XavierAllTheWayParticipantso a week ago I said Atlanta should just blow up their team and start over….got slammed on forum. Again, I will say it again, if u are not one of the top 5 teams, then tank and hope u land a superstar in draft.

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantThe Hawks are sorry. How many years in a row are you going to lose in the 1st or second round of the playoffs before you’ve had enough. Lol Al Horford and Teague arnt the answer. Blow it up.

Hype MachineYou deserved to get slammed. Think of the practicality of 25 tanking teams.
The secret to success isnt that complicated.
Create an environment where great players want to come, draft well, trade well, hire great staff and improve.

Teams should only tank if they are one of the 2nd or 3rd worst teams.

CavFanPRParticipantAtlanta looked like a top tier team last season, even had a 19 game winning streak. They came back down to earth this season though.

markfitz14ParticipantI think with Korver having a couple injuries he is just not the same. Not having that elite 3pt shooting has changed the flow of the team a ton.

circumlocution75Participanton the San Antonio Spurs…….. & the Spurs have a Great organization……… but they realize they Need a Star level player to get "over the Top" & compete for a Championship……..
R.C. Buford was planning to make a run at LaMarcus Aldridge 4 years before he became a Free Agent…… & that is the last step that the Hawks must complete to put them over the top w/ Free Agents & contend…..
I really believe the Hawks have done a Fantastic job & they are set up for success for years to come…… people forget that Atlanta was Drafting in the Lottery for 9 years b/c they were under .500 from 99/00′ to 07/08’…………..
Since then they have made the playoffs & finished above .500 every year but one (2013/14′)…… That is the definition of a consistent Franchise…… I understand it’s frustrating for Hawks fans…… but w/ the Salary cap expansion……
I beleive the Hawks are set up to draw interests from Top Free Agents………. who want to go to a really good team on the verge of challenging the Top teams…….

BeastMode716Participantwe are forgetting how strong Cleveland really is……… The Cavs w/o their starting Star Guard & Star Forward….. Their #2 & #3 scoring options – Love & Irving……. Beat the Golden State Warriors twice in the Finals……. & came within a 5 minute Overtime of winnign 3 games……. against a team we Now all recognize as a generational great team…….
The Hawks do Not match up well against the Cavs…… But I would like the Hawks chances against any other Eastern Conference team……. I like what Hype posted…… & I also understand how upset & frustrated Atlanta fans are………
But Atlanta has to keep building on what they have already accomplished & perhaps they can acquire a Top scoring Talent thru Free Agency or Trade……..
But I Def would Not blow that team up…….. Just hang in there & keep plugging away……

TheGuyParticipantNothing wrong with being a good, solid, competitive team every season and just chipping at it and hoping you catch lighting in a bottle and maybe sorta luck your way into a possible title. Nobody thought Dallas was going to win a title and then hey stuff happens. I don’t think it’s going to happen with this Atlants team but not every team can win a title, there’s value to actually being good. It would take 30 years for every team to win a title.
Atlanta has become relevent in the NBA and the city has been enjoying the run. You don’t need a championship to be a success, that’s not how life works, there are tiers of success. Some have moderate success others hit the jackpot, some don’t at all. That’s just how life in general works.
If wanna mock Atlanta, mock them for playing godawful, mock them for being LeBron and the Cav’s B1tch. But year after year putting together solid teams, nah
Throwing away winning for a lotto ticket for a possible chance to win a title way away in the future, doesn’t usually work out like you want it to and you’ll end up just wishing to be a halfway decent team.
I would understand and respect if Atlanta wanted to pull the plug on this era, make moves to invest for long term, but people taking winning way too much for granted. Guess you really don’t know what ya got ’til it’s gone. You know how misreable Hawks fans were before this era? How misreable Atlanta sports fans are in general? Plenty of other teams that haven’t even made they playoffs in forever. Winning is fun.

Phenomenal1Man I feel like people are just dumb and/or lazy. They want to act like know the secret to everything. In the NBA, "if you aint a title contender than tank and hope you get a superstar, so easy to figure out duhhhrrrr". NFL "gotta have an elite qb to win a championship duhhhhrrr" while the Broncos win with a qb who was playing godawful and had his name not been Manning people would realize this ideology to winning isn’t absolute.

