Alright guys… Let’s play a game. Say that your team wins the #1 pick… whether you are in the playoffs or not. You just somehow in someway get the #1 pick. What do you do with it?

For my Jazz… I’d probably trade back for a 3 – 7 pick… The Jazz already have Favors at the PF and I think that drafting Simmons would ruin the team chemistry that the Jazz have since he probably would expect to start and I don’t blame him… he’s one of the best players we’ve seen in a long time. Plus, the #1 pick would bring a pretty big return. I would probably look to get the Nets pick from Boston since it will probably be around 3 – 7 and they really want Simmons.

    So the trade would be:

Utah: Pick 3 – 7 and Kelly Olynyk

    Boston: #1 Pick

With that pick Utah would select Buddy Hield he would give depth behind Gordon Hayward or Rodney Hood since Alec Burks is really injury prone… He’d be a HUGE upgrade over Joe Ingles. And the Jazz could use a shooter with great athleticism in their lineup.

    So, let the games begin!

OKC – Brandon Ingram for sure if we’re drafting, I can’t stand Kyle Singler playing crunch time minutes and we need another scorer. Obviously we’d rather get someone ready to contribute so we can have the best chance to win now though, so I’d definitely look to trade it, maybe see if we can get someone like Boogie

As a Celtics fan you’d be getting ripped off if you traded the #1 pick for a pick from 3-7 and Olynyk.  Boston would need to add more assets to make a trade like that realistic.

If Boston had the #1 pick right now I’m leaning towards Ingram because of his shooting and versatility which we desperately needs.  With Crowder out injured right now the only SF we can rely on is Evan Turner.

yeah olynyk is just your only piece the Jazz could really use besides IT4 But I doubt you guys trade him. I was sure more assets would be involved in the deal… just couldn’t think of anything…

Well currently Boston also holds the Mavs 1st rounder too which would be 12th if the draft were today.  Not sure if you’d want to draft another rookie with your roster being so young already.  But yes I would want to keep IT out of the trade as you assumed.

hmm… i didn’t think of that. yeah we’ll throw the mavs pick in there as well. Then the Jazz can trade that pick for a veteran or something. since they don’t need anything.

Agreed, can’t pass up a talent like him.

It’d be a great problem to have, but Simmons and Julius Randle would seem like an awkward fit together at the foward spots due to some overlapping skills and the lack of consistent jump shooting. Ingram is the more natural "fit" with Julius.

If the Celtics get the #1 pick then I’d want Ingram and if he’s still available with the Mavs’ pick then Skal Labissiere with the second.

That would give us scoring that we need, shooting that fits our system and a big man with shooting range and rim-protecting potential.

I’m not sure I understand.  I would think that no matter what team you pull for, Ben Simmons would be the pick.  Can’t pass up on a talent like that.  At least not in this draft when there is a decent drop off between 1 and 2 plus an even larger drop off between 2 and the rest of the field.

A big drop off from one to two? Have you seen a player named Brandon Ingram play this year?  Just curious.

If any teams get a shot at Ingram or Simmons, I don’t see them trading down unless they were offered a franchise level player to trade down. Even teams like Boston who will be drafting in a falsely high position would not lightly trade up a high pick as adding a player like Simmons or Ingram could push them back into real contention.

With Philly who knows what they might do, if the Lakers say got 1st or 2nd pick and say Philly ended up with 3rd pick after the draft lottery then Philly might try to move up but they would probably need to put Okafor on the block.

Damn Zachattack,,,I know they brainwash you out in Utah but I had some optimism that the next generation of Jazz Fans would somehow know better. I was wrong…

    1) You gotta stop over-rating the team. This is a 0 All-Star team which is fighting for its life just to be an 8th seed in the weakest Western Conference I’ve seen in 20 years. The contenders all have multiple players that are better than the Jazz’s best player. This is the benchmark you need to be a contender. Not Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors. You need All NBA 1st team talent. Everyone knows this (Except the Jazz).

    2) You don’t trade the #1 pick for someone to give you bench depth behind players that could only be described as ‘league average starters’ (The Jazz are a .500 team after all). Joe Ingles does a good job of that as a 10th-12th man and only chews up minimal Salary. If you want to win games….get better starters!

    3) Its time for Jazz & their fans to stop accepting mediocrity as successful. This is why the league doesn’t respect them. They’re actually afraid to win. From the Owner down to the players….none of them have the dog in them. The OP is living proof. They have the chance to get a future HOF’er and they wanna give it up just to lock in another white guy (Olynyk) and some bench help. This is a sure-fire way to stay at .500, but good luck beating the Warriors or Spurs. Even Dante Exum and Joe Ingles are too nice. They’d rather give you a hug than whoop you in a basketball game.

The owner is the problem. He creates a family-friendly atmosphere and a feel-good vibe about the Jazz and their place in the community. They’ll also never get anywhere with him in charge because he’s soft as a pillow, and so are the players on the roster. If you create an environment where being a nice guy is more important than winning…you’ll end up with nice guys who don’t win.

Look at Philly or the Lakers down the bottom, or Cleveland and Spurs at the top…they’re prepared to make unpopular decisions just to get better. And they’ll all win titles before Utah even gets close with their Mary Poppins culture.

Ever heard of growth and development.

