valentineThese 2 heavyweights of the Basketball Media are going head-to-head with new start-up, multi-platform initiatives.
The Vertical vs the Ringer
I believe this battle for territory is why there has been such a high level of sensationalism in recent news reports. Twitter has been going crazy. Draftexpress is now riding the Woj train…and Simmons released his crew of writers today.
Everyone is going to be looking for the scoop that can give them the edge, so expect plenty of scandal.
Who will win…Simmons, or Woj?

jabbar_medvedenkoParticipantI think Simmons is just an opinionated, ultra-biased clown. Or, as Doc Rivers once put it, ‘tell him he’s an idiot’. I don’t think this is a contest between the two really, as Woj is definitely the no. 1 in his job, ‘WojBombs’ really put him at the top. I don’t watch the NBA draft, cause he releases the names of players selected before the Comish even announces them. Plus, he has Shams Charania on his side right now, another guy who breaks a lot of news and is a legitimate Woj successor.

Jr. ROXASParticipantGrantland was such a unique and irreplacable site that made me a Simmons lover. His writing style is brilliant and funny, and he and his crew usually talk about topics not seen a million times on facebook or bleacherreport. Especially one of their writers there, Jonathan Abrams, he talks about the most interesting topics regarding the off-the-court side of NBA players.
I feel it would turn out that Woj would have a more news-based website, like bleacherreport, focusing on daily updates and articles on the progress of the players. Simmons’ site would be more opinionated and entertaining, and would have more creativity to it.
The Ringer I predict would be suited for more hardcore sports fans while Woj’s site could also cater to hardcore fans, but would find a bulk of his readers being casual ones.

machu46ParticipantMaybe I’m misunderstanding the Vertical, but I don’t think these two are really direct competitors. It seems to me that Woj’s thing is more about breaking basketball stories, whereas Bill Simmons’ site is about sports in general, politics, pop culture, etc.

phila9012ParticipantI think bill simmons is more divisive, either you love him or you hate him. I tend to love him and what he did with grantland. He would have hardcore zach lowe articles combined with his opinionated articles and podcasts. I find him entertaining, is he the best writer or does he know the most about sports probably not and he occasionally puts out something bad or boring.
Woj is great for news and just basketball talk. I like that, it is better than anything espn does.
I am glad they both do things their own way. The fans get great quality writing in different ways, so people can enjoy things in their own ways.

Andrew1984ParticipantThe difference is that Woj is a journalist and Simmons is a columnist. Those of us who remember the days of print media will better differentiate the two.
A journalist uncovers information and reports it; his priority is the release of new and important information. A columnist composes opinions based on information that has already been reported; his priority is consumption.
The point is that they aren’t direct competitors.

Hype MachineWoj seems like the kinda guy who gets photos of you flirting with another woman at a bar, and then threatens to show your gf if you don’t leak him information.
