Klay Thompson and Ray Allen are 2 SG’s that are interesting to compare and contrast. Ray Allen is undoubtedly a first ballot hall of famer (10 time All Star), and is widely recognized as one of the league’s top 5 shooters in history. His game was silky smooth. Then you have Klay Thompson, another assassin who in many circles is already considered a historically great shooter and excellent two-way player, after just 5 years in the league.

IMO Ray Allen was a little more well rounded on the offensive end his first 5 years compared to Klay. Plus he was a slightly better rebounder. Klay Thompson however is the superior defender between to two, capable of locking up the opposition’s best PG, SG and in some instances SF… while still dropping 20+ points on you. He can get hot in a hurry! This isn’t to say Ray Allen was a turnstill (he was still pretty good) it’s just that Klay’s elite on that side of the ball. Let’s take a deeper look at some more stats between the two during their first half-decade of NBA play:

    Ray Allen (1996-2001)

    • 18.8pts, 4.5rebs, 3.8assists, 1.2stls, 87%FT, 45%FG, 0.1Blks
    • 2 All Star Appearances
    • All NBA Third Team Selection — 2001
    • Scored 40+ points four times in 2000-2001 Season

    Klay Thompson (2011-Current)

    • 18.3pts, 3.3rebs, 2.4assists, 1.0stls, 86%FT, 45%FG, 0.5Blks
    • 2 All Star Appearances
    • All NBA Third Team Selection — 2015, 2016
    • NBA Record 37 points in a single quarter versus Sacramento Kings in 2015

As you can see both stack up pretty evenly on the stat sheet. So I’d be interested to hear if you all base your preference on advanced stats, overall team performance, basketball IQ, the ol’ eye test, or something different.

Tough call. It would have been interesting to see what a young ray Allen could do in a system like golden state’s, where he would be encouraged to shoot as much as possible. As you said, I’d probably give Allen the slight edge due to his more well-rounded offensive game. He was definitely better off the dribble and at creating shots for teammates at the same point in his career. Also, slightly less streaky and able to contribute in more ways even if his shot wasn’t falling imo. Thompson definitely gets the edge defensively though as noted.

Klay Thompson has never been the undisputed 1st option on offense like ray was either or his numbers would definitely be higher.  Sadly his numbers about to take another hit unless they bring another basketball to golden state along with kevin durant.

Allen wasn’t necessarily the undisputed first option in Milwaukee early in his career either. He had to contend with Glenn Robinson and Sam cassell for shots. It wasn’t until he got traded to Seattle and they designed the whole offense around his shooting that his game really took off.

Ray Allen and its not close to for me.. better at driving and more athletic with the Bucks. Smarter too. No disrespect to Klay though, hes been really good so far but the way he is so streaky as the 2nd option puts me off thinking he could be the man on an different team

That’s a good post man,  I’d say shooting wise it is extremely close.  Athletically, I don’t think it’s comparable.  People forget how athletic Ray Allen was in his younger days.  He was quick and he could dunk on you easily.  Klay Thompson is nowhere near the athlete Ray Ray was.  Klay also plays in a shooter friendly system obviously.  All those guys have the green light from 3.  I’d give the slight edge to Jesus Shuttlesworth because of his superior athleticism.

If Klay could have as good a career as Ray ended up with he’d be delighted. Klay is a great player and heaven knows how crazy his 3 point shooting stats would be without Steph Curry MVP as his main man. Personally I’d just shade Ray but a bit of that is because he was one of my favourite players, I might just edge Ray for his off ball play which he evolved to become the best in the league at in his prime.

Anyone older than 14 knows its Ray Allen and not even close. Thompson is a good secondary scorer, but hes not a guy you could run the offense through consistently as the main guy the d focuses in on.

Ray played some PG and handled the ball way more than Klay. He attacked the hoop well once too. Not even close,Ray
