IlladelphParticipantI was going over myy mock, and doing some last minute tinkering, and I started to look at the ages of all of the players. One thing that stood out to me, is that in spite of having a ton of one-and-done hopefuls, there are very few players that are true freshman age. I.e. – a college true freshman should be 18 years old. Then I started looking at all of the ages of the draftees. It’s intersting to note the ages of some of the big names.
Looking at the first round, here are some notes
Oldest draft hopeful: Michael Gbinije – 24 yrs old. (A.J. Hammons at 23.8 yrs old not far behind)
Oldest one-and-done hopefuls: Malachi Rischardson 20.4 yrs old (Skal 20.2 yrs old, Ben Simmons 3rd oldest at 1 month shy of 20 years old)
Youngest one-and-done hopeful: Brandon Ingram 18.8 yrs old
A whole bunch of 19 year-old freshman:
Deyonta Davis 19.5
Malik Beasley 19.5
Jaylen Brown 19.6
Stephen Zimmerman 19.7
Dejounte Murray 19.7
Hell Cheick Diallo just graduated high school and he is nearly 20 years old.
Without digging in to all of these players’ backgrounds, just wondering if it is the norm these days to repeat years of high school or middle school to gain an edge on the competition. It’s not uncommon to see a senior who is a little older because of red-shirting, or transferring, but freshman are coming in a year older it seems, and in some cases 2 years older. Look at Dwayne Bacon who is turning 21 in August and he just finished his freshman year.

mamadouParticipantChriss is still 18.
Lebron was already a 23-5-5 as an 18 yo, a 25-7-7 as a 19 yo, 30-7-7 as a 20 yo.
Good luck with that, prodigy simmons…

Anton123ParticipantAn interesting question could be: should we look at age more than high school class?
Everyone is seen as a freshman or a sophmore, while, when looking at international prospects we judge them exclusively by birth year.
People rarely talk about Domantas Sabonis and Skal being born in the same month or Malachi Richardson being 23 months older than Dragan Bender.
Many are giving up on Mykhailuk becuase he is a college junior already when in reality he is younger than his soon to be teammate Josh Jackson.
I’m not saying we should, I’m just putting forward the question.

theballerwayParticipantSvi went to HS/prep instead of college where he’d be ranked now. That Kansas move was an interesting ne that might cost him a bit of money initially assuming he makes the league. Technically hes due to breakout year based on his age/maturity and knowledge of Kansas system etc.