The Jazz are the 4th youngest team in the league. There players are simply going to get better… Hayward and Favors will be All Stars next year. They’ll finally have a decent PG… you don’t need first team players to win a championship. You need players that mesh well together and grow together… Players that are all just superstars on one team doesn’t work. e.g. Miami 2009 – 2014 (something like that) e.g. Cleveland NOW… e.g. OKC now… A good example of how you don’t need superstar players to win is the Spurs… They don’t have a single first team player on that team. Yet they’re right up there with Golden State… They have some of the best chemistry a team could want. You never hear of those guys getting into arguments over stupid things. Nobody calls each other out… *cough Lebron *cough… They win as a team and they lose as a team. Ask anybody which team has the brightest future and a lot of people will say the Jazz… along with the T-Wolves. Both of those teams aren’t winning right now, but they both will be soon. We should be seeing some WCF battles between those two pretty soon here. And it’s all because of team growth and development. Good Chemistry. That’s what wins games.

I still don’t think Hayward and Favors will be all stars next year unless the Jazz makes a huge jump like say the Pacers from 2011-2012 and Exum and the rest stays healthy. I got to disagree with you on the 2010-2014 Heat because that team has tons of chemistry despite being stacked with superstars and they have 2 championships to show for it and a 27 game wins streak as well. Another team that I can say that are stacked with talent and have tons of chemistry is that 2008 Celtics team who also has lots of chemistry as well. Now, if you’re Jazz next season could be similar to that Pistons team in the 2000’s where they rely on their chemistry and defense then maybe just maybe Favors and Hayward could be all stars.

It’s going to be hard for me to debate anything about the Jazz with you if you continue to over-rate the talent levels of their current roster.

Using the Spurs as an example? How can you compare Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors to Kawhi Leanord and LaMarcus Aldridge….Not to mention Tim Duncan is a top 10 player of all time, The greatest coach of all time, Parker, Ginobli were better than Hayward ever will be.

Using Good chemistry as a case against the current Cavs (EC Champs), Miami (2xChampionships) because they argued? These teams are so far ahead of Utah…not even 1 step or 2 steps ahead.

Brightest future…Towns & Wiggins vs Hayward & Favors….once again completely different ceilings. 2 guys with all NBA 1st team talent….vs 2 guys who might be lucky to make 1 or 2 All star games their entire career. Speaking of which….

Favors and Hayward both All-Stars next season? Those 2 guys are league average starters….nothing more. Guys like Towns, Aldridge, Grifin, Davis, Leonard, Durant, Green, Simmons/Ingram are the future of All-Star Frontcourt. Not Derrick Favors. Like I said, you’re majorly over rating your players.

See my point about Utah’s basketball community having expectations way below what it takes to be a contender. They’re satisfied with what they’ve got, yet are miles away. I know what you’re saying about development, but developing KAT is different to developing Trey Lyles.

They need 3 players better than anyone they’ve currently got to be taken seriously. Problem is they have no desire to obtain these players because they already have nice guys that don’t argue.

Overall… I know that we aren’t good. OK… I say it every night. Every turnover… Every blown layup… This team is a work in progress. This team isn’t going to go far in the playoffs. You don’t know many Jazz fans but I know a lot of them… and a lot of them say that they aren’t a good team right now. I just don’t think that right now is the right time to just blow things up. If we can get a superstar player, great! But we should just stick with what we got… cuz you can’t throw a bunch of guys on a roster and expect everyone to mesh well together. You have to stick with what works. I just feel like that if we draft Simmons, he could ruin any chemistry that we have. He seems to have the attitude that he’s better than everybody and it will piss a lot of people off, since like you said, the Jazz are a bunch of guys who just love each other and a bunch of softies. I’m in no way denying that. But you’ve gotta stick with the process. Get a high character guy (like Buddy) if given the chance because he’s not a locker room cancer like Simmons has the potential to be.

Somebody’s gotta understand what I’m trying to say… right?

I get it but you simply do not pass on a guy like Simmons just because he can become a locker room cancer. You need at least a STAR to win and Simmons has that kind of potential man. Now, if you think he may become a cancer then sign some vets to keep him in check. That’s the problem in Philly right now, lots of young talent yet no veterans to keep them in check. What I’m saying is that sometimes you have to be risky in order to win and your Jazz doesn’t have that in them that’s why they would stay the way they are right now.

If the Wolves land the 1st pick I would take Simmons. As of lately watching the Wolves I don’t think the team needs another franchise cornerstone player. Wiggins,LaVine and Towns can score plenty  and by next year average 20+. With that being sad the team needs role players and talent to add onto their 2nd unit.

Simmons style fits  on a team with athletic team already in place.  He  can pass, finish, and has a high IQ. I think he would be great as a 3rd-4th option on a team, he’s a great role player.

I like Ingram more as a player but I feel Simmons would flourish in Minni

Post Sloan era the Jazz have struggled, they have drafted players who are statistically successful but the team has never really kicked on back into the play offs. Favours and Gobert are a good frontcourt and Hayward provides good scoring on the wing but if they get a chance to draft Simmons or Ingram then they take them.

ZachAttack has fallen into a situation a lot of us do with teams with high picks, we start looking at the existing roster and go he was a high pick, he has upside, he’s a good scorer, this team looks good on paper so would X draft prospect improve them. We all forget that this might be a 27-55 type team and it is high in the draft for this reason. I’ve done this numerous times too over the years.

Ok, I’ll play, I’m a jazz fan. I draft Simmons. And then I use my new found GM powers to ban zachattack from the building or ever watching a jazz game again, so he has to find a new team to root for.
