Besides Cody Zeller and MKG growing up and Belinelli providing a solid game, Kemba Walker has thus far led his team by example. He’s putting up close to 26 ppg – 6 apg, while shooting solid percentages from all over the floor. While he might be up for some regression, I really hope he can keep this up, as he’s a likeable guy for me with his work ethic and all-out-play.
Portland Trailblazers – As a team that has been pushing the pace all year (+5 possesions per game compared to last year), the Blazers have a talented roster all around. One guy that deserves mention here is Mason Plumlee, who is showing that he is one of the most prominent ‘modern’ frontcourt guys, dishing out assists at 4.3 per game. Still, this young team is build around maybe the most exiting backcourt in the NBA, with McCollum playing Robin next to Lillard’s role as Batman. And a ‘bad-man’ he is, as he is all over the floor dishing out assists, grabbing rebounds as a guard with the best of them, and doing his best Curry-impersonation with his incredible shooting ability. The main reason why I like Lillard as much as I do is that he seems like a genuine nice and relaxed guy off the court, but that on the court he could have to most confidence and swag of the entire league.

ZouldiersParticipantNo love for the Lakers man wow. They have been the most surprising and most exciting team this season. Luke Walton is a hell of a coach and should have won COTY last year. They have wins against teams like Atlanta, Houston and Golden State and are 6-4 right now because of it. They are young and surprisingly deep thanks to the bench play of Williams and Clarkson. Ingram and especially Nance Jr. are playing solid as well off the bench. Russell got ice in his veins and Nick got his swag back and Mozgov is doing some posters for a change.

ChoppyParticipantDid anyone predict the Lakers to make the Playoffs this year? Did anyone predict they’d even be close to .500? Not me, and I’d wager very few others. If Walton gets that roster to within sniffing distance of the playoffs I’d give him COY without hesitation.

D7H7NParticipantThe Lakers could’ve been decent last season but they had to let Kobe be Kobe and they had a bad coach.
