OhCanada-ParticipantCan’t say I’m surprised. The offense is stagnant the pressure is high and the team looked like they would lose from the opening tip. The biggest problem of all problems is one that I don’t know how to address without firing or trading leaders.
This team has terrible body language and attitude throughout the game. They are playing scared basketball. Valanciunas shot 4-14 from shots five feet from the basket. Lowry shot 1-7 from 3 and Derozan 5-19 and 0-3 from 3. Scared hesitant basketball.
As a huge Raptors fan and supporter of the franchise from the first tip I’m extremely disappointed and super salty. This loss was a tough one to watch I don’t know if I can watch the next game.
Figure it out!

TheGuyParticipantThey need to get into their offense sooner, they took waaaaaaay too many shots with the shotclock winding down, it’s like playing against a 6th defender.
And man, Paul George is still really really good

KingslayerParticipantI was at the game and the Raps were really lethargic getting into their sets on offense. They got outworked just trying to get their spots on offense, especially off the ball. That plus the game one jitters made it a really disappointing effort….
The fans (including myself) have no tolerance for that after 2 first round exits. They’re a much better team than that and they need to perform like it

BleedGreen808Participant7 straight playoff losses as the higher seed for the Raptors. They really need to get over the hump and they can’t keep losing these games at home.

phila9012ParticipantPG13 played great defense, derozen couldn’t do anything. The east has a lot of pretty good teams after the cavs but no standout team that could compete for a top 4 seed in the west. I think this game shows that. There are five really 4(cavs, thunder, spurs warriors) if the clippers get a few breaks they have a chance of winning a title. None of the other teams are really that close to that group. Raptors need a leader like you said. They have been missing that the last few years. A guy like VC or richard jefferson who have been around success in the NBA would have been helpful.

OhCanada-ParticipantRaptors were 6-5 against those listed teams in the regular season. They beat all those teams but GSW which accounted for 2 of the 5 losses in close games. They just aren’t coping with the appointed pressures To repeat what’s been stated so far they don’t have a savvy leader that can cope with the pressure so nobody is taking the initiative and playing their game taking shots within the flow of the game and they are getting buried into late shotclocks and forced shots in the half court.

phila9012ParticipantThe play offs are different. The Raptors don’t seem to be able to handle the pressure of the playoffs. They have lost in the first round twice. They got carroll, and he would help if he could play 30 to 35 minutes a game to defend PG13. This is where the smart GMs like Masai seem to miss it. Some things don’t make sense when you look at it analytically but make basketball sense. You need veteran leaders on your team to win like derek fisher and Nazr Mohammed on the young thunder squad that went to the finals. Tayshaun prince would have helped, andre miller, nazr mohammed, really anyone who has been around the NBA a while, they don’t even need to really play, just having them in the locker room would help.

circumlocution75Participanton the floor…. & in the NBA that matters…… They say a series don’t start until a road team wins a game….. well this series just started…….
I felt like this was a tough match up for the Raptors…… but’s it’s only game 1…… Toronto has a really good team….. If they come out & get game 2…… that will settle them down…… don’t panic yet Raptor fans….. the Lower seed is always at a Major disadvantage in the NBA b/c game 7’s are almost Always a lock for home teams…… This ain’t Hockey…….. but they can’t lose game 2……

BiggysmallsParticipantI don’t think if this was a re-coming out party for George but wow was he spectacular. He dominated that game and showed just how big a difference there is between stars. DeRozan is a really good player and an All-Star, but PG is on another level. At least he was today.
Lowry looked like crap all day. Not even just the missed shots, but he just looked sloppy. George Hill is a good defender but man Lowry looked bad.
I actually thought Toronto’s bench was pretty good. I love Joseph as an energy guy, Carrol is okay, still working his way back and Ross gives them some shot making at times too. Biyombo is a worker as well.
They need their three best players to play better. Valanciunas was a beast on the boards, but he shot 4/14 from the field. Dude missed a lot of layups. DeRozan probably isn’t getting anything in the halfcourt so they’ve got to try to get out and run ahead of that Indiana defense.

dmo21ParticipantI think a reason why Toronto (especially DeRozan and Lowry) as well as Houston (especially Harden) don’t do well in the playoffs is the difference in how the game is called. In the regular season, these teams/players make a living by getting to the free throw line. In the regular season the whistle is looser, but once the playoffs start the refs let a lot more contact go and just let them play. DeRozan only shot 6 free throws today and Harden shot 0. I don’t like how the game is changed from the regular season to the playoffs. Should be officiated the same all the time.
P.S. When JV is man handling the Pacer bigs, how about give him a couple post-up touches? All his shots/misses came from offensive rebounds and little tips (make his shooting % look way worse than it should be) while battling 2-3 Pacers. A guy that big and talented shouldn’t have to work that hard to get his touches.

but it’s only game 1 – a long way to go!

