Anton123ParticipantThis was a big debate prior to the draft, this site was absolutely certain Buddy Hield was the better player and he did get picked one spot higher.
So, after seeing each player appear in 4 summer league games any thoughts on who is better?
Jamal Murray stats: 28 mpg, 17.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.3 apg, 0.75 spg, 2.75 TOpg, 39 FG%, 26 3P%
Buddy Hield stats: 32.2 mpg, 18.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 3.5 apg, 0.8 spg, 3.25 TOpg, 34 FG%, 24.5 3P%
Very close stats, I would say Jamal Murray clearly wins: despite getting very little touches in the first two games, he actually managed to score more per 36 (22.1) than Hield (20.3) on better percentages and with fewer turnovers. Buddy Hield showed that he can affect the game in ways other than scoring with his rebounding and playmaking.
I know this is just four games, but that’s all we have. I’ve been in the Jamal Murray camp for a while and it’s cool to see him outplaying Hield despite being a lot younger and being considered a lot less NBA-ready.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantI would hardly say he’s been outplaying Hield.. they’ve both been playing equally not that great.

Anton123ParticipantJamal Murray has been playing really well the last two games: 25 points (40% shooting) and 20 points (53%).
I agree they have both been struggling, but Murray has been playing better despite being younger.

holefillers1ParticipantThey started Murray at PG the last two games, he had one assist last night. Two the game before, where he shot 10-25 from the floor. He is not a PG. Move him off the ball

dudo670ParticipantRack up assists when you can’t dribble and aren’t quick enough to make up for that lack of ball handling by blowing by your man. I think Murray can shoot, but that will be his role in the NBA, the catch and shoot Kyle Korver type (if he even gets that good), not this all star level combo guard so many people think he will be.

circumlocution75Participantthe bigger upside…… Hield is Longer & you would think he’s got better measurables but I worry that Hield will be limited to a One dimensional player in the NBA
Now he is in the Perfect situation in New Orleans & I’m guessing the Pelicans took Hield b/c they Like his age & maturity b/c New Orleans is looking to win right now so I think it’s a good fit
Murray has more Skills but in the NBA Hield’s One skill might be better than all off Murray’s Skill set….. Summer League is tough to gage — it’s really a place for fringe guys to make a case a contract & it’s not a true measure of how Skills will translate to the NBA….so we’ll see

goddagParticipantGive it 3 years to compare these guys instead of 4 meaningless games.

OhCanada-ParticipantMurray needs to adjust to the NBA game the same way he did the college game. It may take longer for him then it does for Hield but he is a very smart guy and will figure it out within his role.

Andrew1984ParticipantI believe Jamal Murray is the better prospect, but I expect Hield to be more productive in the short-term, based on the situation in which they find themselves.

MopgrassParticipantHe hasn’t been making it, but I’ve been surprised how well Hield is getting his shot off. He gets more space than I thought he would. I think he’ll warrant his draft position.

IlladelphParticipantFirst off, both players are impressing in summer league. I actually though Hield would have better stats given he is older and had 4 years of college under his belt.
I think if oyu are comparing these two players, remember the age difference. Hield is a tad more than 3 years older than Murray. Hield had 4 years of college to develop. Age-adjusted, Murray has done much better than Hield. Therefore, I’d say that Murray has way mroe upside at this point and may wind up being the better NBA player.
I do think that Hield will get better in the NBA, and I don’t think he has "limited upside" per se. But Murray has to have more upside just based on his age. He was the first rookie to average 20ppg at Kentucky. And, although he has not demonstrated elite PG skills in summer league, after having watched him play the last 2 years, I think he definitely could develop into a very good point guard. If you are drafting for the future, then Murray is a better play since he can already contribute right now, but he also has tremendous upside. Hield can definitely contribute right now as well, but he has less upside.
Having said all of that, I love both players. They are both high character kids, and I would love to have either of them on my team.

BiggysmallsParticipantSummer League is almost completely useless when trying to analyze how a player will be in the NBA.
It’s glorified wreck ball suited for whichever microwave scoring point guard can get the most shots up the quickest. There’s no rhythm or flow to a lot of the games and its ugly basketball.
that said, I’ll still watch it over baseball 😀
