Jaymes BrownParticipantI think they lost a lot more than we realize with the retirement of Duncan.
Danny Green is an overrated defender, and Parker, Ginobli, and Gasol are non-entities on the defensive side. Then Aldridge is no difference maker either.
Rumor has it that Pau Gasol’s terrible defense and lackadasical attitude about it was a big point of division and resentment in the Bulls locker room last season.
I expect the Spurs to disappoint this year, and for their defensive ethos to fall apart quickly.

xJumpManxParticipantThey will have a dropoff after losing Duncan.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantThey should take a step back defensively after losing Duncan and diaw (who was underrated on that end as well). They could be better offensively with gasol in Duncan’s spot though. Green is a good defender but he was a disaster shooting the ball last season compared to previous years for some reason. I don’t expect him to be as bad this year.
Ultimately, we know what they will get from Leonard and Aldridge. How far they can go this year will depend largely on how much guys like Parker, gasol, and ginobilli have left in the tank and how much of a step forward some of their younger players like kyle Anderson can take. I definitely don’t see 67 wins happening again but 60 is still a possibility if things break right. These are the spurs after all and pop is still around.

MatosParticipantAgreed. People discredited Duncan’s ability to affect the game last year. He wasn’t a monster scorer and he didnt have the stamina he once had, but his IQ was still a big contributor to their success. Losing him and West was a big hit defensively and fundamentally for them.
Leonard will only get better but they need another defensive wing and some defensive front court talent as well. And with Tony Parker on the decline of his career, they’ll really need to find their PG successor (dont know if thats Murray or not) and develop him. Today’s NBA is a PG-lead league. It’s the most important position.
