KingslayerParticipant2015/2016 record: 56-26 *Contract values courtesy of Spotrac.
Roster (16/17 salary): Valanciunas ($14.4 mil), Carroll ($14.2 mil), Lowry ($12.0 mil), Ross ($10.0 mil), Joseph ($7.3 mil), PatPat ($6.1 mil), Bebe ($1.9 mil), Caboclo ($1.6 mil), Wright ($1.6 mil), Powell ($0.9 mil). TOTAL =~ $69.9 million
Notable FA’s & Contract options (16/17 option/ cap hold): Derozan (UFA, $15.2mil), Biyombo (UFA, $3.4mil), Johnson (UFA), Scola (UFA)
R1 Draft picks (16/17 salary): 9th & 27th overall ($3.9 million total)
Total Cap Commitment: = $69.9mil + $3.9mil = $73.8 million. $18.2 million in projected cap space
Stat to know: The Raps had a -27.6 net rating when Lowry was on the bench in 20 playoff games. Even with his playoff shooting struggles, he was still by far their best player.
Backcourt: Full disclosure – I live in Toronto and I’m a huge Raps fan… Obviously the Derozan situation is offseason priority #1, and I’d put the odds at roughly 50/50 at this point. Demar sounds like he wants to stay, although the Raps are well aware he is not worth a max contract. The Raps will likely be aggressive in the trade market this offseason, as they have very little cap space to address the weak frontcourt, and have more young prospects & upcoming draft picks than they could possibly need. Powell & Ross provide solid depth (with some upside) on the wing, but they are definitely trade candidates. Delon Wright is also a strong candidate to be moved, as he has trade value after impressing in very limited minutes as a rookie, and has no path to playing time with Lowry and CoJo entrenched at PG. Besides pick #9, the Raps own 3 mediocre first round picks over the next two drafts, and also have a couple former 1st-rounders in Bruno & Bebe who may have some marginal trade value. This is purely speculation, but the Raps could save $20-25+ million per season by using some of the aforementioned players/picks to trade up for an NBA-ready SG in Buddy Hield, and let Demar walk.
Frontcourt: As a huge fan, it pains me to say this- Biyombo is gone. The Raps don’t own his bird rights, meaning they do not have the cap space to re-sign him unless Demar leaves. Even if that were the case, Biz cannot share the floor with JV, and is therefore limited to being a pure backup 5 in Toronto. Biyombo simply isn’t worth the $15+ mil price tag it would cost the Raps to sign yet another C with no versatility. Bebe may be able to step in as a backup C for 10-15 mpg next season, and JV is poised for more minutes & production after a great playoff performance. PatPat is a solid stretch PF off the bench, and Carroll should be much better in his SF/small-ball 4 role with improved health next season. Toronto has a gaping hole at PF however. Besides the C position, the roster also lacks a lot of size (Lowry is tiny, CoJo is very small for an SG playing half his min. next to Lowry, Ross has poor length, PatPat plays below-the-rim, Powell is short, etc.). Ideally, the Raps would have a versatile, long, mobile stretch 4 who’s able to protect the rim. Since those don’t grow on trees, they are very likely to draft a PF they could mold for the future. Options include: Bender, Davis, Chriss, Maker, Skal, Ellenson, Sabonis, or even Poeltl.
Outlook: The Raps had a fantastic season, but have a critical offseason approaching. They have a mix of talented players, draft assets and young players, but Masai Ujiri will need to get creative in order to build a legit contender. He’s such an unpredictable GM that I have really no idea what the Raps will do. Taking that next step to become a legit top contender will be extremely difficult, but I have my fingers crossed that Massiah can keep them on their upward trajectory.

gforce03ParticipantI had been thinking a lot lately about the Raptors. Like you said, mobile stretch 4 doens’t grow on trees, I was looking at someone who they maybe able to acquire through trade.
Idealistcally, you will go after someone like Ryan Anderson but that’s probably not gonna happen. Thus I’ve been gauging the value of Kenneth Faried, who didn’t play consistent minutes under Mike Malone last season, fills the void thats left by Biyombo, his style of play should fit pretty good next to Jonas I think.
I was thinking somehwere along the line of CoJo+Ross+27 for Faried+19 (or the 15 if the Denver is willing to so)
At pick 19, raptors maybe able to get a 2 guard like Furkan / Malik, the trade also open up miuntes for Delon Wright. What do you think?

gforce03ParticipantI would like to hear some comments from where the negs are coming from. Is an open discussion.

Untouchable JParticipantLet Damar walk. Let Byombo walk. Its a new day n age comign with this cap space. Neither of those guys are worth it. your current depth allows you to seemlessly move past them.
Ross can start at SG. Byombo and Valencuinuas CANT play together, so thats an easy decison to me.
At #9 i say take a gamble and draft Dejaunte Murray as Derozans eventuial replacement.
Toronot as a city, oddly enough in large parta thanks to Drake, isnt viewed as the albatross it once was. In 2017 they can throw that Derozan/Byombo money at a more deservign and impactful player.

BiggysmallsParticipantCap space doesn’t mean a whole lot for the Raptors because they aren’t going to attract big-name free agents. So they might as well sign DeRozan to the max. If Harrison Barnes is going to get close to a max deal, DeRozan should get a max deal.
Sidenote—with all these guys getting max deals, doesn’t it kind make the word "max" feel a little worthless?
Anyways, if I’m the Raptors, my thought process going into this is we just saw Lowry and DeRozan trade off terrible performances for the better part of the playoffs, and we will got within two games of getting to the finals.
Carroll missed 50-some games, Valanciunas missed time in the playoffs and even though Biyombo was a beast, he’s replacable.
I would be targeting guys like David West, Terrence Jones and maybe Ryan Anderson as guys I’d like at that PF spot. I’d draft an upside PF at 9 like a Skal or Chriss – though that looks unlikely now – and give them the proverbial redshirt year.
Toronto is in a good spot. They’ve got good depth, good defensive players and enough youth that it seems like their window is open and could be for another 3-5 years.

OllstarParticipantDeMar leaving at 50/50 seems a little high. I’d say 70/30 he stays. Give him the max and draft Sabonis. Anyone who thinks DeMar is not max is smoking some of that medicinal.
