dudo670ParticipantI still have questions about Ben Simmons’ defense in the NBA. Going into the draft, I had concerns about his ability to defend at a high level in the NBA. Simmons has short arms for a guy 6’10" and doesn’t have great lateral quickness. A couple of times last night he took poor angles on closeouts and got beat off the dribble (by Jaylen Brown once or twice in particular). It’s not like he was supposed to be an elite post defender coming out of college either. While I don’t think Simmons is a bad defender I just think he projects to be an above average to good defender at best. He was only 2/9 against the Celtics too. My belief on the summer league is that if you play really well it means nothing, but if you don’t play well it could raise red flags (Okafor last year, Anthony Bennett 2013, Evan Turner I remember in 2010 as a few examples). If he’s not an elite defender or elite scorer, can he really be a superstar?
I don’t feel I’m overreacting as I have been a little more reserved about Simmons all along, I just am wondering what some other people feel about the upside defensively for Ben Simmons.
Also, for those in love with the Lebron comps, Lebron won his NBA summer league debut by 27 points. He also had Boozer on his team but it wasn’t even close.

For_Never_EverParticipantI think he will be a solid defender with his IQ and positioning. Watching him with NBA athletes made me know he isn’t as athletic as this site rates him. I see him being a prime Lamar Odom/Boris Diaw type versatile defender.

negguaryParticipantif you actually watched the game you would have realized that he was clearly in control of the game and hisself. He can dictate the pace he wants to play at and adapts the game to him!

For_Never_EverParticipantThe thing is I’m talking about his defense.

McDunkinYou could be wrong or you could be right
either way one summer league game is way too soon. Who knows what improvements he could make between now and the end of the season

ashock34ParticipantThis kid will be the next big thing if just for his ability to rebound, start the break and pass. 6-10 and 245lbs! I would not want to defend against that on the break. His shot however will take time with repitition and confidence being the key. He is the ROY. No doubt. Cant wait to watch Sixers vs. Lakers summer league game.

dudo670ParticipantYeah after watching one summer league game (just like his college season), like I said its hard to put a lot of stock into it but you can tell he is a once in a generation passer for a guy his size. How many guys 6’10" can sky for a rebound and push the ball up the floor and whiz a pass into a tight window?

alex23ParticipantIt was one game for 23 mins and he had cramps, a bit too early to say anything substantive about his future, don’t you think?

NBAjunkie81Participantw/ Defense……. I realize Simmons did Not play Seasoned NBA vets yet but people are Projecting him against what they think he will do against NBA players……
Early on you look for Glimpses of Skills that Jump off the screen & Simmons had plenty — an Ex NBA player did the broadcast for the NBA channel & several times he just burst out laughing b/c Simmons would do something he just could Not believe he was seeing
Simmons court vision, speed & athleticism for a 6’10” 245 lb man just jumped off the screen…….
What was really shocking was that the Celtics had basically all 1st round picks playing & several have a year of experience in the NBA — whereas the Sixers had a bunch of 2nd rounder & free agents playing
& Simmons was head & shoulders the best talent on the floor & he actually made that garbage D-League team Phila put out there look like a real team — his vision & ability made ALL his teammates More dangerous…… the NBA broadcaster kept repeating:
"I know the Sixers ball movement looks really good but I want to remind people that Simmons has Never played w/ these teammates before – he just arrived yesterday…"
Simmons passing & Leadership (he was clearly the boss out there, Very intense, reminded me of Kobe’s attitude) was Infectious & All the players began Making the Extra Pass & it Opened up So many easy buckets for Phila……
Twitter highlights did Not do it justice, you had to watch the flow of the game in Real time & it was quite impressive

DanielcmccartyParticipantI actually was stunned at this post. I think he has the potential if he applies himself to be an excellent defender in the NBA. Being 6’10, that fluid of an athlete, and his length gives him the potential to guard just about any position. Not sure what angles you’re talking about that he missed on Jaylen Brown, because I saw him anticipate Jaylens move, and beat him to the spot while being squared up chest to chest and took the charge on the 3 point line…in summer league ball. If Simmons applies himself defensively, he can be a great defender
