moochieeParticipantI always find it interesting to see where other peoples’ heads are at when comparing two players that play the same position and are in roughly the same draft range. Let me know who you would select first between the players listed below and give a brief explanation. I’ll go first.
Kris Dunn vs. Jamal Murray – Dunn. Very tough choice. Defense and playmaking skills are in Dunn’s favor, but Murray is just a baller and a big time shot maker. In the end the questions of whether Murray will be able to create his own shot at the next level make Dunn the safer pick for me.
Deyonta Davis vs. Marquese Chriss – Davis. Chriss is a phenomenal with a lot of upside. He’s just so raw at this point that the bust potential is too high. Davis is a very good athlete in his own right who rebounds and defends better right now. There’s offensive upside for both of them, but I take Davis because the rebounding and defense should be solid even if he doesn’t develop the offense.
Domantas Sabonis vs. Henry Ellenson – Sabonis. Tough choice. Both are going to struggle defensively at the next level. Ellenson has better ball skills (dribbling, shooting), but Sabonis has an underrated midrange jumper that should continue to develop as well. Sabonis’ motor tips this one in his favor.
Deandre Bembry vs. Taurean Prince – Prince. I like both players, but Prince has higher role player potential to me. Knocks down threes at a better rate and should be able to guard both forward positions.
Denzel Valentine vs. Wade Baldwin – Baldwin. Not a big fan of Valentine’s. He’s got amazing court vision and passing ability, but I don’t think he will be able to create offense against NBA athletes. Baldwin has the size and length to be a great defender. He’s got areas to work on as well, I just like his athletic potential more.
AJ Hammons vs. Damian Jones – Hammons. Can’t pass on Hammons size. He’s a big dude even by NBA standards and could be a legit rim protector. Damian Jones is a ridiculous athlete for a center. His feel for the game is very low however, and the intensity is often lacking. Hammons had a great senior year and finally seemed to be putting it all together. I think he has a good NBA career.
Malachi Richardson vs. Malik Beasley – Beasley. Richardson showed flashes, but his freshman season on the whole was really inefficient. Beasley isn’t an all-star but I think he can be a good energy, 3 and D guy off of the bench. I can see the intrigue with Richardson, but he seems like a swing for the fences type pick to me. Ultimately I don’t think he pans out.
Malcolm Brogdon vs. Patrick McCaw – McCaw. Tough choice. Do you go with the experience or the upside? Ultimately, I think that one of Brogdon’s greatest strengths, his defense, isn’t going to translate as well to the NBA. Not quick enough to defend guards at the next level IMO. McCaw, while not ready to contribute right now, could turn himself into a valuable piece down the road.
Feel free to add your own to the discussion!

UncledrewParticipantKris Dunn vs Jamal Murray- I think both will end up top 5 players from this draft so you can’t go wrong but Murray’s youth and upside makes him the pick
Deyontae Davis vs Marquese Chris- Davis is obviously bigger and longer with better defensive potential but he reminds me of a camby/ whiteside type player on offense. As a top 10 pick I want a guy with offensive potential so Chris is my guy.
Domatas Sabonis vs Henry Ellenson- Sabonis may be a better rebounder and tougher in the paint but his limited athleticism will limit his ability at the NBA level. Ellenson’s offensive package at 6’11 is too much to pass on.
Denzel Valentine vs Wade Baldwin- I think Valentine can be solid role player but his limited athleticism is glaring at the next level. On the other hand Baldwin has elite physical tools for the point guard position. It wouldn’t surprise me if he makes the lottery so he’s my pick.

zcnumerounoParticipantKris Dunn vs. Jamal Murray – Dunn. This is the closest one for me. Murray will be a very good player at the next level and will be a 20ppg scorer, in my opinion. However, Dunn’s all-around game takes the cake here. I think Dunn’s potential is underrated. I really believe that he will be a John Wall-type of point guard at the next level – a guy that can put up 15-5-9 type numbers, while also being an elite defender. You can’t lose with either of these guys.
Deyonta Davis vs. Marquese Chriss – Davis. I think Chriss is a tweener, and although these guys are more likely to succeed in today’s NBA, and this will hurt his prospects in the NBA. He’s an exciting athlete, but I see his career more likely to resemble Derrick Williams than anything else. Deyonta Davis is also raw and athletic, but his position is more defined. He’s a very good per-minute player on both ends, but will need to prove he can play that way in longer intervals of time on the court.
Domantas Sabonis vs. Henry Ellenson – Ellenson. You’re right, both players will be below-average defenders in the league, but Ellenson’s stretch-4 ability and his offensive versatility – can handle the ball well – makes him a better prospect, IMO, than Sabonis.
Deandre Bembry vs. Taurean Prince – Prince. I like Bembry – I think he and Prince will be very good role players at the next level, but Prince’s shooting ability edges him over Bembry.
Denzel Valentine vs. Wade Baldwin – Baldwin. I really like Valentine – and that’s saying a lot coming from a Badger fan – but his athletic limitations will keep him from being anything more than a role player. Baldwin has the potential to be a good starter with 1st-team all defense potential.
AJ Hammons vs. Damian Jones – Hammons. Hammons, to me, is very underrated. You can’t teach size, and boy does he have it. He has also really developed a nice touch around the basket with some solid post moves. He’s also a good rebounder and will be a solid rim-protector at the next level. I could see him starting some day, and he has a much higher floor than Jones, who although is an incredible athlete, just doesn’t seem to get it. I think he busts.
Malachi Richardson vs. Malik Beasley – Beasley. Like you said, Richardson looks great in flashes. He took over the game against Virginia and won them that game. However, I see his career resembling JR Smith’s – a guy who can shoot you to a win, and a guy who can shoot you out of a game. I think he’ll be an inconsistently (and inefficient) brilliant shooter/scorer in the league, more suited to come off the bench. Beasley’s consistency and higher basketball IQ makes him the better prospect. I think he’ll be a good 3-and-D player in the league.
Malcolm Brogdon vs. Patrick McCaw – Brogdon. Although Brogdon will be on the slower side of NBA 2-guards, I still believe he will be a plus-defender in the league. His passion (the “It” factor), motor and technique will make him a great defender, and he’ll be a lethal 3-and-D player in the league for a long time, IMO. McCaw has more upside, but his floor is much lower than that of Brogdon’s.