XavierAllTheWayParticipantSomebody posted -"create a good environment and superstars will come". Lol. No superstars going to come to places like Atlanta, Memphis, New Orleans, philly, etc….good luck with never even coming close to a championship with that strategy. And for those that said they just happy with a good, competitive team….why compete if not to be the best

BiggysmallsParticipantI’m actually surprised there are so many posters using so much logic on this. It’s kind of restoring my faith in sports people.
Of course I’ll turn on ESPN and it’ll be gone again but whatever.
There’s nothing wrong with being a consistent playoff team. If I’m an owner and my team makes the playoffs every year, advances to the second or third round every couple years and wins 45-55 games a season…I’m doing really well.
From an owner’s perspective, why would you blow that up to suck again for a few years and likely get back to the same spot again?
29 teams don’t win the championship every year. So really why should Atlanta blow it up while Miami shouldn’t? Toronto? Dallas? Houston? OKC? All these teams get to the playoffs and haven’t won it lately…it’s silly to say "blow it up"…what are you blowing it up for? The chance to be in the same spot 5 years later after losing a ton of money?

Phenomenal1You don’t have to tank to get a superstar dummy. In fact when has tanking long term every worked out?Miami was already a good team with Wade and traded for Shaq than years later they signed superstars LeBron and Bosh. Spurs signed Aldridge, traded to draft Leonard and lucked into him becoming a superstar. Clippers traded for Paul. Lakers were a good team and traded a good Vlade to draft a young Kobe and signed Shaq.GS wasn’t tanking when the got Curry, they just sucked and drafted well. You don’t need the #1 pick to get a great player that’s a proven fact.

XavierAllTheWayParticipantFirst of all, please refrain from calling me or anyone names. It’s okay to disagree but let’s not get personal. When I advocate the idea of tanking, i am excluding teams like Miami, NY, LA, Dallas , Orlando and all the other markets that is attractive to superstars free agents. The rest needs to either get extremely lucky to draft a hidden gem or tank, blow up their teams in order to get lottery picks to built a team to contend. This is the new nba and the players nowadays look at things outside of basketball to make their decisions on where to play. I am a huge Celtics fan and unless they get lucky with lottery or some one like Minnesota /Seattle helped them out by trading Garnett and Allen, they won’t sniff another championship

Clearly you weren’t including those teams as you mentioned that besides the top 5 teams everyone should tank, you clearly are wrong and nobody agree wth your general blanket statement about teams should tank.

dmo21ParticipantNobody is arguing that high picks aren’t helpful. You can get high picks by winning the lottery or just being a bad team. You can be a bad team without tanking. That’s something people need to understand. That’s the difference between Philadelphia and Orlando.

ExumInfernoParticipantThis is something that could happen, a rebuild is forced on them. If Horford leaves, Bazemore and Humphries are also unrestricted free agents, then the Hawks are likely done. It will mean a roster that might get the 8th playoff spot, might not, and no real ability to do better.
If Horford leaves, then the Hawks might trade Teague, then they have their old Jazz players Millsap and Korver who have some value to other teams and if they move them the rebuild, and tanking, could really be on.
It is all about Horford, his exit could start the blow it up. If Horford stays, they try to keep everyone else and hope they can have a season or two where they can get by the Cavs.
There is the other idea, if Horford goes they can replace him with Dwight Howard.

celticsthugTanking is for suckers. It is better to be good and build on what you got. The answer to getting better is almost never to get rid of your best player in his prime.

HitsterParticipantThe Hawks are a solid play off team now. If they were going to blow it up then it would have been when they went 38-44 in 2013-14 but the next year they bounced back and won 60 games. They have won a play off series this year against a young improving Boston team so they are still a sound team.
They lost Carroll to the Raptors and Korver has had injuries this season and Splitter has hardly played either, a lot will depend what Horford does in FA and if they want to rebuild they could flip one of Teague or Schroder for a good package.
As Circ75 says above the Hawks try to follow a Spurs model, clearly targeting FAs they think they have a good chance of getting and going all out for them.
