J-rueMykelParticipantLets do a power rankings excercise for each conference. My picks are as follows:
EASTERN CONFERENCE
TOP TIER (Obvious NBA Finals appearance)
1. CLE…LBJ, Kyrie and the rest of the guys are levels ahead of everyone else
SECOND TIER (Potential Eastern Conference Finalists)
2. TOR…Returning most of 56 win team, and adding a top 10 draft pick.
3. BOS…Talent, Youth, and the arrival of a perennial ALL-STAR.
4. IND…..PG is getting some help, was tempted to rank them higher.
THIRD TIER (Plausible Playoff Teams)
5. DET….Andre (Shaq Light) will continue to develop and so will DET’s W total
6. ATL….2 years ago they won 60 games, now their best player is HGH’s corpse
7. CHI….Butler, Wade, and Rondo, sounds nice on paper, but how does it mesh?
8. NYK….Rose, Anthony, and KStraps, sounds nice on paper. But serious depth issues.
9. WAS….Wall is a superstar surrounded by scrubs
10.MIL….Alphabet is a star, this team could take a leap or fall flat on its face.
11.CHA…They finished tied for 3rd in the conference last year, that wont happen again.
12.ORL…Ibaka trade, and Biyombo signing is a monster wildcard in the East.
13.MIA…Losing Wade hurts everywhere, and Bosh’s injury concerns linger.
FOUURTH TIER (Youth movement)
14.PHI….They will be better than last year, that much is guaranteed
FIFTH TIER (Hopeless)
15.BRK…They’d have trouble contending in the top Euroleagues.WESTERN CONFERNCE
TIER 1 (We’re a lot better than everyone else)
1.GSW…All Time Team adds a HOF. Thank you Steph’s ankles and the Salary Cap Jump
2.SAS….Their model of consistent success is mesmorizing.
TIER 2 (Chance to win a playoff series)
3.LAC…Paul, Griffin, & Jordan is a legit big three, the talent drop off after is severe.
4.OKC…Even without KD, this team has a Superstar and serious depth all over the roster.
5.POR….Evan Turner isn’t the splash they were looking for but they still have a squad
6.DAL…The 2nd biggest winners from the KD signing
TIER 3 (Were gonna compete, for a playoff spot)
7.HOU…James Harden is still a sniper, and they made a couple nice lowkey FA signings
8.MEM…Chandler Parsons is not the answer to any question mark.
9.UTA….Most are penciling them into the playoffs, I don’t see it as a guarantee
10.MIN…Probably 1 more year away from post-season, they did look nasty in their late season win over GSW though,
11.NOP…They have a top 5 player in the league, and nothing else
TIER 4 (Were miles away)
12.DEN…Several nice pieces, nothing to take home to mom
13.SAC….Where Kentucky Bigs go to die
14.PHX….Where Kentucky Guards go to die
15.LAL….Mozgov signing was ludicrous, Sam Heinke’s eventually landing spot. After struggling in several spots to rank teams its pretty obvious there is a monster drop-off from the big three (GSW, CLE, SAS) and another severe drop off another four (TOR, BOS, IND, LAC). I think the funnest part of this season will be watching players develop, and younger teams take leaps into ascension in the standings, Enevitably we have two heavyweight fights waiting. The WCF’s and the Finals. I could realistically see 4/5 of the league earning playoff spots if the cards fall the right way, that hasn’t been the case in a long time.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThe Spurs aren’t a tier 1 team? They won 67 games last season and just signed Pau Gasol. You have to consider them title contenders.

sheltwon3ParticipantDallas is too low. They just added Barnes and Bogut. Bogut will be healthy and he was underutlized in GSW. This was a huge grab for Dallas who bring back Deron Williams and Nowitzski. Lakers will do better than Denver. You guys have little fate in Luke Walton.
If Healthy NOP should make the playoffs. They didn’t lost much outside of Anderson. Hield will be more reliable than Gordon. If Tyreke and Holloday play more than 70%, you have yourself an interesting match up.
OKC is not making the playoffs unless the rest of the West suck. We saw them miss the playoffs the year Durant got hurt. Westbrook can not do it alone and more than likely will be traded.
Also as much as you hate D Howard, in the East, his prescence will have ATL in the playoffs or at least in the 9th spot.

J-rueMykelParticipantOKC as constructed is solidly in the playoffs. They have a deep roster even with the KD departure and with offseason to build the team around RWB, they will be much better than the lost season. RWB/Oladipo/Kanter/Adams are all very good players. Payne, McGary, Ilyasova, Sabonis, and Roberson all bring NBA skills to the table. I agree that RWB is likely to be traded, but until that happens I have to project them as the roster sits. Even if they move RWB, they will get something decent in return, maybe it’s players maybe it’s picks, but until that happens they are right there behind LAC to challenge for the 4 spot in the West.
I’m assuming your DAL and ATL comments are directed towards White Mamba and not me as we appear to be on the same page with these teams, but assuming NOP makes the playoffs is far from a forgone conclusion. They lost their second best player from last season and if Holliday can stay healthy is still a big IF. That roster is AD and group of garbage. I feel sorry for Anthony Davis.
I don’t see why you expect LAL to be better than DEN, there is literally nothing there besides a couple high lottery picks who are still a ways away from being able to realistically shine. A coach can only do so much with a development league roster.

OhCanada-ParticipantOKC missed the playoffs the year Durant got hurt by half a game. They lost a tiebreaker to the Pelicans when New Orleans beat San Antonio in the final regular season game. Westbrook missed 15 games that year coming back from a major injury and they didn’t have half the depth this roster has. They were relying on Jeremy Lamb and Perry Jones to step up and neither did.
