I don’t know about anyone else, but one of my favorites parts of draft day are the trades. Now there are few candidates more likely to make a deal then others because they have multiple first round picks. Those teams are:

    1. Boston. They have three first round picks #3, #16, and #23. They also have 5 second round picks. Boston is a playoff team and I can’t imagine that they keep the majority of their picks because they already have a strong roster. Danny Ainge is known to make large deals on draft day.

    2. Denver. They have three first round picks #7, #15, and #19. They also have two second round picks. Denver isn’t a surety to make a deal on the draft day, but they have a lot of young players already so adding another three first round picks may not be what they really want.

    3. Philadelphia. They have three first round picks #1, #24, and #26. The 76ers could actually add all three draft picks as they are lacking in talent and balance. The reason the 76ers are so likely to make a deal is they have three young centers who aren’t likely to play well together. It would make sense if the Colangelo’s remake the roster during the draft. Plus their best hope of adding a solid veteran without massively overpaying is through a trade.

    4. Phoenix. They have three first round draft picks #4, #13, and #28. They also have one second round pick. Phoenix could very well stand pat and bring in three rookies or maybe two and draft and stash the third. Having multiple first round picks could perhaps jump start their roster. Also I have to wonder if the Suns will look to move Tyson Chandler as the team has another young big in Alex Len who could benefit from an increase in minutes.

    5. Toronto. Toronto has two first round draft picks #9 and #27. Toronto was a playoff team and made it all the way to the conference finals. Toronto has the #9 pick from robbing the New York Knicks in the deal they made for Andrea Bargnani. It’s possible the Raptors make a deal for a player more likely to help them next year rather than a rookie.

Are there any teams you expect to make a deal during Thursday’s draft?

I think Boston, Denver and Phoenix may look to consolidate some of their picks maybe not the highest ones. But with so many teams having multiple picks it will be hard to move up as we assume Philly and Lakers aren’t budging from 1 or 2. T-Wolves will look to hold steady at 5 I guess.

I don’t know what Sac-Town or New Orleans might do with their picks if they want a more established player in.

I think Toronto will look to keep 9th pick as they get a good player in on the rookie pay deal thus allowing flexability to try and retain FA’s.

My honest opinion with Boston and 3rd pick is that Danny Ainge will draft and then look at FA and if he lands a target or thinks he can land a target by getting a proven team mate in, he may flip the pick. Ainge is a canny guy and my instinct is he will like as many options as he can have come FA season.

I could see the Knicks looking to buy into the first round if a later pick was available. If you were a team like GSW at 30 in the draft and you get $3 million for that pick and can use that to offset a signing on veteran’s minimum then the deal looks a no brainer.

While I would never say anything is guarenteed, there are several I think have a good chance of occurring.

     1. ATL trades Jeff Teague. He is a year away from free agency and they want to give Schroder more playing time. Philly seems logical and a good pg like him would help everyone else’s development, but I could see DET at least considering sending 18 for him. They need another point guard and do not appear to like this draft.

    2. SAC trades back. I could see both Denver and Boston trying to move up here. Boston will be aggresive if Brown is available at 8.

    3. Denver and Boston sell there last pick in the second round.

    4. Okafor is traded to Boston. I think Philly waits until the last second to see if they can get a better offer, but in the end they get 3 and another sweetner from Boston.
