Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantThis is hardly a surprise considering his past history. Not that mcgary is some kind of hardcore drug abuser or anything and whether or not weed should even be illegal is another discussion. However, as long as it is illegal and the NBA tests for it, mcgary might want to consider putting on the shelf for awhile. This is basically his second strike and, like it or not, with that comes a reputation that a player like mcgary who has yet to really establish himself in the league cannot afford. Mcgary is a by all accounts a good guy and a talented player who has the chance to have a nice career. You would hate to see him get derailed by something as inconsequential as this.

Hype MachineSuspended for a legal, non performance enhancing drug, outside of competition.
This policy is stupid, outdated and the players association should fight it.

IlladelphParticipantAssuming the drug violation is smoking marijuana… Personally I think that Americans should have the right to smoke marijuana if they want to. If alcohol is legal, then weed should definitely not be illegal.
I also think that the NBA rules on marijuana are dumb. A guy can go out to a club the night before a game, get wasted on alcohol, stuff money in a womans ass crack until dawn, sleep for a few hours and then show up to a game probably hung over, and that’s not an NBA rules violation, but if he smokes a j while playing some xbox, he’s suddenly a bad actor? That’s ridiculous.
HOWEVER, the NBA has clear rules on marijuana and everyone who plays in the NBA knows them. If smoking marijuana jeopardizes your ability to be participate in the NBA, support your teammates, and make millions of dollars, and live a pretty cool life, and you still willfully violate those rules then that is on you. It is simply an issue of maturity. The guy is immature, and one day he will look back at how he lived his life during his possibly very short NBA career and realize that he was being very foolish by violating the NBA’s drug policy.