ExumInfernoParticipantMaybe someone told the Raptors that Paul Pierce plays for the Pacers, and they just accepted they would lose once again.
Pacers do have the best player in the series. Their coach is better. Obviously their GM is better. Pacers have more playoff experience, some have been to conference finals and their starting center has been on a champion team.

raybeasParticipantShe kept going on about how Stuckey said that the Pacers match up well with the Raps, trying to make it some kind of guarantee-type statement, or something. There are a lot of teams the Pacers match up well with, including Cleveland.
I’m not saying the Pacers match up well with the top of the Western Conference teams, but they are a match for any team in the East.

chrispaulwallParticipantcan’t say im surprised at all, i dont really like the makeup of this team. they have a lot of good players but, I dont know. maybe its the coaching or the fact that I dont think Derozan is really an elite player, coupled with the fact that Lowry always seems to shit the bed at this time of year. I still think they’ll win this series but theres no way they advance past the Heat or Hawks. IMO

BiggysmallsParticipantFTs weren’t a huge problem for Toronto. DeRozan shot 6, he usually shoots like 8, so that wasn’t his problem. It was the fact that he couldn’t get any space against PG, and they never got anything in transition because the game slows down.
Lowry was awful. Missed a bunch of FTs, settled a lot, sloppy with the ball a lot. I like George Hill, he’s a good defender. He ain’t that good of a defender though. Lowry needs to step it up big time.
Valanciunas too, for as good as he was on the glass, kid needs to finish. 4-14 isn’t cutting it unless he’s shooting 14 free throws and cashing 10 of em.
I really liked Toronto’s bench though. I love Joseph, and I like Carroll, Ross and Biyombo too. They’ve got a good rotation, today was just the perfect reference for the "stars win in the playoffs" crowd becasue PG was a force and DeRozan/Lowry were horrid.

TheWhiteLionParticipantThis is crazy tho. The team sucked last night and plus they werent getting any calls. It was this close of a game with jonas in foul trouble the whole game AND the team sucked last night. Its crazy it was only a ten point game! If the raptors play like they can play then they will blow out the pacers in each of the next four games!

OhCanada-ParticipantThe bench has really been dominating. Lowry and Derozan are still struggling but to take those two off their games it has opened up a lot of opportunities for guys like Joseph and Patterson. Very impressed with Valanciunas interior defence as well.
Toronto is still having the same problems though and this won’t cut it against better teams. Indiana just isn’t that good of a team and they have been disfunctional. Hill isn’t really a pointgaurd. He guards the position well but struggles creating offence in the halfcourt. Most of the offense is run through Ellis and George and when they aren’t hitting contested shots which they can be lured into Indiana’s offense runs bone dry. They also don’t have much depth from the bench and are getting severely outplayed by Toronto’s bench.
Overall I am glad they won and are up in the series but I don’t want to get carried away and still expect them to improve. They are just too good not to make some noise this year and I want to see them compete for the conference championship at least then I will be satisfied with the season.

Hype MachineThis first round has been one elongated yawnfest from my living-room couch.
I watched the Raptors vs Pacers game and I came away thinking both teams are just making up the numbers. If the Raptors are a 2-seed, I laugh at suggestions that the East has gotten stronger because they’re worse than any 2-seed I can remember. The Hawks and Pacers in previous years would have swept this Toronto team.
Where’s the close games? Where’s the big shots? The first round should rival the opening week of March Madness for wall to wall action. I can’t tell you a single ‘big-play’ off the top of my head.
There’s no energy. There’s no intensity. Teams aren’t peaking.
The only series with any intensity is Detroit vs Cleveland, who despite the difference in talent are at least playing ‘playoff style’ basketball.
Hate to be a downer..I hope things pick up. I’m just calling it like I see it.
