BleedGreen808Participanthttp://www.draftexpress.com/article/Thon-Maker-Exclusive-Post-NBA-Draft-Decision-Interview-5417
After making his decision to attempt to enter the NBA draft Maker had a Q&A with Draftexpress. It sounds like he’s going all in hiring an agent which will take college out of the equation if the NBA doesn’t let him in the draft. He sounds ready to put all his focus into improving his game to be successful in the NBA. The news of him entering the draft definitely added more intrigue to an overall weak draft class.

NickWayne87ParticipantWho cares if the NBA doesnt let him in he’s a first round pick even if he plays NOWHERE next year.

OhCanada-ParticipantYesterday HypeMachine wrote that DX has a vendetta against Thon do to Woj’s influence on Givony. This interview has been choreographed perfectly to assist Thon Makers attempt on entering the draft. It shows his attentions are of a professionals and well thought out and displays the prepared process a professional would take.
Also seems staged especially when he states his guardian did not tell him in advance he would be declaring for the draft etc. I hope he gets let into the draft. I also think he would be a definite possibility for the Raptors at 9-12th pick along with a bunch of other guys. His workouts with some combination of Ellenson, Labissiere, Chriss, Davis, Stone, Johnson, Rabb, Thomas, Sabonis, and Poetl would be extremely fun to monitor.

Hype MachineClassic Woj dog move as I anticipated. Check the timeline of events. I was on the money the whole time.
In order:
1) Maker drops exclusive with bleacher report
2) Espn starts a bitter offensive on his guardian
3) Woj gets annoyed…cant get a comment from Maker
3) Goes on the offensive, starts making ridiculous claims about Makers falling draft stock. Sabotaging him.
4) Maker has no choice but to give an ‘exclusive’ to his buddy Givoni. Classic good cop/bad cop move.
5) Check the tone of Makers words. Hes a professional, yet sounds far from hypped about doing the interview
6) Good cop Givoni starts suddenly praising Makers professionalism and demeanour
Woj used his influencen in the Media and DraftExpress to coax Maker into an interview he didnt want to give.
Now Makers gone from Chopped Liver to Caviar.
Give me a break. Dont be fooled into thinking Maker and Draft Express are buddies now…That tweet by Givoni after thr interview praising Maker smacked of guilt and remorse about how it was obtained. Like when you give your wife flowers after cheating.
Completely hollow gesture.

Hype MachinePeople who believe that Maker is late 1st round talent are mistaken, and being influenced by misinformation presented by Salty US draft outlets.
Maker, along with Simmons are the 2 biggest names in the draft. He might not be the 2nd best player, but hes massive clickbait.
I respect the likes of Scout, Zagsblog and Draftnet for not fuelling the Maker sabotage campagne just because he went with Bleacher Report.
You can be sure I was very public on Twitter calling out Goodman, Woj and Givoni on their B.S. Woj even got his boy Marc Spears in on the act at the time when he was sabotaging Makers stock. Shameful the way theyll treat a young man who simple wants his privacy respected amongst all the hype his profile generates.

BleedGreen808ParticipantYou do realize this site hasn’t been super high on Maker either? He’s currently in the 2017 mock(last updated 4/2/16) going 25th. Obviously they will move him into this draft class soon and I’ll be interested to see where they feel he ranks in this weaker draft.
Here is a portion of the site’s writeup on Maker after the Hoop Summit last year:
"He’s obviously a solid NBA prospect, but the hype around him got out of control for a while. His intensity is well received, but more than one scout made comments to the "not feeling it" effect in terms of the hype surrounding him. Hopefully he will take a year or two in college to get stronger and improve upon his game before attempting a jump to the league."

Hype MachineScout has him at #5 between Fox and Monk, which is a much stronger class. That article you quoted is 12 mths old…hes been nothing short of impressive since then. I follow his progress closely, hes been playing very well.
Hes Polarising…we all know that. But in a drafting community often guilty of groupthink, it only takes 1 GM to love his upside.

