Point guards in the NBA

I have to say, playing point guard in the NBA right now is tough. So many guys are stars/borderline superstars. The depth at this position right now is really impressive.
At other positions (particularly the shooting guard spot) I feel like there really isn’t THAT much talent. Harden, Derozan, Butler, and Klay are really above everyone else in my opinion with people like McCollum, Wade (aging), and Middleton right behind.
Compared to point guard where you have Curry, Westbrook, Lillard, CP3, Lowry, Wall, Kemba, Conley, Thomas, Jackson, Rondo, Knight, Bledsoe, Irving and Rose (when healthy). All of them are studs in my opinion and people like Teague, Dragic, Parker (aging), and Rubio are right behind.
Just a really interesting trend I’ve noticed. Playing point guard in the NBA today is no joke. You better come to work every single night, or you’ll get lit up.

Point Guard is loaded. Prospects that can handle the ball and shoot well who aren’t PG’s are going to be SO valuable moving forward because of this.
Concerning SG’s though.. Middleton is no joke. He’s currently at 18/4/4 shooting 40% from the 3pt line and 87% from the FT stripe. Also 1.5 steals per game to boot. He has great length and I could see him cracking the top 5 SG list sooner rather than later.

There’s no doubt the point guard position is the most stacked in the NBA right now.
It’s also the styl of play…so many teams basically just play pick n roll basketball, which means point guards are put in positions to shoot or assist so often.
That has an affect on shooting guards too. Becaus a lot of them nowadays are basically just stand-still shooters or "3 and D" guys. There just aren’t a lot of 2s that can handle the ball and make plays or guys that are asked to do that.

There’s no doubt the point guard position is the most stacked in the NBA right now.
It’s also the styl of play…so many teams basically just play pick n roll basketball, which means point guards are put in positions to shoot or assist so often.
That has an affect on shooting guards too. Becaus a lot of them nowadays are basically just stand-still shooters or "3 and D" guys. There just aren’t a lot of 2s that can handle the ball and make plays or guys that are asked to do that.

Add in the league’s move towards spacing and ball movement which takes advantage of shooters — I think thus the rise. I feel DeAngelo Russell will be added to the mix very soon. He’s starting to look very good.

Another thing is two point guard lineups playing together like rondo and collison, irving and delladova, the guys in phoenix when healthy, russell and clarkson are both combo guards, same with lillard and mccollum. Lin and walker play about 10 minutes a game with each other, the celtics basically play 3 point guard type players in thomas, bradley and smart, the mavs play a bunch of PGs as well and there are probably others and this isnt even counting guys like lebron, butler, green, durant who handle the ball as well. It is just a different game today with all the shooting and playmakers on the court at the same time.

Something that has become a trend in the NBA recently as well is that SG has become a primarily defensive position. With the Talent there is at the 1 and the 3 you see a lot of guys like Danny Green (just an example) who are essentially just brought in to be compliments to primary ballhandlers and who can guard the opponents best backcourt player, regardless of position. Then teams bring in scorers at the 2 off the bench to provide a spark for their second unit. It kind of started with Ricky Davis on the celtics and we’ve seen it in so many situations nowadays with guys like Manu, Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams, and JR Smith who have made a career out of it.

  I have to disagree the only teams that really have that 2-guard who is the better offensive weapon is the Spurs and Thunder that I can see.
  There is a development in good two-way players who can guard those spots, but they tend to still the best offensive option as well. We know the top guys, but look at Bradley in Boston, known as a defender he is also 2nd in scoring on the team. Same with Afflalo in NY and Washington has recently put Beal back into the starting line-up.
  JR Smith starts in Cleveland, Crawford and Reddick are both offensive players and IMO Clarkson is the superior talent to Lou Williams nowadays.
  There will always be good 6th men scorers off the bench, that is a key role (Terry in the Mavs Championship run is my fave) but I think the 6th man dynamic is changing a bit. You got guys like Whiteside and Al Jefferson coming off the bench who are still capable starters. I look at Jordan Hill in Indiana who is probably the best big scoring option Indiana has but he also comes off the bench, Boston has Olynyk/Zeller, in GSW the main guy is a defensive player in Iguodala.
