Off topic but one of, if not the greatest boxer of all-time passed away at 74 after a long battle with Parkinsons Disease.  Was definitely one of the most confident and outspoken athletes of all time.  What player do you guys think was most like Ali?

Charles Barkley was outspoken like Muhammad Ali.  But, not really political, nor THE BEST at his sport for long periods of time.

I would go with the current TOP guy — LeBron James.  He has a HUGE following, a social media superstar, which is something Michael Jordan didn’t have to put up with.

Lots of people love him, and lots of people hate him.

Not a bad guy, but he was an anti-hero when he took his talents to South Beach.

Has been THE GUY or one of THE GUYS for well over a decade now.

Ali was known for the rivalries.  Sonny Liston.  George Foreman.  Joe Frazier.

LeBron had Dirk.  Never played Kobe in the Finals but it was always a rivalry.  Durant.  Went through OKC for a title.  LeBron (sometimes LITERALLY) vs. the Spurs Dynasty.  Steph Curry and the rest of the Ultimate Warriors.

The player most like Mohammed Ali has to be Rasheed Wallace or Gary Payton  personality wise, although neither of these players were the goat of the sport so Jordan could also be used in that sense

I’d say none compare. Personality wise two guys I would throw out there are Gary Payton and Rasheed Wallace as far as an impact on the sport I would say Micheal Jordan but Muhammed Ali was a combination of both and incomparable in that sense.

Connor mcgregor personality wise and he is currently in the discussion for best in his sport although his next couple fights will be telling. Also whoever gets compared to Ali would not only have to be great athletes with a brash personality that sold tickets but also someone with a political impact. Ali help brake some barriers in that he didn’t always play by the rules of the day, he did his own thing which helped empower the black athlete during an era where there was a lot of racial strife. Many of today’s athletes are afraid to speak on things that might stir controversy.

Muhammad Ali was simply the Greatest. Others may have won more medals, money or titles than him but no-one came close to transending their sport or life in general like he did. With his charisma and the skill to back it up he became one of the most famous people on earth and even after having lost possibly his 3 peak years due to his convictions he returned and regained the titles he had never officially lost.

He was as loved here in the UK as he was back in the US and his death leaves this world a lesser place.

IMO the best NBA comparison to Ali is Kareem, and not just because of the conversion to Islam and his subsequent name change.

I think most people remember 80s Lakers Kareem that they forget the complete story of Kareem. The dominant early days in NYC, how outspoken he was and how critical the media was of him in Milwaukee especially for demanding a trade to LA or NYC after five years in Wisconsin.

He was a larger than life figure who skirted with controversy. Acting in movies with Bruce Lee and Leslie Nielson. Punching out a player who was being too physical with him all game.

Like Ali, he had his rivalries. Early rivalry with an older but still dominant Wilt, late 70s rivalry with Bill Walton and then a subsequent rivalry with Moses Malone.

But more than anything else Kareem has an unquestionable respect for Ali’s legacy: http://www.rollingstone.com/sports/news/read-kareem-abdul-jabbars-tribute-to-friend-and-mentor-muhammad-ali-20160604

Barkley was the probably the closest comparison personality wise but let’s be honest here. There was never any athlete in any sport who came close to Ali in terms of cultural significance. What he did in the ring made him a legend but what he did outside the ring made him an icon. He was so much more than just a boxer. There was never any athlete who stood for as much and was willing to sacrifice so much for what he believed in.

Ali wasn’t the best athlete I’ve ever seen (that honor probably goes to Michael Jordan) but he was easily the most important sporting figure of all time imo. Rest in peace to a true icon. The world will truly miss you.

to me ali is the greatest athlete of all time..his image was larger than life.i can watch those pre-fight interviews all day long.he was a great self promoter, long before twitter, tmz or cnn came along.i can only imagine if he was boxing today, the effect he’ll have on today’s media .

he accomplished alot and had a ton of memorable quotes that i admire..but to me it was his refusal to join the military and not go to war is what stands out the most to me…i mean the guy was at the height of his career and was willing to give up everything..he received death threats becuz of it.

Ali was almost Kareem, MJ, Magic roled into one given his stature and influence on his sport. Interestingly he only had a couple of film roles given his charisma and showmanship and that he missed 3 years of his career.

He was due to fight Wilt Chamberlain in the early 1970’s but Wilt called the fight off rumoured to be because Ali said he was going to knock him out and kept shouting “Timber” at him in a press conference.