BleedGreen808ParticipantI know the article is a year old but my point was how do you determine when people have a motive or not. You say Jeff Goodman, ESPN, Draftexpress, and Woj all have reasons to smear the reputations of players like Simmons and Maker. Yet this site has Maker ranked 25th in the 2017 mock but you aren’t claiming they are biased or have a motive behind it.
To be fair I totally agree that Maker should be a lottery pick in this draft and all it takes is one team willing to take a shot on him.

OhCanada-ParticipantLet’s be honest here Hype Machine is not necessarily a troll but definitely a homer. The good kind of Homer. An educated Homer that will provided analysis when overhyping your Aussie boys talent.
Either way based on potential alone I believe Thon is worthy of lottery consideration and draft screening will decide if that’s validated. From an unbiased opinion I believe his size, skill, mobility, work ethic, drive and will to improve should land him in the 10-20 spot with potential to go higher. I don’t need Aran Smith, Jonathon Givony, Chad Ford, Woj, or David Kahn to tell me that and I’m sure none of those guys can effect a GM’s decision either.

Hype MachineEveryone knows I hype the Aussie guys, and am a major homer.
But I’ve got no beef with someone who says my guys should be ranked lower than I think if its for purely basketball reasons.
If someone thinks Simmons should go #2 cos he cant shoot or has a lazy attitude, thats fine by me.
But I take issue when a non basketball personality uses their influence to control the future of an innocent kid for their own personal agenda.
Ive seen it happen when Givoni just signed with Woj. Almost instantly leaked supposed locker room grudges against Ben Simmons from the Australian National team at the same time he officially sided with Rich Paul and Lebron, who wouldnt grant Woj an exclusive if he was the last journalist on earth. Convenient timing and a dirty betrayal of his source…whom I believe got shafted in the process. Woj hates Lebron, Paul and Simmons…and is costing Simmons millions in shoe money in the process and turning him into a villain. Boohoo you might say….but is it really Woj and Givonis place to pull these kind of stunts out of pure bitterness?
Now I’ve seen him pull some crap with Maker…who doesnt have the same volume of work as Simmons, and is a classy kid who is being screwed over…again out of bitterness and the desire for personal gain.
Perception is everything in draft circles. If you think being high or low on mock drafts doesnt influence teams, youre mistaken.

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantIMO Thon has to be top 5-10 a GM will bite on his upside I know it. Kid is super talented and he has a great motor and leadership qualities.. People gotta understand dude is talented and in this weak draft, if he kills workouts, he will go top 5 . Dude is a young KG

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantAs far as upside I’m going Simmons, Ingram then Maker.. Then everyone else. Those are the new top 3. It’s like when Embiid emerged out of no wher . "Potential, Potential Potential" Dickie V voice.

OlvlOParticipantI went down to Athlete Institute a few weeks ago and got so see Maker play live. While he didn’t blow me out of the water, he is indeed a very intriguing prospect. What really stood out to me was his mobility for a guy his size, him and his brother headed the full court press causing all sorts of issues for the backcourt due to their length and motor. Unfortunately, the game I saw live Maker fouled out in about 15 min of action being held to about 10 points. His game is still pretty raw, offensively he doesn’t play like a big man, instead choosing to catch at the high post and face up, taking a jumper or attempting to blow by his defender. When he did post up, he would just put up a baby hook, which due to his height made it effective, though he obviously will require to continue to put on weight as he was being matched physically down low by a much smaller defender. Defensively, he has got great activity, going for every rebound and loose ball, but also trying to block and steal everything, unfortunately leading to his quick fouls.
Overall I can see him progressing to become a solid pro, though he is still rather raw and may take some time to develop. His shot, while something he lists as a strength, wasn’t as consistent as I would have liked, he clanked a few threes and still has some ways to go to be a consistent shooter. My personal comparison would be a raw porzingis, as he does not have the defensive awareness or offensive polish of a young kg, nor do I see him developing into a low post scorer, more of a stretch 4.
Btw, if anyone wants to watch full game action of Maker, go to OSBA on youtube and they have a few full Athlete Institute games on there, allowing you to get a better glimpse of him outside of straight highlight videos.
