 He has the occassional habit of getting very snippy after a big loss.  I am sure the hug and the shot did not sit well with him.  He seemed taken aback when the reporter said Brooks agreed with him.  He had a bad moment in defeat and put his foot in his mouth.  I doubt if he is worryig about it as much as we are.

Just read K’s apology story on ESPN.  I guess in coach K’s world, "reacting incorrectly" is code for "not telling the truth".

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski says he has apologized for the comments he made to Oregon forward Dillon Brooks and “reacted incorrectly” to an inquiry about the exchange following his team’s Sweet 16 loss on Thursday.

Krzyzewski released a statement Saturday that said: “Today, I spoke with Oregon head coach Dana Altman and apologized to him for my remarks to Dillon Brooks following our game. It is not my place to talk to another team’s player and doing so took the focus away from the terrific game that Dillon played.”

Krzyzewski, who initially had denied making the remarks Brooks attributed to him, also said: “In the postgame press conference, I reacted incorrectly to a reporter’s question about my comment to Dillon.”

Brooks hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down late in Oregon’s 82-68 win over the Blue Devils. Brooks, who celebrated after he made the shot, said Krzyzewski told him after the game that he’s “too good of a player to be showing off in the end.” Brooks said he told the coach that he was right.

“I didn’t say that,” Krzyzewski told reporters when asked about the exchange after the game. “You can say whatever you want. Dillon Brooks is a hell of a player. I said, ‘You’re a terrific player.’ And you can take whatever he said and then go with it, all right?”

Audio of the exchange between Brooks and Krzyzewski from the CBS broadcast was posted on multiple websites Friday night, and it confirmed the Ducks player’s account:

“You’re too good of a player to do that,” Krzyzewski said.

“I’m sorry, Coach,” Brooks said.

“You’re too good of a player,” Krzyzewski said.

On Friday, Brooks said he didn’t feel like he did anything wrong, but he expressed remorse for publicizing the details of the exchange.

“Me and Coach K, that conversation should have stayed with us,” Brooks said. “But overall, me and Coach K are both professionals, and I have to move on from this situation and focus on Oklahoma.”

Altman addressed the controversy with reporters earlier Friday as well.

“At the end of the game, there was a difference in the shot clock and the game clock,” Altman said. “I told Dillon to shoot it. So if anybody’s got a problem with it, it should be directed at me.”

Krzyzewski ended his statement by saying he had the “utmost respect” for Oregon’s program.

“I sincerely hope I did not create a distraction for Coach Altman and his team at this critical time of year,” Krzyzewski said. “Certainly, I have the utmost respect for the Oregon program and their tremendous accomplishments.”

Coach K could be approaching that age where maybe his mind isnt as sharp as it used to be. Unfortunately, in my experience with oldies in the workplace, they dont always walk voluntarily and theres no way of reversing the downward slope.

Theres nothing harder than telling an old man that its time to retire from a job theyve done all their life, simply because they dont really know any better.

Hes approaching 70 years old and has had a legendary career. The Program is in good hands, I think its time he considered stepping away.

Interesting point by Hype Machine above, my view is that respect must be earnt not just assumed. Coach K turns 70 next year so it may be a logical point to think about finishing. He has Giles and Tatum incoming next season so will have a decent chance of being a contender yet again. Going out on a success would be a fitting way for him to go but if he was intending to retire then any upcoming recruits may be a bit put out if they had committed to Duke to learn under Coach K.

College seasons aren’t as long as NBA seasons and giving up Team USA after the Olympics reduces Coach K’s workload. No doubt he has a well run program and has his own men as his assistants who are all former Duke players. Jeff Capel has coached at college level and is probably being groomed by Coach K to possibly replace him. Coach K can delegate certain roles so could go on for several more years if he wanted.

Personally I feel Coach K will know when it is time to step down and no doubt his family would advise him so he made the right decision.

 I will continue on the Coach K hate here.  Just because K has 5 national championships and olympic gold medals on his resume and over a thousand wins all time does not give him a free pass on the blatant entitlement and arrogance that he has shown this year.  To originally state that he told Brooks he is too good of a player to be showing off at the end of the game while one of his players, Grayson Allen has continually acted like a complete douche and bonehead game in and game out during the regular season is one of the douchiest things I have ever heard a college basketball coach do.  I believe K not once EVER had a conversation with Grayson Allen about his on court and he wants to scold another player because he just got his ass handed to him by a football school?  Are you friggin kidding me??  This is why people hate Duke.  Not because of the national championships, but Duke continually year and and year out is the most arrogant and entitled program in all of college basketball.  I’m biased obviously, but I believe most of my fellow posters agree with me here.  Whining about not getting a call at the end of the Clemson game when you’ve benefitted from more questionable calls in your career than 10 other hall of fame college coaches combined.  K bitching about not getting a call???  Really??  How does a Duke fan justify this season and anything other than a complete embarrassment.  K is gracious when he wins, but when he loses he’s an obnoxious pompous jerk.  He has been for a while.  Last years team were boy scouts compared to the crap and excuses continually being made about how great K is while one of his star players has acted like a complete jerk all seasonand the so called leader of men did nothing about it.  Sickening and embarrassing season for Blue Devils fans.

(Female athletes seem to handle this kind of thing better than men)……… As a result, we can All relate to not being our best after an especially tough loss…..

My point is that a certain subsect of the internet….. angry, hating trolls & the media outlets that cater to them….. pick & choose the targets of their feigned moral indignation……
